The contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Hhr. The contact stated that he noticed there was a fuel leak near the driver's side rear door. The contact stated that the tpms, esc, and check engine warning lights were illuminated. The contact researched the matter on line and determined the failure was related to NHTSA action number: pe20011 (fuel system, other, fuel/propulsion system, fuel system, gasoline). The contact called the local dealer, who informed him there were no recalls. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 136,440.

2 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2023

3 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2022

On February 10, 2022 I was riding in the front passenger seat of this vehicle with the front passenger window partially down. I had my fingers of my right hand partially out of the window holding the top of the door frame. The driver hit the remote switch for auto close of the power window. As I felt intense pain in my right hand I quickly withdrew my hand and noted spurting blood, mutilated pinky finger and intense pain. The driver's view of my hand may have been obstructed by my body. My fingertip was still stuck between the top of the window and door frame. I went directly to the nearest emergency room and was diagnosed with a traumatic amputation of the right hand (dominant) fifth finger with complete loss of the nail. Three hand x-rays show open, partially displaced fracture of the distal phalange. Due to severe mutilation of the fingertip it could not be reattached to the remaining portion of my finger. This vehicle must not have been in compliance with the fmvss no. 118 that required anti-pinch windows in vehicles from 2008 forward. Owner's manual has no statement that it has this safety feature.

4 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2021

My key gets stuck in my ignition and will not pull out happens when I'm in park and it's been a persistent ongoing problem I how to do the key release the button every time to have my keys released the back hatch of my hr is locked and it will not open it from the outside norwood open from the inside this is also been ongoing issue I had my brake line and abs and line and inspect them in your place and my abs traction and tire pressure light remain on even after being serviced I took it to a dealership dealership and the dealership refuse to do the recall on it and want to charge me to have the whole modules replaced but it's my knowledge has a recall going on with the traction and abs I bought the car used about 4 months ago. Before my back hats about of my Hhr locked up for good where I used to lock the door the back latched did not lock you and you will still be able to open the bat match even if the doors are locked so either I'm facing it being locked completely and I can't get into it or on a good day is unlocked for me but will not remain lock when I lock the doors.

5 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/14/2021

My 2009 chevy Hhr began leaking fuel. In April 2020 I had the fuel line repaired. I was told that this is a very common problem with the Hhrs because of where the fuel line is located. I just paid $1049 to have the fuel line replaced. I understand that the NHTSA is investigating this issue. I would like to add my complaint to your list of frustrated Hhr customers.

6 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2021

Started smelling smoke and the whole vehicle shut down with the being stuck on ignition. Couldn't open the doors and smoke was billowing out and fire start coming out of lower middle console. Luckily was able to open door and exit vehicle. Fire then erupted and quickly traveled straight down the center console to the rear of the car. Within minutes the car was totally engulfed in flames and was completely burned to nothing. Suffered several burns and smoke inhalation and the car and every thing in it was destroyed.

9 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/31/2016

Left side rear window blew up and shattered. Next, the rear windshield blew up and shattered both have been replaced, however someone could have been injured by the exploding glass since my car was full of it in both instances, I heard a pop on the first one while car was in motion on a highway. My car was parked (stationary) at my residence when the back windshield exploded. A friend visiting me told me my back windshield had shattered and glass was on the ground and inside the car. I have repair invoices for both replacements.

10 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2016

Approx : March 2016 - - 48000 miles, my cruise control system stopped functioning completely ,when turned on. Indicator light still works, researching I've found a simple burnt out brake light bulb may be the cause for this defective unrelated failure. Either way I'm not seeing any error messages or warnings alerting me to what problems I might really have so that they can be addressed. If there isn't a recall yet , maybe an investigation is in order. Tia, l-t-g.

11 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/26/2015

I am picking my car back up tomorrow and all mt papers are in it. . . Baci around 3/15 my etc light came on and the car jerked, this happened several time over the next couple months, took it in to dealership and they had it for 2 wks and could not figure it out and I was to let them know if it happened again. . . 8/26/15 was the last time it happened and the etc light came on for about 1 1/2 seconds and slowed me down almost to a stop and was almost rear ended!!! called, took it in and they have had it for 2 wks and they called and told me since they could not make it happen they could not fix it and it was not a mechanical problem. I am scared to (maybe) death to pick it up and drive it till it happens again and maybe causes an accident .

12 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2015

I have no idea where this is coming from but in the morning when I start my Hhr there is a very strong odor of silicon. It takes me about 30 min. To get to work and by the time I get to work I have the worst headache from smelling this the whole trip. It is stronger when the a/c in on. Not sure if this is where it is coming from but it will make you nauseated.

13 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2015

Today I made the mistake of leaving a dome light on while in church for a few hrs. Came out it started up with no problem. Got on the ferry parked and turned the car off. When I attempted to start up to get off the car was dead. Now this is the terror of that , the door locks didn't work, the horn was dead, the window locks didn't work and the steering was locked. I got the attention of a person passing and they opened the door from the outside. My daughter is totally disabled and she was asleep and the passenger seat. What if this had been some life or death matter and we needed to get out. Is this normal or is it something I didn't know to do. There have been so many recalls on this car, it should have been a total recall. I am so afraid for our lives and I don't know what to do. Terrified to get in it with her and go any where. Is there anything I can do to stay alive until it's paid off?.

14 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2015

After buying the Hhr the day before I went to work. On my way back home. I got off on my exit about half way down the ramp my side airbags went off. Then I pushed the brakes and they did not respond sending me into a meaden causing my wheel to snap almost all the way off.

15 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2014

Pulled in to driveway and went to exit vehicle. The plastic driver's door handle broke off in my hand. This basically left me stuck in the vehicle unless I crawled over the center console or unless I was able to roll down the electric window, pivot in the seat, and reach the outside door handle. Obviously in an accident, or vehicle fire, the extra time needed to exit, if the door handle broke off, is unacceptable. A very basic internet search shows that this is a very common problem with this vehicle model. An inconvenience for a younger driver but this could be a catastrophic failure for an older, less physical driver.

16 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2014

Turned the key and started my car and then I couldn't turn it off. I could take the key out but the vehicle would not shut off as the ignition switch appears to be stuck in the on position. Took it to gm dealer in salinas to ask about it but said could not assist me till Wednesday, granted it was Saturday so okay, but could not help me shut off the vehicle. Said it most likely would not be associated with the recall though it seems related.

17 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/04/2014

I have been trying t o get my sons ignition switch recalled fixed on his Hhr since June 4, 2014. The dealership and Chevrolet customer assistance center both keep telling me the part will be coming. I was told six weeks. It has been longer than six weeks and they have no idea when I will get the part!.

18 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

I have a 2009 chevy Hhr was has 2 recalls on it. I called to make an appointment to get the recalls repaired on my car as soon as I recieved the first which was 06/09/2014. I was told the parts wouls have to be ordered and I would get a call whaen they came in. On tues 08/26/2014 I recived a car in the mail that the parts were in and that ishould call to make an appoinment. I called jim butler that same day, and got an appointment that thurs. 08/28/2014. We dropped the car off that weds. Night. I was never told how long the service would take . So I called on 08/28/2014 in the afternoon and was told it would not be ready until Friday. Trying to get through to talk with a person at jim butler takes anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes to to talke with someone. I was never asked if I neede a loner car or anything. Friday 08/29/2014 we pick the car up around 7pm because thats when it was finished. On Saturday 08/30/2014 we had to have the car towed back to jim butler because the key was stuck in the brand new ignition and the car would not start. I did not recieve a phone call once the car got there, and of course it was a holiday weekend so they were not going to be open that following Monday 09/01/2014. I drove by jim butler on Sunday just to make sure it was there, and it was with the keys still stuck in the ignition. I called on Tuesday 09/02/2014 to find out what the status was, I was told they were working on it. I happendto be in the neighborhood so I stopped by to check, it was still in the same spot never even looked at, I was told by mike the manager( who was very rude) that other people had appoinment for today and that I would have to wait, I told him I should be a priority because my appoinment was last week and the car should ahve been fixed right that time. He had the nerve to ask me did it work when you left here. , im just getting my car back today 09/03/2014.

19 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2014

My 2009 chevy Hhr repeatedly has water in the front driver and passenger side floor. I am not sure where this is coming from, however, after I researched on line, this is an ongoing problem with this vehicle. Besides the floor being wet this causes a horrible smell, most likely mold in the vehicle. This needs to be investigated as from my findings, it is a flaw in design or manufacturing.

20 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2014

I was driving the vehicle- 2009 Chevrolet Hhr and I attempted to park in an auto dealer parking lot when I was unable to turn the vehicle off! I could not turn the key and I could not get the key out of the ignition switch so the vehicle just continued running. I drove home and removed the main fuse which resulted in the vehicle shutting down. I had to have the vehicle towed to a Chevrolet dealer where the switch and key were replaced at an expense of almost three hundred dollars. Prior to that problem and even now since the repairs were made I have to manipulate the key to start the vehicle. I certainly hope gm will honor this situation as I had previous nightmarish experience with them when I owned a 1999 malibu (remember the dexcool crisis) and after spending a considerable amount of money(over $2,000) in engine/intake/water pump. Thermostat repairs the class action resulted in my getting a check for $21. 00(that's twenty one). If this situation is resolved I would simply look forward to being reimbursed for the $291. 00 I just spent and having the ignition system checked thoroughly for defects and/or potential danger. It is so shameful that these auto makers and dealers are so damned dishonest.

21 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2014

She was driving and ran into a mailbox and the airbag did not deploy.

22 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2013

Vehicle ran fine entire day(12-20-2013), I parked to shop with my wife at a local mall. When we were ready to leave the vehicle would turn over and then immediately shut off. This happened at least 10 times, my battery was beginning to drain so I stopped. My wife and I decided to continue our shopping and come back to vehicle later. Once again I started the vehicle and it immediately shut off. I had to call a towing service (aaa) to tow us to a local repair shop. The next day I was told the vehicle started fine and they could not find any problem. The mechanic did tell us that the vehicle had previous error codes from last night pointing to ignition and starter units, but they found no problems. I have received numerous recall notices from gm describing this very thing and have requested a full refund of my towing fees ($95. 00 invoice#73066) and trying to set up my repair since the recall notices went out in April 2014. I have not heard anything since. Gm case # 71-1317180641 operator (jim).

23 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2013

Car would not turn off. Key would not turn. Eventually pulled fuse and got car to stop. Took to dealer next recalls came out later and I took it in three times to get recall things fixed. I still have same problems as other owners with my electrical system, the dic giving false information such as no air pressure in one of the tires, the abs and traction need repair etc. Steering wheel almost always shakes when brake pedal is pushed and sometimes seems like it is driving under its own control. I have loved the car since I bought it with less than 9,000 miles on it in December 2010, but I drive my handicapped husband and elderly mother to many doctor appointments and cannot handle the anxiety of being an accident waiting to happen all the time. There is already the feeling of helplessness in car accidents without one driving a car that can't be controlled at all times. And these things happen out of the blue without warning. It isn't like you have even a feeling that something may be going out or that a problem is beginning. It's just boom, here's the situation, handle it! I, at all times, must keep my mind on the fact that my brakes, steering, transmission and/or electrical system may fail as I am driving down the street. This does not make for a calm driving experience. Nervousness and high anxiety is not a condition that anyone should be in when handling a potentially deadly weapon in and around other people, animals and vehicles. All these other owners can't be wrong, maybe GMC should just recall the whole car and let us get one we don't have to be afraid of causing an accident, so we can concentrate on our own and other people's driving to prevent them. .

24 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2013

I turned the key and started my car and then I couldnt turn it off. I could take the key out but it wouldnt shut off > I see that there are many problems online like this but I dont see a recall. This is going to cost me alomost $ 500. 00.

25 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/31/2013

I went to open driver side door to get out of my parked car. Door handle would not release the door to open. I have to role done my window (power window) and open door from outside to be able to get out of my car trough the driver side door. Dealer said that whole new door panel is required at a cost of $450. 00 because the handle and trigger is part of the panel. The dealer went on to say that 100s of these panels have had to be replaced because of and engineered defect and gm does not want to cover the problem. This is a safety concern because if I had to get out my car in case of an emergency, the drivers door can not be opened unless the window is rolled down and opened from outside. I would be trapped in the driver seat if unable to get window opened. . Gm should be held responsible for their engineered defect. .

26 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2013

When I pulled into my driveway I could not shut my car off. It would not turn and I could not get the key out. I had to drive it to the dealer, thankfully they were still open for the day, to have it fixed. I ended up paying about $100 to have the ignition cylinder re-keyed.

27 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/07/2011

On may 26th of 2011, I bought a 2009 chevy Hhr. Actual miles was 43k. It now has 45k. I have not even made my first payment on the car when I experienced a problem. On July 7 after I arrived at work, I put the car in park and the key would not turn to shut the engine off. I had to disconnect the battery to shut the engine off so I could finish my work day. Got the car home and had to disconnect the battery again. When I contacted a chevy dealership and spoke with the service personnel about my car not shutting off, he said, “let me guess, the key is stuck in the ignition? I said yes and he quoted the price would be 3 or 4 hundred dollars to fix it. On July 8th, we had to have the car towed to a chevy dealership. Even the tow truck driver knew about the problem and said, “that is one of the reasons we have to tow in the Hhrs. On July 7th pm, I got on the internet and discovered that I was not the only one to experience this problem with the key stuck in the ignition. There have been many complaints about this. To my understanding, chevy knows about this problem but has failed to put out a recall. I do not have a lot of money. I am on a tight budget as many people are. I had to borrow the money to get the car fixed. It is a shame the quality of making a car has gone down hill. I think that chevy should fix this problem so that it does not reoccur again. I also think that people should be reimbursed for the money that they have had to spend on getting this problem fixed. So, my question for you is, how many complaints must it take for you to address this problem and issue out a recall? chevy should “man up and take responsibility for this problem.

28 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

I have a 2009 Hhr Chevrolet and lately I have been experiencing ignitions problems. On yesterday when my car was parked approimately around 7:00 p. M. I tried to shut the car down and remove key from ignition. I could not get the key out and the car would not shut down. All of the business that could help me were closed. I sat in that car from 7:00 p. M. Unti 2:15 a. M. The next morning, when all of the gas ran out of the car. Some may no thing this is emergency buyt when you are a women by yourself. It's quite urgent. A tow trucker drive came stayed about 3 minutes and said he could not assist me. No loss of life this time; but it can lead to that with crime running rampid. Where is the accountabilit? where is the recall? is everything in America just about $ and cents these days? what about the next time? I could not leave that car running on a public street.

29 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2010

I had a problem with the key getting stuck in the ignition with the vehicle still running. I had to disconnect the battery and have it repaired. It cost $600. 00 to repair this and this continues to be a problem on other Hhr's. I am now having the same kind of symptoms that my car was having before the ignition was replaced.

30 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2010

When Hhr is stopped on a hill, for a red light or from being parked on a hill or even a slope, it drifts backwards as soon as you go from having the brakes on, such as at a red light, to hitting the gas to go forward when the light turns green. This is very dangerous when there is a car behind you because the Hhr always drifts backwards. You have to be prepared to hit the gas quick and hope the car behind you isn't too close. Also, when backing up while on a hill, the car drifts forward even though you're hitting the gas causing the Hhr to come within inches of the car in front of it. We've had a number of close calls and continue to do so. It's a panicy situation because you're basically 'stuck' because as soon as you take you're foot off of the brake, it drifts and there's nothing you can do, but hope you can get out of the situation without causing an accident. It's scary, so you have to get your foot on the gas and hit it immediately and pray that you don't drift into the car in front of you or behind you, depending on the situation. This doesn't just happen occasionally - it will happen each time.
