11 problems related to air bag have been reported for the 1998 Chevrolet Malibu. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Takata recall - while driving home from work at night my daughter (sole occupant) heard a loud explosion and windshield shattered. She looked to right and saw that the passenger airbag had deployed. She had not hit anything including bumps or pot-hole. Not sure if it's a takata but deployment could of cost her life.
The contact owns a 1998 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving 5 mph, the contact's vehicle stalled and was struck on the driver side by another vehicle. Most of the air bags deployed; however, one air bag did not, which caused injuries that required medical attention. A police report was filed. The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v400000 (electrical system) and manufacturer recall number: n140350. The failure mileage was unknown.
When applying brakes front end pulsates which produces a grinding noise. Dealer notified. The vehicle experienced vibration in the front end when braking. The vehicle has numerous brake rotor repairs. The calipers locked up and the piston seals leaked. The brake light was inoperative because the circuit lost it's contact. The horn was inoperative. The dealer replaced the air bag and repaired the horn power wire from the horn pad to the horn contact ring.
Consumer purchased vehicle from dealer, and vehicle does not have working airbags. Consumer is very concerned about safety if involved in a collision. Dealer never advised consumer that airbags had been previously deployed and were not reconstructed.
I own a 1998 chevy Malibu. This vehicle will cut off while driving. I bought this vehicle brand new in June 1998 and had to take it to the shop for repair the next month. The service department at shaver motors has never been able to fix it. There is something wrong with this car's electrical system. I was driving in chicago on 80 90 toll road and this vehicle stopped for no reason while I was doing 55 miles per hour. I listed one incident date but have had numerous other problems. Also, when I first purchased the vehicle I had to replace the tires after less than 3000 miles, they were also bad.
My wife had just pulled out of a driveway on to a highway when a truck pulled in front of her. She hit headon into the side of him. After he cleared the area she was able to drive across 4 lanes of road and into a parking lot across the street, as she entered the lot both air bagrs deployed very slowly never touching her. The speed control has been repaired several times and still continues to deacative while driving, some times many times in a row other trips not at all.
Went to Saturn to have the problem fixed and they said it (airbags) was not covered in the extended warranty. And they felt that it was the manufacturer default. Air bags deployed at a full stop. No accident happened. Called gm company and they said they would notify me in 48 hrs. I contacted them and they (gm) said they need more time to contact the Saturn tech. Mng. They (gm) are supposed to call me Tuesday and tell me if they can repair my car. They are giving me the run-around. I feel that I did not do anything to cause my airbags to deploy and that gm is fully responsible since I have only had the car for 5 mths, and that it is a manufacturer defect.
At 11k mi when brakes applied at 50+ mph front tires severely shimmied, dealer machined and reinstalled front disc, as of 8/8/99 symptoms have returned. At 14k mi a thumping noise began in the right front tire, dealer replaced both lower control arms. At 3k mi heater blower motor started making a loud noise, dealer replaced blower motor. At 9k mi heater blower motor started to again make a loud noise, dealer removed and reinstalled blower fan, motor still makes a loud noise.
Horn inoperable. Entire airbag assembly replaced and horn still has problems.
No deployment of air bag during vehicle collision (front end).
Power steering failed, and the vehicle suddenly accelerated. Driver lost control and hit a rock. Upon impact, none of the vehicles airbags deployed.
