1 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 11/22/2024

Fuel line is leaking near left rear wheel wheel.

2 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/30/2024

The contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Hhr. The contact stated that he noticed there was a fuel leak near the driver's side rear door. The contact stated that the tpms, esc, and check engine warning lights were illuminated. The contact researched the matter on line and determined the failure was related to NHTSA action number: pe20011 (fuel system, other, fuel/propulsion system, fuel system, gasoline). The contact called the local dealer, who informed him there were no recalls. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 136,440.

3 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2024

Last week we noticed gasoline showing up on the ground in front of the rear driver side tire. I looked underneath and found a pipe that seems to be corroded. I looked online and found that many people have the same problem, so I haven't had it checked at a dealership. The pipe continues to leak after you walk away and I'm afraid someone will discard a cigarette near the vehicle, or worse. We are generally home, and can be reached for inspection.

4 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2023

Gas leaking from fuel line near rear driver’s side tire.

5 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2023

Leaking fuel line near left rear wheel.

6 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2023

I was backing my car out of the garage and I noticed a line of liquid on the ground, indicating a leak. I immediately stopped the car, got out and took a look. I traced the leak back to the drivers side at the rear, just before the tire. I could see fuel dripping down from under the car. The exhaust pipe right near the dripping was also wet. I could smell gas and I confirmed that was what was dripping by smelling a drop after I let it fall on my finger. Definitely gasoline. After the dripping stopped, I pushed the car back into the garage. I used a quickjack to raise the car to get a better look at the area where the leak was coming from. There was massive corrosion/rust of the metal lines in the area. The leak was easily found by just looking for where the lines were wet. Even though fuel was no longer dripping (the engine was off so there was no fuel pressure anymore), there was still wetness from the gas leaking through the rusted area. I will not drive the car again until the leak has been repaired. Considering the fact that the exhaust pipe had also gotten wet from the leak, the chance of a fire was very likely. I consider myself very lucky to have found the leak when I did, rather than have a fire occur while driving. Even if I were to pull over and shut the engine off immediately, a significant amount of fuel would leak out and feed the fire as the fuel escapes under pressure. This certainly could cause the rest of the car to catch fire. This is clearly unsafe and dangerous. If the leak occurred after the car was put in the garage with the exhaust still hot, a fire could not only consume the vehicle but the garage and the house as well. That could cause injury or even death in a worst case scenario. This is clearly an unsafe design and a clear risk to both people and property. This absolutely should be the basis for a recall where the corroded lines are replaced free with new lines made of a more durable material such as stainless steel.

7 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/29/2023

Fuel line driver side rear tire leaking gas.

8 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2023

Fuel line has rusted and is leaking gas under the left rear wheel, near the tail pipe. First noticed by smell while driving, then witnessed gas leaking upon exiting the vehicle at home. Have not had vehicle serviced as I will have to have it towed due to safety concerns. Please continue the investigation into this issue as it is potentially life threatening and the number of complaints are concerning. The vehicle is available for inspection.

9 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2022

Rusted fuel line is leaking and spraying fuel on ground and exhaust.

10 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2022

Fuel smell / leak. Car developed a gas smell while driving and after getting out of the car a small amount of gas poured out in front of the passenger door on the drivers side. I was told my gas line has rusted through and will need to be replaced.

11 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2022

Leaking fuel lines in front of drivers side rear tire. Fuel lines appear to be rusted. Fuel lines are routed very near exaust pipe.

12 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2022

Started smelling gas when getting out of car. Smell comes from the rear, on the driver side. Upon inspection, this is caused by fuel line corrosion.

13 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2022

Something with steering and esc problem unknown for now. The fuel line leaked and needed replacement. The drivers wiper is in visibility.

14 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2021

Fuel line corroded and ruptured at the fuel line heat shield area along the car by the drivers side just in front of the back wheel. It was leaking profusely, especially when under pressure as when the engine is on. Went through a half tank of gas in 24 hours. Strong smell and huge, huge fire danger. I found many such reports of the exact same issue from many other Hhr owners. Took to belle tire in petoskey michigan for repair and they told me it's a very common problem with cobalts and Hhr's from the mid to late 2000's. Parts were only inspected by the repair garage. There were no warning lights. Found out by smell and sight and reduced engine performance.

15 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2021

Gas/fuel line leaking at lr door area, not noticed until gas smell. Poor design, wrapping fuel line in insulation near exhaust collects salt and water causing lines to rust, dripping raw gas. A safety hazard, a spark or cigarette butt could have caused a major fire, not only to the vehicle but surrounding vehicles and or property. A Chevrolet Hhr is the same platform as a Chevrolet cobalt and a Saturn ion, all have the same safety-related issue. I contacted a local Chevrolet dealer they were unable to repair for 4 days, and would not cover needed repairs under a recall or warranty. Imagine leaking gas puddle under the vehicle in a parking lot with children and people walking nearby, fireworks! a recall is desperately needed ASAP!.

16 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2021

Kept smelling gasoline. . . Took it to a shop. . . Gas lines rusted throughout the whole car but worst of it was at the muffler. It cost $716 to have all lines replaced. Is there a possibility of at least getting half my bill reimbursed? hard hit to take when you live from social security check to social security check.

17 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2021

I have a 2009 chevy Hhr with only 62k miles. Recently while driving out of town there was a strong gas odor in the car all the way home. We had also parked the car in a relatives attached garage leaving a gas odor. When parked at home a puddle of gasoline formed under the car. The fuel leak was from corroded fuel lines on the driver side in front of the rear tire. Upon inspection both supply and return fuel lines were corroded in an approximate 5 foot span. This fuel leak put us at risk of fire and also the entire garage/house where the car was parked. I contacted general motors about the problem and was told to take it to a dealer for service. I asked general motors for assistance in the cost and they said it would require a diagnostic by the dealership. I contacted the dealership and was told I would get no assistance per general motors pet equation.

18 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2021

Fuel line corrosion causing leaking of gas that puddles on the ground below. The vehicle is unsafe to drive, or even leave parked in a driveway due to a gas leak!! the smell of gas is very strong due to an active leak under the driverside rear door, no warnings, just smell, visual of drips, and fuel pooled under the car. The car was parked. There is an open investigation started in 2020. . . How long will it take to recall these manufacturers' defect???.

19 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2021

Fuel lines rusted out car has 33000 miles on it.

20 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/22/2021

I own a 2009 Chevrolet Hhr. When I started the vehicle, a fuel odor was detected. I saw gas leaking from near the rear driver's side tire onto the driveway. Fuel line has rusted through near the hot muffler. Very dangerous condition.

21 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2021

Fuel lines corroded.

22 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2021

Fuel line actively leaking under the driverside passenger area.

23 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/14/2021

My 2009 chevy Hhr began leaking fuel. In April 2020 I had the fuel line repaired. I was told that this is a very common problem with the Hhrs because of where the fuel line is located. I just paid $1049 to have the fuel line replaced. I understand that the NHTSA is investigating this issue. I would like to add my complaint to your list of frustrated Hhr customers.

24 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/08/2021

Puddle of fuel near rear left wheel well noticed when parked. Smells of fuel. Residue can be seen on and around polymer block where fuel lines meet.

25 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2021

I noticed a strong odor of fuel coming from under my car (a 2009 Hhr lt2). After being driven I noticed fuel leaking out from under the car in front of the left rear wheel well. My husband got under there and notice that the two fuel lines are rusted through by the plastic clamp. I notified the dealership where I bought the car and I am taking it in today to be fixed.

26 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2020

Gas smell and leaks resulting from fuel line corrosion. I own two 2009 Chevrolet Hhrs. I replaced fuel line on my first vehicle a year ago. Now the second vehicle needs same repair.

27 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 11/06/2020

Reference odi resume pe 20-011,car stored in a garage as a special interest vehicle, while accomplishing routine maintenance car was idling at the entrance of the garage. Near fire experience, fuel line ruptured just above left rear wheel spilling on to hot exhaust. Cut off engine, but pressure in the line kept spraying on to hot exhaust pipe, stood by with fire extinguisher until leak subsided . Pulled back insulation around lines over exhaust and found the steel fuel line rusted through. There are several repair options, a gm shop charges over $1100. 00, repalcement kits range from $95. 00 up to nearly $600. 00.

28 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/24/2020

I have fuel leaking from a fuel line in front of the left rear tire. I researched the issue and see that this is happening to others. What is recommended as a repair???.

29 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2020

Went to my dad's. Parked in garage. My niece later commented she smelled gas. We checked furnace, then went out to garage to check the car. We found a sizeable puddle on the driver's side in front of the left side rear wheel. I backed the car out of the garage. Later we noticed a softball sized puddle under my car. Later I contacted a local mechanic who advised that this is a common problem with chevy cobalts and Hhrs, that I should have it towed and under no circumstances should I drive it as he couldn't guarantee I would have enough time to get out of the car should something happen. When we noticed the fuel was leaking, the car was parked.

30 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2020

Saturday, October 10, 2020, I was at my dad's. My car was parked in the garage. My niece came up saying she smelled gas and was concerned. When we couldn't find an issue in the house, I said maybe it was my car. We went out to the garage and noticed a large puddle on the left side (driver's side) in front of the left rear wheel. I moved the car out to the driveway and we could see within seconds it had left a puddle the size of a softball. I left and drove home 30 minutes later. I took the car in to cassidy tire later that week. They were unable to find the leak, but the mechanic was pretty freaked out and told me my car was leaking gas. We called a local mechanic and he mentioned that this is a known issue with Chevrolet cobalts and Hhrs. I was told that I should definitely not drive the car wherever I take it as I might not be able to get out of the car safely should something happen. I've been out to the car a few times and the smell of fuel is noticeable. After googling the issue and finding an abc news report from July 2020 and another article about a potential recall and an investigation into the issue, I called a local chevy dealer to mention the issue. I was told there was no recall for it on my VIN and that I should have it towed to them for repair and was given an estimate for the repair. What caused the leak? I can only guess that it is the corrosion of the metal? I don't know that I ever noticed the smell of gas before the 10th. I did take it in for an oil change late March, early April and no one mentioned an issue with fuel leaking or the smell of gas. I have had many cars in my lifetime and I have never experienced an issue like this.

31 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2020

For sometime I smelled gas every time I parked in the garage. One day my son smelled the gas and noticed a wet spot by the drivers side rear tire. Took it to the local firestone dealer where they found a fuel leak.

32 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2020

The fuel line on my Chevrolet Hhr 2009 rusted and had to be replaced at a cost to me of $1300. 00. The insulated covering around the fuel line caused the rusting because it retained water. Smelled gas while it was stationary.

33 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2020

The fuel lines underneath the driver's side passenger door have rotted. They are dripping gas. It is happening right where the bracket holds the lines.

34 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2020

Fuel lines rusted by drivers side rear tire and under drivers side back door. Fuel leaking under car when stopped and underway.

35 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2020

Tl the contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Hhr. The contact stated that a smell of fuel was perceived from the vehicle. The contact looked underneath the vehicle and noticed that the fuel line was rusted and leaked fuel on the front driver's side, by the rear tire. The dealer was not called. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000. Fe.
