36 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2019

I took my Hhr in on 10/04/2019 for basic work, and was informed on the leak in my fuel line. I didn't have it fixed at that time due to high price. I saw the new report from the detroit free press on 7/7/2020 about the NHTSA investigating complaints of fuel leaks in older Chevrolet Hhr. I believe my Hhr falls under this. I was quoted roughly $800-$1000 to have the line replaced. I feel this is something chevy should recall and pay to have fixed as a leaking fuel line is very dangerous.

37 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2019

When I turned off my car recently, I could smell gasoline. I could also smell it when the air conditioning was on. I took my Hhr to sweenybuick/GMC, and they pointed out that two fuel lines were rusted through and I was driving my car under dangerous circumstances. . . Some of the gasoline was leaking close to the muffler. My service agent said a fire could have easily started. The mechanic replaced my fuel lines, and then told me that he has had to replace fuel lines in other chevy Hhr's and chevy colbalts. At no time has gm ever notified me that my fuel lines can rust through, and that other cars have had the same issue: Hhr or cobalt. However, this dangerous rusting has occurred in others. I went online and found out that others have experienced rusted fuel lines, and some have attempted to replace the lines themselves. A recall should have been issued. Hopefully no one will die in a tragic fire caused by gas leaks. I could smell the gasoline both when driving (especially with the air conditioning on, and when using the key to turn the car off. However, when looking underneath the car, I did not detect gas leaking from underneath, and I believe this was a slow leak, because my gas gauge did not show a dramatic loss of gas. When I called Chevrolet customer support they reported it was a known issue but no recall had been issued.

38 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2019

I put my 2008 Hhr in the shop for a brake issue and mentioned to my mechanic that I smelled a faint smell of gasoline to check it out. He called later and told me the brakes were a minor issue but the gas smell was the major issue. The gas line was rusted out in more than one place and I was leaking gas all this time. My story about the gas line is almost word for word the same as a prior complaint on this site. This is a highly dangerous issue and apparently not an isolated one. $ 1000. 00 in repair but my safety as well as my family's is at stake. My mechanic recommended that I not get into this car until this repair was made. Imagine my surprise when I read someone else had the exact same problem on the same type car.

39 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2019

My 2008 Hhr panel LS has a fuel leak and it is located on the driver side just in front of the rear left car. After investigation I believe it is rusted. I understand chevy put a sleeve around the fuel line for whatever reason and living up north it has trapped water and rusted. The fuel line is near the exhaust and I fear it might ignite or possibly trap myself or a drive in a flaming vehicle. Can you tell me if this problem is ongoing and has been recalled.

40 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2019

The fuel line on my vehicle developed a leak at the left rear tire. I had to buy and install an aftermarket fuel line kit. I found that the metal fuel line has rusted through. When removing the old fuel line the purge line broke open at a rusty area. These two lines and a brake line run through a tubular knitted heat shield in this area. The heat shield had collected dirt and salt and was damp on a dry day when I was working on the line replacement. Poor design.

41 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2019

Fuel lines rusted and leaking. Leak located on drivers side just before rear tire. Upon examination it appears that the two fuel lines are wrapped with insulation of some sort due to the lines proximity to the exhaust. This insulation has been trapping moisture for years causing the oxidation of non stainless steel fuel lines. This dangerous condition was noticed while the vehicle was stopped. I have taken the vehicle to a mechanic and have been told that the lines must be replaced which will cost approx 650 dollars. The mechanic informed me that he is familiar with this common safety hazard attached to this model. I also have now read other complaints regarding this dangerous problem. I strongly suggest that the NHTSA use its considerable influence with the manufacturer of this vehicle to enact a safety recall for this hazard on this model and all vehicles that may have this defect. This safety violation has been reported to your organization, to Chevrolet dealerships and to general motors' Chevrolet division for years and those notifications have all been ignored. Will it take multiple horrendous tragedies before somebody does the right thing. Does an american car company need another Ford pinto-like (aka "pintorch") negative publicity campaign on its hands?I I cannot fathom why a company that issued a recall for a plastic latch for a dashboard door and has scoffed at folks for notifying them of this very preventable safety hazard.

42 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2019

The fuel line on my car was leaking near the left rear tire. A service garage repaired the rusted out metal line with a 2 foot length of rubber hose.

43 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2018

Takata recall. My 2008 Hhr is leaking gas from the fuel line by my rear drivers side tire. The leak starts when I start my car and ends within 30 minutes of the car engine being turned off.

44 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/29/2018

I was told by a neighbor that fuel was leaking from the rear bottom of the car. I came home and looked under the car and saw that fuel was leaking from the gas line next to the muffler. The vehicle is now parked in the driveway.

45 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/16/2018

The fuel line was rusted through due to years of the wrapping around the fuel line getting wet and not being waterproof material. It's costing 900 to have fixed. I'm sick and tired of all the issues with this vehicle. I have under 100,000 miles on my vehicle and get routine maintenance done on time. I know cars don't last forever but this seems like a common issue with Hhr models and should be recalled.

46 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2018

2008 Hhr chevy LS 4d. Within 10 months of purchasing this car (October, 2017) the smell of gasoline became so strong I took it to the local mechanic. The fuel line had completely rusted out. I was told it could have caught fire! cost of replacement was $420. 00. A huge financial burden for a senior citizen. I have original bill for this amount and receipt of payment.

47 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2018

Fuel line is unsafe and fire hazard. Noticed a leak around rear door. The line is made of cheap steel, not something like stainless steel and next to the exhaust pipe. Could cause both a fire and explosion. This is a recall repair for gm.

48 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2018

I noticed a strong odor of gasoline and took the Hhr to my local mechanic. He diagnosed it as a rusted fuel line caused by the proximity of a heat shield that traps water. . He was able to repir it by splicing in a section of the line. A bout a yer later the line was leaking again and this time there is not enough line left to splice that isn;t rusted. Obviously this is a danger ranging from leaking gasoline hitting a hot exhaust to a passerby discarding a lit cigarette near the leak and blowing themselves and my car to kingdome come. A check engine light comes on periodically, but is only partially indicative of the gas leak as a possibility. This is a safety issue for both the owner and anyone who might happen by with a lit object.

49 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 02/23/2018

Strong smell and puddling when parked indicating fuel line leakage at rear driver side tire area (just in front of the rear tire). Upon replacement the fuel line was discovered to be corroded.

50 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2018

This is a very well taken care of vehicle. The design and placement of the fuel lines are near the exhaust and wrapped in heat protection which causes condensation and the building up of moisture to rust out the fuel lines. They begin to leak right next to the exhaust which is a fire hazard that Chevrolet should take care of before someone gets hurt.

51 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2017

Rusted fuel line leak in front of rear drivers side tire appeared to have rusted from the fire protection the lines were wrapped in to protect lines from the heat of the exhaust pipe from factory. Strong gas smell coming from rear of vehicle and interior. Vehicle was driven for a week until noticed smell and complications on cold starting vehicle. This is very dangerous and it is very unsafe if the lines were stainless steel from the factory we would not have to try and jump through hoops for a vehicle that is unsafe it should be mandated that fuel lines brake lines etc should all be made of stainless to resist road salts and rust.

52 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2017

Gasoline leaking from drivers rear tire area. Caused by rusted fuel lines. The fuel lines are located next to the muffler. Very dangerous situation. I took it to Chevrolet dealership and was told over $1000 to repair this fuel line. Spoke with the service technician and he said that gm specifically states no warranty on fuel lines in areas of the country that use salt and sand to treat the roadways. I live in massachusetts and we use sand and salt on the roads. Gm is aware of this rusted fuel line problem and will not recall and replace.

53 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2017

Fuel leak on car. Noticed problem starting car and then a small puddle of gas under car after car was parked.

54 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2017

The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Hhr. The contact stated that while driving at 70 mph, the accelerator pedal was applied but it went to the floorboard. Additionally, the contact stated that there was an abnormal odor of fuel outside the vehicle and noticed fuel was leaking from underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 101,000.

55 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2017

On July 31, 2017 I noticed a gas ordor coming from the car , when inspected I notice a gas leak on the back drivers side. Looking forder into the matter the car was jack up to see we're the leak was, the fuel lines were in a terrible shape, rusted out, which then created a crack and fuel was leaking. I believe this should be a safety recall, it is absolutely dangerous big fire hazard . We did get the car repair and the fuel lines were replaced.

56 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 03/31/2017

Started getting a gas smell in the garage when comming back home. Today I noticed that it was dripping gas from under the driver side passenger seat. Fire hazard. This car is only 8 years old, have never had another car that had a fuel line leak. Leaking raw fuel to the ground when running luckily I saw it and will not drive the car till I get it fixed.

57 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 03/22/2017

I noticed strong gas smell while car is running, exhaust making funny sound. Fuel line leaking on drivers side rear, right next to exhaust pipe. This could have been very serious injury if car had exploded or caught fire!.

58 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2017

Starting smelling fuel about 2 months ago and now it's really strong. Looks like the line is rusting out near rear tire. I would think that is very unusual for a vehicle that is only 9 years old. After researching online I am finding a lot of Hhr owners having the same issue. This should be a recall in my opinion and is dangerous I would think.

59 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2016

Fuel lines in front of drivers side rear wheel completely corroded thru. Partially due to heat shroud, rubber covered with foil, installed due to lose proximity to exhaust pipe. Return line started leaking, pressure line broke in half during removal. Chevy disavows all responsibility although the rest of the lines are not rusted. Heat shroud contained road salt, sand and gravel when removed. Corrosion was exfoliate in nature. On line research shows at least one instance of a Hhr catching fire due to this. Problem was discovered after smelling fuel and discovering fuel leaking under vehicle. Author of report has been working on cars for 45 years and has held an a&p certificate for over 40 yrs. Have never seen 8 year old fuel lines in this condition. Black coated brake lines running next to fuel lines were completely unaffected. As previously stated there are many texts online concerning this issue, all received the same lack of concern from gm, including their customer service line.

60 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2016

I started smelling gas inside/outside of vehicle after shutting it off. When starting the vehicle the exhaust sounds rough. I took my vehicle to an independent mechanic and a Chevrolet dealership and found that the gas lines near the rear driver side tire are rusted and have also damaged my exhaust manifold which is also causing the vehicle to sputter when accelerating. Because the problems are due to gm's poor job of designing this unsafe vehicle this issue should not be the vehicle owners responsibility, it should be recalled.

61 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/09/2016

Steering shaft u joint rusted and broke in drive way.

62 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2015

Started smelling gas smell when walking up to vehicle after sitting. . . Including smell within the cabin. Did a little research and found many complaints about rusted gas lines near the rear driver side tire and sure enough when looking there I could now see on the ground where gas was dripping. The lines are partially covered with what seems like a heat shield. . . Yup. . . My guess would be because the hot exhaust pipe runs near it. The heat shield I believe seems to hold moisture against the lines and condensation and I'm guessing it defeats the purpose when the line is now rusted through and is dripping gas near the exhaust pipe. Very poor and dangerous design.

63 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/25/2015

Since2006 fuel lines continue to rot out spraying fuel on exhaust.

64 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2015

The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Hhr. While in park, the vehicle failed to start intermittently. In addition, the contact noticed fuel fumes emitting from the vehicle fuel was leaking from underneath the vehicle. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the fuel lines were corroded and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 83,000.

65 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2015

My chevy Hhr developed a leak in the fuel line - just behind the rear diver's side tire. When looking this up on line, I was shocked at how many others had reported the same complaint. The leak was only visible to me when the car was parked on an incline (spotted 3-25-15). However, it had had trouble starting for about 2 weeks prior - the dealer confirmed this was due to gas leaking out the line. The fuel line and the canister purge line both needed replaced.

66 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2014

I took the car into the shop on 11/15/14 because of a loud exhaust sound. The mechanic advised the flex pipe was leaking and the flex pipe and catalytic converters (2) would need to be replaced. The cost is estimated at about $900. If the car is in idol, the exhaust seeps into the car and could cause carbon monoxide poisoning and death, if the windows are not cracked to allow for ventilation. Unfortunately, we cannot afford this repair at this time. The car is 6 years old and should not be falling apart piece by piece as it has been over the last couple of years. This part should be recalled, or should I say the entire car, b/c it has had so many recalls in the last couple of years.
