1 Door Latch problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Lumina

Failure Date: 05/25/2010

I have a 1999 chevy Lumina, that in 2007 both the rear door latches broke a few months apart I contacted the dealer both timeas and had the latch replaced at a cost of 2 approx. 200. 00 each I had asked if there was a defect in the part once the same thing happened to the other rear door they replied no. I thought this was strange since I only use the veh to go to work and rarely use the back doors. The first time this happened my aunt was in the rear seat when I went slowly around a bend and the door flew opened and would no latch to close. I expressed my concern about the safety of the latch letting loose without warning, and the a few months later the same thing happened while driving luckily no one was in the back seat. After having both door hinges replaced with new parts at a cost of over 400. 00 I thought that would be the end of the problem. Today while coming home from work the rear passenger door flew open, I have concerns for the safety if someone would be in the veh, gm does not seem to share my concerns and seem not interested in trying to resolve a safety issue.

2 Door Latch problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Lumina

Failure Date: 04/07/2007

I smelled smoke in my vehicle, so I pulled over. It seemed to be coming from the vent. My friend thought it was electical, so he started pulling fuses to stop the problem. I discerned that the problem was the motor that opened and closed the automatic door opener on the van. I told my friend to just get out and I called the fire department immediately, but by the time they had arrived my car was fully engulfed in flames. I am thankful that I did not have my children with me at the time as I don't know if I could have gotten them out in time. My three year old would have been in the built-in car seat which is next to the door. The fire happened so fast. I might add I have never had any problems with the door or automatic door opener. My car was totaled.

6 Door Latch problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Lumina

Failure Date: 01/01/1999

I bought the car new in April 1997 . A few months after I contacted th dealer and told them my wife was locked out of her car 3 times , with the car running and no way to get in because the auto door locks lock when she gets out of the car. The dealer replaced all door locks and problem went away for about 8 months, then if started again about and the dealer told me they replaced the locks again. Now on xmas week 1998 it happened to me, and on new years day 1999. Took the car for inspection and told dealer that it's happening again and I was concerned my wife will get locked out and be stuck somewhere and could get hurt since we live in the phila area. They told me they could not replace unless they could duplicate problem. I called gn tech ass. And they told me the same thing. I contacted my state rep and he is sending me a copy of the lemon law. This happens when the car is running and you get out and close the door. Unfortunatly it only happens occasionly. You can close the door a hundred times and it mi.
