The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox LS. The contact stated that while trying to access the rear lift gate, the locking mechanism malfunctioned making it impossible to open the liftgate from the interior or exterior of the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified. The vehicle was not repaired (or the vehicle had not been repaired). The failure mileage was 85,000 and the current mileage was 88,000. The VIN was not available.
The liftgate support rod detached while in the up position allowing the liftgate to fall freely on my head and neck. If I was in another position or if I didn't react quickly I might have been seriously injured or killed. It seems the liftgate supports are not strong enough or attached properly. The other support rod didn't have enough strength to hold the door up.
