10 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2014

This has happened a few times with this vehicle, usually at speeds in excess of 50 mph. When being cut off by another vehicle, hitting the brake hard and steering away from the offending vehicle cause the Hhr to fishtail and get very squirrely. It just starts going back and forth in a rocking motion and only settles down by taking my foot off the brake. It feels like the car could easily go into a roll over. I have had it inspected by les schwab and they replaced the struts and shocks, but saw no real problems. This latest incident occurred many months after that work was completed, so that apparently was not part of the problem. It will also occasionally give me a shimmy in the steering wheel when decelerating from a moderate speed. However, that does not occur most of the time. . . Rotors appear to be fine.

11 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2014

Fuel leak in front of drivers side rear wheel. This is completely unacceptable in an 8 year old vehicle. The fuel line corroded and leaked heavily, cost me $254. 22 to replace this faulty gas line. I am obviously not the only person this has happened to. I have also had all the other typical problems such as the key will not release from ignition, bad rotors, loose front end bushings and excessive front end vibration over typical street cracks. Broken drivers side interior door handle, cracked windshield. . . . . .

12 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2013

Engine shut off first time resulting in minor contact with garage door while pulling into driveway. Shut down 2 more times at low speeds and a 4th time at 50mph in a cement barriered construction zone on a bridge, no road shoulder, due to speed at shut down was able to coast through construction to roadside. Ignition control module was replaced after incident, however shutdowns continued after. Drove car with single key only since ignition control module was replaced, however my vehicle stills shuts down! it has been included in the recall but it still is not safe and I don't believe will be safe after recall repair! I don't want to wait until I kill someone to have the gov, gm, or anyone care, that the cars that are actually shutting down need to be taken off the road and replaced! please someone help the car owners like me! help us feel safe again and not as though we are playing russian roulette every time we drive our cars! I am begging someone at this agency to please make them replace our known defective and unsafe cars! my car continues to shutdown after removal of all things on the key! help! I have 2 small kids and have to keep them safe!.

13 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2013

After abiding by the recall to change the ignition switch, the car starts freaking out randomly. The dash lights start going on and off. Loose power steering, power brakes and the car just stops. You can be going 70 miles an hour down the highway and the car just gives out. The dealership refuses to fix it unless I am willing to pay all the fees. I had a second dealership replace some fuses but after 2 days it started doing it again. After the first episodes, I called and opened a ticket with Chevrolet, but because the dealership I used didn't want to mess with the car any more they were not very helpful. Now I am driving a death trap because I can't afford a new car and I won't let my children drive or be in the car.

17 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2011

On my way to work I slowed down to change lanes to make a right hand turn to a parking lot. All of a sudden there was a major jolt and my foot was knocked off the gas pedal. The last thing I remember was looking down at my right foot and seeing it under the brake pedal and thinking I need to move my foot. I remember the emergency room for a moment when I asked them not to cut my clothes. My next memory is for a moment in icu and then I woke up in a hospital room a week later. According to the police report, the car crossed the two westbound lanes and hit a sign and fence, jumped the curb, and then hit shrubbery and several headstones at a memorial sales business. Police estimated my speed at 50 mph? I think the airbag deployed while I was driving. Possibly the ignition shut down causing the jolt and deployment. The car was totaled and I was disabled in this accident. I am unable to return to work. According to gm I am not eligible for a settlement because my airbag deployed. What difference does that make if the ignition caused the accident?.

The failure persisted and the vehicle was taken to a second dealer where the front hub bearing assembly was replaced. The failure seemed to have been repaired however, the warning lights would continue to illuminate intermittently. The vehicle was not further repaired. The failure mileage was 75,084 and the current mileage was 80,000.

19 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

I own a 2006 chevy Hhr lt2, it has approx. 52k miles, and a rattle, vibration in the steering column has been occurring at speeds below 45mph. Also, the driver side floor is continuing to flood with water, and the heater/ac blower has failed or shorted out. Lastly, I have had the brake rotors worked on 4 times by chevy, and they are now once again in need of repair. I recently took my vehicle back to the dealer for the rattle in the steering and the water leak. I found numerous TSB articles for the issues, but the dealer and gm are claiming the tsbs do not exist. The repairs will total more than $1100. I was told the bushings, and tension rods are the problem with my steering, and they would need to be replaced. At 52k miles I find it hard to believe these items would fail. . My major concern is my safety related to the steering as well as any possible electrical issue stemming from the water leak. . I do not understand why gm has not issued a recall for the steering issue as well as for the brake rotors. If you go to any vehicle complaint web site for the Hhr you will see 100's of postings related to bad brakes. There are also similar complaints pertaining to the steering. The dealership refused to honor or compromise with regards to performing the repairs for free or for a reduced fee. I contacted gm corporate and filed a complaint. I was told the gm district manager would contact me. I am still waiting.

20 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2009

My 2006 Hhr vibrates violently when the brakes are applied. I've had this problem checked numerous times from approximately 12000 miles on. I am currently at 55000. After inspections I was advised nothing was wrong with my brakes. I was told the materials used for the brakes heats so rapidly that it could cause it. I questioned about the materials used and it was explained to me that it was to keep the weight low on the vehicle for gas mileage. Yesterday I was returning home from work which I have to travel a long grade. I shifted to a lower gear to reduce speed going down the grade, I pressed on the breaks and the vehicle shook so violently I ended up trying to use the emergency hand break in order to gain control of the vehicle. My speed was approximately 52 miles per hour. I have had numerous problems with this vehicle and have an extensive warranty repair record on it including a fire. I find this vehicle is extremely unsafe especially with the braking problems.

Bought chevy Hhr w/ @23,000 miles at @32,000 experienced severe front end shaking while braking. Dealer acknowledge issue as warranty repair and surfaced rotors. Car exhibited same issue at @45,000 miles. It is obvious by reviewing these few sources (there many more) that chevy is denying the use of inferior rotors. . Read more...

24 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2008

I bought my Hhr exactly one year ago. This is my first car so I have no general knowledge about vehicles. I bought the vehicle used with 31,000 miles on it. It currently has 58,000 miles on it so I am not covered for a warranty. At first I noticed a vibrating when exiting a highway or decelerating with my brakes. The steering shook violently. Also when driving the steering wheel is hard to control and the car seems to veer severely to the right and with sheer force I have to use both hands to control it. Recently that has increased dramatically, even at speeds of 30mph. I took the car to get the brakes inspected and they told me the brakes needed to be replaced and the rotors were warped and needed to be replaced, not resurfaced which others have said that is unusual since the vehicle is still fairly new. The mechanic also told me that my front struts are leaking and need to be replaced. I have also noticed that when I am driving the car tends to shake/vibrate and make strange noises. The key gets stuck in the ignition upon turning the engine off. There are times I have had to restart my car up to 8 times just to get the key out of the ignition.
