Four problems related to front seat belt retractor have been reported for the 1999 Chevrolet Malibu. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
While driving 20-25 mph rearended another vehicle. Seatbelt did not restrain consumer, and he hit head on steering wheel. Damage to vehicle was $ 3600.
Front passenger seat belts do not retract to stowwed position after use, and often do not retract after leaning forward. Seatbelt repeatedly gets wedged between door and b-pillar when closing door when exiting vehicle which causes damage to seatbelt hardware. When seatbelt occasionally fails to retract after leaning forward, it creates slack in restraint system that presents a safety hazard to the front seat driver/passenger. I have contacted the service department at the purchasing dealer and they do not show any service bulletin for this problem.
Driver's side restraint lock up when the brakes are applied in normal stopping. Also, vehicle experiences extended stopping distance intermittently when brakes are applied. Dealer has inspected the vehicle . With out jumping on the breaks the driver side seat belt will lock up, so you can't look to left side to get into lane or get on hwy on ramps.
While making a right or a left vehicle seat belts locked up, causing consumer to be pinned down to seat. Dealer has been notified. Please provide further informaton.
