The characteristics of the problem are as follows: the engine just dies randomly. When the engine dies, I noted the gauges all indicated the key was in the off position, even though the key had not been touched. They by turning the key to the off position and wiggling it only after bringing the vehicle to a complete stop and putting the gear shift in the park position, could I get the car to start and be on my way. This same condition happens at 65 mph on the freeway; at 0 mph; 5 mph; approaching a stop sign; slowing the vehicle, and other condition while driving that you can think of type driving conditions . I have had the ignition switch replace twice and that has not cured the problem.
:takata recall" purchased and next day went by dealership as the taillights were inoperatable. He said bring it when it wasn't raining or wife was there. I went to crank it to go to dr. And it wouldn't crank. I thought it was fuel pump. After a week of not cranking I called a mechanic and he said he would check it out. I had to have it towed. It was the ignition switch. Drove the day was fixed and drove and check engine light came on. We didn't turn off but drove back to where we got it running. He put the light to it again and still showed iginition switch. He told us to be careful until you get it fixed. I called chev dealer and said they didn't have in stock would have to order for recall. I found out then the recall was for 2 keys. I stopped by gro store on way home from church and went got in car and all the lights came on. Brake light, fuel light even though it was full, check engine light, battery, and they all stayed on until I got home about 2 miles. This is not just a complaint, it is for my safety and for everyone else's. What if we ended up wrecking because of this igination switch. All these problems and only had it less than 3 months and only 100,000. I am not able to walk any distance bcause of breathing. Something needs to be done before one of these cars ends up killing someone. The first time this occurred, I was in motion but 2nd it was parked in driveway. When I turned the ignition switch off, it also made a metal scrubbing sound and would not stop until I got it completely off. .

Gm has a recall on ignition switch (gm#14350). We had the work done at a gm dealer for the recall. (dealer provides 2 key rings and a key cover and calls it fixed. ) apparently it didn't work. Car currently in my local mechanic shop for routine maintenance. During inspection, mechanic found the vehicle needs a new ignition switch assembly to solve the same problem. Mechanic says car extremely unsafe to drive unless replaced. He took a video of my ignition showing that just touching the key while in ignition causes car to turn off. (have 20 yr relationship with mechanic - very reliable. ) please investigate if gm is really doing the proper work for the recall or just sugar coating a dangerous defect.
I had an ignition switch replaced by a dealer (dimmitt Chevrolet, clearwater, FL) because my key was stuck in it. The same dealer also replaced my key and key casing because of a recall. After that I starting noticing that my car would intermittently cut off forcing me to put in neutral and restart. I thought it may be a clogged fuel filter and had that replaced. The issue still exists and it is a dangerous situation to me and my family not knowing when my car will just stop running, especially while driving at highway speeds. I checked and do not see a gm recall on my model for some reason.

On or around December 19, 2014, I contacted gm, by telephone, concerning recall 14350 for our 2002 Chevrolet Malibu. This call was following a letter I had sent, dated December 8, 2014. I feel this recall was related to an ignition switch problem we had back in June 2013. In June 2013 I took this vehicle to the dealership because the car engine shut off will driving. I was told the ignition switch had to be replaced. This repair cost $479. 19. After receiving this recall notice, I requested that this money be refunded and was told that they were unrelated and I could not be reimbursed. I feel strongly that I am owed the refund of my money paid to the dealership. Thank you.

Update - faulty ignition switch/lock cylinder failure: ignition key could not be removed after parking the vehicle. Gear was in park and brake was depressed (would not move either). Could not turn the key or start the vehicle. Tried everything. Vehicle was towed to sts in ewing NJ. They worked on the vehicle and were able to free up the key from the ignition, however when they reinserted the key they could not turn the ignition/ start the car. The brake stayed depressed and they could not get the gear out of park. They had to replace the entire ignition unit, including the ignition switch, as the lock cylinder wasn't working. They ordered the parts and received the code from a local Chevrolet dealer. Total cost to replace parts and repair was $689. 75. This appears to be a common problem with this vehicle, and other gm vehicles were recalled for this problem (14113c part of 14092). There was also a recent recall (14350) as the dealer had to install a key insert and key rings to prevent an unintended ignition key rotation. I believe my current ignition problem is related to these recalls.

My 2002 Chevrolet Malibu LS left me stranded at a busy fueling station. The car refused to start due to the faulty passlock ignition switch system. These parts were replaced at an authorized gm service center at approximately 47,000 miles due to the same issue of refusing to start. Now at around 21,000 miles later the parts have failed again. Gm and NHTSA need to resolve these safety issues. I don't feel safe in this car, and I don't believe it is reliable. Wake up this is yet another gm ignition problem that has been known for decades! anyone in doubt just do an internet search on gm passlock or Chevrolet Malibu ignition problems.

Car wont start due to passlock system malfunction,I must let car sit for 10 minutes with ignition switch in on position then turn key off for 20 seconds then restart, this happens about every 4 to 5 starts, this is a known problem and gm will not recall and fix. Please search internet to verify problem.

My car started shutting off out of nowhere. The theft light comes on and it locks me out for ten minutes. This has been going on for a year. I backed out of a one way street, the car shut off and the theft light locked me out for ten minutes on a one way street where traffic could not get around me. Since, there has been a constant ding in my dash. I changed the emergency relay switch in the dash with no luck. Now it constantly has a dinging noise and locks me out about every 4-5 starts. This is very aggravating and with as many complaints that has been reported, I'm surprised it hasn't been recalled. I am very happy to say that I know that chevy doesn't claim their mistakes so maybe more people will have the same thought that I have never to buy another Chevrolet. Very bad for bussiness. Reviews said that even paying to get a new ignition switch will only delay it from happening again. Chevrolet, own up to your mistakes. This is dangerous. Other than this I have had to get a new k frame and my gas tank is rusting out due to no guards being put on the vehicle to protect it and while I'm venting the manufactures over-torqued a seal upon manufacturing to cause the oil and coolant to leak into one another.
I drove about 2 miles to my sisters house and turned my car off. When I went back out to start my car 20 min later, it would not start. Aaa said my key had to be reset and it would cost about $80. He towed my vehicle to aaa plus. They advised me the next day that it would be $477. 29. $302. 10 for an ignition switch. $42 for dia electrical labor and $77. 70 for rr ignition switch and recode. I was informed that they had to rekey my car, because this is a recurring issue with the 2002 Malibu's. If this is true, then chevorlet should have a recall for the ignition switch. $477 is extremely high for something that I have no control of. I am a senior citizen and can not afford this cost nor can I afford to be out somewhere when my vehicle stops.
Letter from congressman goodlatte on behalf of constituent re 2002 Malibu recall. The consumer stated the vehicle stalled. The ignition switch was replaced on three separate occasions. The consumer is seeking reimbursement. Updated 04/08/15,.
The passlock system on my 2002 model Malibu has failed several times causing my daughter and grandchild to be "stuck" at different locations away from home. The system even failed during her driving one day which could have been a very bad situation for her as well as other drivers. Luckily, she was able to control the car as it completely shut down. I took the car to Chevrolet and they told me the fuse box had shorted out due to rain (?) as well as the ignition switch was screwed up. Anyway, over the course of 1 year, I spent a total of approximately $1700. 00 in so called repairs until I found out about the 10 minute trick. Nevertheless, the 10 minute trick turned out to be a 1 hour trick just yesterday. And Chevrolet won't fix the problem?!?!?! this is a nuisance and dangerous as well.
The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated the ignition failed to start after numerous attempts. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer on three separate occasions where the ignition switch was replaced each time. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 16,152. Updated 08/14/lj.
Driving car and it would die. First occurance was under warranty. Car taken to dealer. Dealer said fuel pump was bad and replaced pump. Same problem ocurred out of warranty. Noticed that some of the gages and lights on dash also quit when this happened. I could hit the key and they would come back on, and the car would restart. Dealt with this for about 2 yrs because the cost of a new switch was more than I could afford at the time. Finnally dissassembled the ignition switch when problem got too bad. Discovered that gm had not used the normal heavy wiper style contacts that most ignition switches have. They used a plastic cam that pushes pins that operate very light spring style contacts. I found that the contacts had arced and were not making good contact. Used very fine emery cloth to clean contacts, reassembled switch, and problem was solved. Car starts and runs fine for now, but as soon as contacts arc enough, problem will return. I have noticed that there are many many people who have the same problem and the dealership is telling them that the problem is in the security system. Well its not. Anyone who has a minor amount of mechanical ability can fix the problem in about an hour. Be sure and consult a repair manual on the proper removal of the ignition switch from the dash. Its not hard, but there is a trck to it.
While placing the key inside the ignition switch vehicle would start. Ut when consumer turn the vehicle off and attempted to remove the key it would not come out. When the vehicle was turned off and the key was cstuck in the ignition consumer could shift from park to reverse without applying the brakes. Consumer took the vehicle to dealer for inspection, and mechanic maintained that the problem could not be duplicated with the key's failure to come out of the ignition switch. But the shifting from park to reverse was duplicated and repaired. The key won't come out of the ignition. When the key is stuck in the ignition the car will come out of park without the consumers foot on the brake.
Upon putting the key into the ignition and turning it ignition switch failed to move. The remedy was to have the entire ignition switch replaced. Five months later the same thing recurred, and again the switch had to be replaced.
