1 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2020

When starting the Malibu the dashboard lights illuminate and when the key is turned to start the car the lights go out and the fuel gauge drops to zero or empty and the car will not start. This problem also occurs when driving the car and the ignition system shuts down leaving you with no steering assist and the engine is not running. So this problem is both in a standing start and while operating the car. I had initially brought the car to devan lowe gm dealer and service department for repairs and they discovered the fuel pump was not working properly. They replaced the fuel pump and the problem with the ignition is still persisting. This creates a dangerous condition for the driver and other cars on the road. I would request that GMC have the car towed to the devan lowe service department for troubleshooting purposes in coordination with gm technical department and reach a resolution as to the cause of the problem and issue a recall for all affected cars.

13 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2010

My wife drove our 2001 Malibu around in the morning, after parking it in the driveway until the afternoon it would not start. It sat for 3 day until I could research how to fix it. The passlock system was failing. The system will not recognize your key and the car will not start. This seems to be a major issue for these vehicles, numerous accounts documented on the internet. To bypass it you have to wait 10 mins and hope the reset takes place and a replacement could cost you upwards of a thousand dollars. A ten minute wait to start a car I own is ridiculous.

18 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2008

Car will not start - theft system light comes on. I have tried the passlock "fix" of turning key to on for 10 minutes, shutting off and trying to restart but no luck on the car starting. The issue has gone on for over 3 weeks, each day getting worse and worse. I have taken the car to a shop and diagnostics came up negative and car started. 3 weeks later, car won't start again. Have a mechanic come look at it, he sees nothing wrong with it except that the fuel ignition isn't working - probably because of the passlock theft system!!.

Vehicle was fairly cool having only traveled about a mile from home. After being stopped at a busy intersection, my car died while accelerating into the intersection. After I stopped the vehicle and switched on my hazard lights, I was able to restart the vehicle without a problem. Had this been a time when my vehicle wouldn't start for 10 minutes, this could have created a major traffic problem. Fortunately, no one was injured.

22 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2006

Three times car wouldn't start when key was put in ignition. Had it towed to dealer each time. When dealer tried to start car each of the three times, it started every time except the last time. 1st time (oct 2005) dealer ran diagnostic test revealing nothing and replaced no parts. 2nd time (Jan 2006) dealer replaced ignition switch and sensor for $450. 3rd time (June 2006) dealer couldn't start car, but waited 1-1/2 days to run diagnostic tests so when they finally got to looking at the car it started up again. Dealer ran diagnostic test which again revealed nothing since the car was running again. Dealer wanted to talk about replacing more parts (fuel pump and the ignition switch again) but I said no and took my car back. Dealer cannot explain since 1st time why this is happening. This is now a very unreliable car since we never know when it will happen.

23 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2005

Type of vehicle- 2001 chevy Malibu on at least 5 occsasions, the vehicle has failed to start. The battery is ok, as all accesories ork perfect. The car has had fuel, and we actually replaced the fuel pump, just to see if this was the problem. It will act as though it wants to start. I have had an automotive technician try to see what it is by hooking up to a diagnostics machine, although as quick as it is released from the wheel dolly, it starts, as if jarring the car makes a difference. In light of this we are unable to locate the problem, although we know it is likely related to a misfiring of a wire to the computer. After hooking up to machine when it starts, no fault codes are shown. It is very frustrating. The engine will crank, fuel pressure ok. Ignition system plugs ahve fire. All normal systems are good, however engine will not fire.

26 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2003

At approximately 30000 miles my car started hesitating when starting. The dealer could find no fault and I kept driving with only periodic problems. Then my gas gauge, radio, engine check light and passive alarm system kept coming on. At, 43,000 miles the car would not start. The dealer said the key had lost its memory but I still kept having the same problems. At, 48,354 miles the car totally went out. After having the car for several days the dealer said it was the ignition switch. Under California law the ignition system is covered to 50,000 miles but the dealer stated teh ignition switch is not part of the ignition system. After writting chevy complaint dept many times I got no where because all they do is calll the dealer, they do not go with an independent body just the dealer that gave me the advice in the first place. I had the dealer return the bad part to me and want to know if this part is covered. I paid 400. 00 to have it fixed. The dealer did give me a 75. 00 credit because it was never my key memory they stated it was the ignition switch the entire time. Now, the car is at 54,000 miles and coolant is leaking around, in and near the engine. I have kept this car in good repair and have all receipts. These major parts should not be wearing down this fast. The dealer had to change the hazard switch shortly after I first got the car.
