Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette based on all problems reported for the 2005 Corvette.

1 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 05/08/2020

Was driving around 25 mph when the service active handling light came on and I almost crashed into a parked car because the brakes applied and steered to the right.

2 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2020

The active handling/ stability control inadvertently engages without warning, whether turned on or off when driving. When it does happen the car displays a service active handling code which in turn places the car in "limp mode".

3 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2020

On-going issue with the Corvette's and gm's active handling. This car has had the previous recall for the same issue. While steering and making a lane change on a city street, the vehicle's active handling kicked in locking up my front brakes. It veered me to the left and in to the other lane. Especially hazardous if you're not expecting it and don't know about it, as this time I was not expecting it to happen. Typically tends to happen at lower speeds around 35 mph while making some steering movement like lane changes.

4 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2020

The service active handling light comes on and the car will immediately lock and release the left front brake. Its spooky because if you're not holding the steering wheel tightly the car will pull sharply to that direction.

5 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2019

Car stopped at stop sign turning right into traffic, steering became shakier and brakes started locking up and traction control service light came on. Top speed was 20mph.

6 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2019

The car is equipped with electric stability control. At speed on the freeway a warning sound occurs and the car swerves and some of the brakes come on and no brake lights are on. It is very dangerous and could cause me to have an accident. Gm issued a tech bulletin 06-02-35-002b. Current investigation #ea09-002. Something has to be done here cause as these cars age the problem will continue to grow.

7 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 05/30/2019

Twice today my 2005 Corvette temporarily locked its front left brake followed by giving me an "service active handleing" message. First time on the freeway after hitting a bump and 2nd going about 40mph. Both times driving straight. After turning car off and on the message was gone. This is a serious issue and the dealers seem to deny any common issue with this although iv seen thousands of posts on the matter from other owners.

8 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2019

Making a u-turn or any extreme position of steering wheel rotation causes abs and service traction control lights to engage and forces a seizure if the brakes, locking them and preventing any kind of movement. The only solution to unlocking brakes through my experience is to shut off and restart the vehicle.

9 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2019

I was driving my vehicle at approximately 68 mph in a straight line on the highway. The road conditions were dry and cold. I was driving straight and did not hit any bumps in the road when suddenly I felt the steering pulling my car about 1/4 turn to the left and about a 1/2 turn to the right and brakes were applied, not by me. I then heard a chiming noise and saw an error code on my dash saying "service active handling system". I gained control of my vehicle and exited the highway. I read on many forums that other c6 owners, especially years '05-'06 have had this issue and that the defect may lie in the steering wheel position sensor connector. My vehicle is equipped with a telescoping steering wheel where this issue seems to arise.

10 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2018

If a sensor faults related to the "active handling system" the front driver side brake locks up. At that time it give a "service active handling" notice. This happens while at any speed in including at highway speed. The brake locks up completely for about one second before releasing. Results in extremely hard pull to the left. Vehicle had previous recall service performed but recall service does not prevent the lock up. Date listed below is the last time as I had the service department disconnect the sensor to turn the system off upon starting the vehicle. This was done to eliminate fault that could result in a potentially fatal accident.

11 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2018

While driving 70+mph on an interstate, "reduced power mode" and "service active handling" warnings illuminated on the dic aong with the check engine light. The vehicle then completely shut off making it extremely dangerous to get safely out of the paths of other vehicles. This has happened to the vehicle about 8 times now in varying circumstances, mostly while in motion. Error codes taken from handheld programmer include: p1516, p2101, p2135.

12 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2017

I received a message on the information screen on the dash, it says service active handling system. Is there a recall for this. . Read more...

13 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2017

The car suddenly veared to the left. It went into the other lane before I could correct it. The stability indicator then illuminated. The service bulletin has already been accomplished for this car.

14 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 02/24/2017

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Corvette. While reversing the vehicle at 5 mph, the service active handling sensor and traction control warning indicators illuminated. It was diagnosed that the body control module failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred two weeks later. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 10v172000 (steering). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 28,757.

15 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2016

Service active handling system message appears intermittingly, vehicle was in motion. Didn't notice any handling issue but I am concerned that the car will behave in an unsafe manor.

16 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2016

While driving through a parking lot at roughly 10mph, my car jammed on the front left, then both front brakes, bringing me to a sudden stop. Active handling was showing in the driver information cluster just like when your car loses traction for any reason. . . I thought this was very odd as it wasn't raining, no sand or fluids were present on the road in front of me, and I was barely touching the gas pedal. I then checked to see if I had run something over or if anything was jammed in the wheels/brakes. . . . Nothing visible. I get back in, reverse just fine, but as soon as I shift back to first and attempt forward motion boom it jams the brakes on again. I then re-clutched, tried again with a little more gas, thinking maybe I do have something stuck under the car. . . . Nope, it still brings me to a stop immediately. At this point, I was freaked out. . . . (needless to say) I held the active handling (traction control) button down until the system was fully disabled, after doing this I was able to drive the car back to work. I then found out about the recall and called the dealer. They told me that this recall for active handling had been completed in 2010. I asked them to please verify this as I had a headlight recall to do anyways and scheduled an appointment. Long story short. . . The service adviser told me that the previous repair had failed and that it needed to be done again. He then tells me that they do not have to fix my car because they already repaired it back in 2010 and that it would be up to me to cover the cost. After trying for over a week to convince them to do the right thing, I gave up and paid them for the repair. Im very worried that this will also not hold up. If this repair failed in the past, who is to say that it wont happen again, and this time it could cause a crash, even death. Please help, someone has to hold these people accountable.

17 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2015

I was driving on the freeway and active handling come on and the car swerve to the left almost causing a accident.

18 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 11/19/2015

I purchased my car used with 29000 miles on it in July 2015. Gm dealer stated that all recalls were incorporated. After having my vehicle serviced months later, the message : service active handling system appears on my display after readjusting my steering column. Car was not in motion. I turned off the ignition and restarted the car. The message has not reappeared since, however the steering column has not been readjusted since either. Is this possibly a faulty incorporation of the NHTSA recall notice 10v172000? I currently have 31450 miles on the odometer.

19 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2015

I was nearly involved in 2 accidents in the past week and I no longer feel safe driving my car. I have a 2005 chevy Corvette which has very low mileage on it (~42,000) for how old it is. The problem I am experiencing exactly matches a recall listed for 2005 chevy Corvettes however because my VIN number does not list that recall chevy refuses to honor it. . Read more...

20 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2015

First occurrance was a month or two ago. We were exiting a parking lotat about 5mph when the car's active handling locked the right side brakes to where I could not keep the car straight. I could not accelerate without a heavy throttle to overcome the brakes. Service active handling icon lit. I had to shut the car down for a minute then restart to clear the brakes. This has happened several times since, almost identically. The car was checked by the dealer but there were no stored codes for them to follow up on. Apparently the "mechanics" cannot physically inspect cars anymore. Recently and after the dealer serviced the car, it has happened several more times with my wife driving. It is back at the dealer as we speak. We are both beginning to be worried about our safety and that of other motorists.

21 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2015

This incident happened 4 or more times. However, this last time, I was traveling at 75 miles per hour on the i95. The traction control system light came on and then the car engine died on me as has happened on a number of other occasions. I was in the left lane on the highway. Lucky for me there were no vehicles behind or to the right of me so I was able to coast to a dead stop on the safe side of the road shoulder (right). The car normally would start again after this system failure. This time it did not and I had to have it towed to the nearest garage which was a Ford dealership. This could have been very serious had it not been for light traffic. I have had the vehicle service a number of times at gm dealerships for the engine light being on. The issue is still unresolved. I no longer have confidence in the vehicle as to its drivability and safety.

22 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 03/28/2015

I purchased my 2005 Corvette c6 convertible used last year. The service active handling light and message comes up often when I drive the car. The code goes away if I turn the car on and off. If I hit a bump in the road the service active handling comes on again. I have not noticed any handling issues. I read the Corvette forum and a thread sent me to this site. Is there a recall that gm should have fixed on my Corvette? if yes, will the recall hold up considering the age of the vehicle? please advise how I should proceed. Thanks, bob morasko 6011 archery circle salida, CO 81201 307-670-0510 cell.

23 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2015

2005 c6 service active handling failures repeatedly. Multiple previous activation of active handling but always at low parking lot speeds never created a real safety issue until today it activated driving 45 mph in a straight line, front right brake was activated causing a hard pull to the right and nearly put me up onto a busy pedestrian sidewalk. Fortunately, no one was walking at the time. Dealer serviced car 3 times and unable to correct. Car unsafe to drive until corrected. Please advise of options and corrections.

24 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2015

Just as leaving dealership for low beam recall, 2 miles, used cruise to 35 mph, 10 clicks of button to 45, then again to 55. When car reached 55, I felt the car nose forward like I cut cruise w/ tap of brake. I did not. Warning light/ cruise disengaged, still looking at dic car nosed down and squatted with warning light reduced power, this caused the car to slow to 35 and feel as though I was pumping the gas and brake alternately like when we were kids and used to watch the wife's head go back and forth. Before getting off road more lights and warnings. Its hard to say which came first, it all was happening fast and as a surprise. I know service active handling, traction control and abs messages came on. Don't think they took priority over the reduced engine power though. I remember seeing it, all the way back to the dealer. Slowed and pulled into huge lot. Now it was my head doing the back and forth dance with the car @ idle, it sounded like the main bearings weren't getting any oil and wanted out of that engine at any cost. So upset with the bearing noise, I got back on the road (picking up rpms) headed back to dealer in a limp mode (35 mph) even when the posted speed went down to 25 mph, the car did not lower rps as I pressed harder on the brakes. There is more to complain about but that will remain between the service manager, gm, and myself to resolution. Stayed at dealership approx. 10 minutes. Car started fine and I left. I always drive the same, and when the car reached 55 mph at the exact same place, it all happened again the exact same way! had to bring the car home in limp mode, about 10 miles from home. Again @ 35 mph. Car remains parked, put away, and covered, until the dealership contacts me to return with it, by Tuesday of this coming week, so sayeth the gm rep. If not he wants me to call him back.

25 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2014

My car starts starts beeping rapidly, my heads up display says to check gauges, my driver information center says "service active handling system". This has happened approximately 6 times since the first time in November. I just started hearing stories about this in the online forums, and that there have been systems that have caused accidents. Is it safe to drive this car? I have scheduled an appointment with my local dealer for this and another recall notice about my low beam headlights failing.

26 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 10/31/2014

A strong fume odor enter my house as if something was burning, my Corvette was in my garage it hasnt been used in more than 3days. . . . . I noticed it was coming from the bottom of the car, and in effect it was! contacted my mechanic and he advised me that it was the abs system caught on fire damaging the conector, module and regulator. He found a leak of brake fluid thru the modulator that cause the modules cables burned the connector. Had to change all the abs system since Chevrolet modified the previous abs system cause it was defective. However no recall has been made to this system. An aprox $3500. In repairs for a system that they know is defective. We were lucky nothing else in our garage/house got damage it was an scary situation.

27 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 10/16/2014

Traction system error on dic, shut off traction control and reset it to on. Error went away. I have had the steering wheel position switch changed and problem still exists. Defect investigations summary make: Chevrolet model: Corvette year: 2005-2008 NHTSA action number: pe08056 summary: on September 17, 2008, odi opened preliminary evaluation pe08-056 to investigate allegations of inappropriate activation of the electronic stability control (esc) system in model year (my) 2005 and 2006 Chevrolet Corvette vehicles. Some reports received by odi and some reports to general motors (gm) contained in gm's response to pe08-056 allege that the esc system malfunctioned causing a sudden and inappropriate braking action without illumination of the brake lights and causing the vehicle to swerve left or right unexpectedly. Gm issued a technical service bulletin in January 2006, later revised in October 2007 (bulletin no. 06-02-35-002b) concerning esc problems in my 2005 and 2006 Chevrolet Corvette vehicles with the telescoping steering wheel option. The bulletin was intended to correct a fretting corrosion problem with the steering wheel position sensor connector c202. An engineering analysis has been opened (ea09-002) to continue to asses the scope, frequency, and safety-related consequences of the alleged defect.

28 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2014

Taking a freeway exit ramp, turning right, warning light came on displaying "service active handling system.

29 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2014

Turned the steering wheel completely. "service stability control" message appeared. Brakes applied automatically and pulled hard to the right. I could not steer. Turned car off the middle of the street. Car was "normal" until the steering wheel get turned completely. Scared it will happen at highway speeds.

30 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 06/28/2014

I was making a right turn into my neighborhood at approx. 20 mph when right front brake locked up and vehicle swerved to the right. Vehicle would lock up every time I tried to go therefore I had to cut ignition off and restart. This has occurred now three times and each time the brakes locked up and vehicle swerved to the right each time and would not go! I was traveling at a low rate of speed on each occurrence and was making a right turn on each occurrence. We took the car to youman's chevolet in macon ,GA after the first incident and the charges to investigate the problem were going to be so outlandish that we did not pursue. They did not even consider checking to see if there could be a recall on this problem or any other problems we have gone to them with during the last seven years. At that point, we went to a car repair place that we use frequently on all of our vehicles and have a good relationship with. They ran a diagnostic test on the car to check for an error code on the computer but nothing showed up. The technician said that it has not done this enough times to register the problem yet. Since that time, we generally drive with the traction system off when driving in town as it is somewhat scary when the situation occurs. This has not happened to date when the traction system is off and has also not happened when traveling at a higher rate of speed.

31 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2014

Was driving at highway speed and active handling message showed up in the dic on the instrument panel seconds later the antilock brakes seemed to lock on one side only and tried to pull steering wheel out of my hands I was able to get the vehicle off the road and after cycling the ignition switch the notice went away and the vehicle operated normally again.

32 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2014

While making a slow speed right turn, the right front brake grabbed and the "service active handling" warning was displayed on the dash. Turning off the engine and re-starting cleared the message.

33 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2014

While making a left hand turn from a stopped position the right front brakes started to pulse and grab not allowing me to accelerate more than a crawl. Warning light on dash traction control / active handling illuminates. I was able to limp out of the intersection and come to a stop in a parking lot. With the steering wheel and wheels straight, I again tried to accelerate but the brakes still grabbed. I put the car in park and tried turning off the traction control and active handling by pressing the button on the center arm rest area. Still showing the same message and still not driving correctly. I then shut off the car and restarted. Back to normal driving. Two days later while turning left again, but this time while going 10 mph, I felt the brakes again start to pulse and grab but it corrected itself without me having to restart the car. I do have power telescoping wheel that does retract every time I exit the car. I brought it in to van chevy today but they found no codes and did say the clip that was installed as part of a recall was still in place. Other than replacing the steering wheel position sensor they do not know what to do or what is wrong. I have had many gm cars before but this issue really scares me.

34 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2014

Several times while I am driving the front tires will lock up, making my car turn sharply either to the left or the right, or when I am making turns, this brings me to a complete stop. The computer tells me to service the active handling system, well I looked into it and gm had a recall on this, the service bulletin number is TSB-06-02-35-002b. I contacted gm and they said that the recall on my vehicle was accomplished, well, (if it was) it is not working as it was intended to work. I cannot drive this vehicle because it is unsafe !!! do you think gm has said this was completed, but wasn't!! I do not want to tamper with my car, because if it was not corrected I would need proof, is there somewhere I can go to see if this sb was in fact completed? gm said to take it to a dealer, I called the dealer, but they we not aware of any problems like this, so I sure don't want to go back to them, just to have them charge $ me for something that they said that they have accomplished already, or if it was accomplished it did not correct the problem. Can you help, because I can not put the vehicle on the road, and take the chance of hurting someone!!.

35 Electronic Stability Control problem

Failure Date: 03/28/2014

I experienced symptoms similar to the service active handling recall. It was raining, and a "service active handling" message appeared on my driver information center (dic) display. The active handling trouble light illuminated on the dash. The car started missing and was running rough, like it wanted to stall. Then the service engine soon light illuminated and a "reduced engine power" message appeared on the dic. Both messages flashed alternatingly and continued to do so until I pulled to the side of the road and stopped. I shut the car off and restarted it; the messages did not clear, the service engine soon light was still illuminated, and the car was still running rough. I was able to limp the car home (15 miles) safely. Once I pulled into my garage, I shut the car off and then restarted it. The engine idled smoothly then. The brakes did not activate as is common with other Corvettes covered under the recall. My VIN is also not one that is covered under the recall, but I seem to have many of the same symptoms, and my car is equipped with the tilt and telescoping steering column. I called gm and was told my car is not covered by the recall. How do I know that when I can find no publication of the vins included anywhere? your investigation number: ea09-002 gm recall number: 10118 Apr 10.
