1 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 12/31/2019

My 09 chevy Malibu lt brake lights will illuminate without the brake pedal being pressed. Therefore signalling to other drivers that I am slowing, when in fact I am not. Also when the brake pedal is deliberately pressed to indicate the vehicle is slowing, the lights go out entirely, signalling to other drivers that I am not slowing down when in fact I am! this is a huge safety issue! I parked my vehicle today January 1, 2020 to test the functionality of my brake lights and the brake lights illuminated while I was outside of the vehicle, indicating I was pressing the brake pedal. Once the pedal was compressed, the rear lights went out entirely indicating the brake pedal was not compressed. Also the cruise control of the vehicle has never worked properly since purchasing the vehicle. It will not initiate or maintain set speed causing fluctuations in travel speed. So I refuse to use the feature as this too is a real safety concern.

2 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2019

While the vehicle is in motion the dash will display the traction control service light and the screen will read service traction service esc, the brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is not pushed and turn off when it is pushed. The cruise control also can not be engaged. The brake switch was replayed however all problems came back 2 weeks later. All these issues have been on going.

3 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2018

When driving the vehicle the service traction service esc & esc off lights come off/on seems to be worse when I turn the vehicle will drive rough at times, also the cruise control will fail to work. Got a recall on this in 2017 took it into a dealer shop who applied gel to connectors said that fixed the problem, it certainly did not. I do not know if this is safe to drive my vehicle since it is the only one I own I do not have a choice. Since this has been going on for more than a year now I can not give an exact date but it does happen daily. . I need the repairs made by gm not me.

4 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2018

My 09 Malibu began acting up 1 yr ago when using cruise control, the security light would come on the car would bog down like it was losing power and the service esc and traction control off light would come on, then about 3 min liter it would all turn off, my mechanic did not know why. Recently it has been misfiring and showing lights that say service esc, traction control off and the check engine light blinks as car bugs down like it is losing power. It does this at 30 mph and 50 mph. When I get the light check it says misfire in cylinder 3. I have changed the plug and coil multiple times in last 2 months. Upon googling I found many others had the same issue with the same make and model. This started June 2017.

5 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2017

My brake lights stay on when I am driving the car. The cruise control will just stop working and the car of course slows down at this point. Yesterday the low traction and eic light came on. This has been going on for several months with the brake lights and cruise control the low traction and eic problem just started yesterday. I have read page after page of complaints on this same thing happening on this model year make of car. I have had to take my car in for several recalls but I have not seen one on this particular issue. My car has 138,000 miles on in it and of course this happens while it is in motion on the highway road street etc. It could not happen if the car was not in motion. This is a scary thing to be driving your vehicle and pray your going to make it to where you are going without a crash.

6 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2016

Recall fix failure - the recall fix was applied by the dealership for the 'brake lights may or may not randomly illuminate' issue, NHTSA action 13005, however it is only temporary. After a few months the identical symptoms occur at the same frequency. No new symptoms are present and no previous symptoms are absent. These include; brake lights illuminating with no pressure on the brake pedal, brake lights turning off when pressure is applied to brake pedal (including holding the brakes at a stop), cruise control failing to activate, traction control turning off, esc turning off, and vehicle gearing down (as low as 3rd gear at 60 mph before intervention) to assist by engine braking. Most symptoms occur at standstill as well as city and highway speeds. The dealership's stance is that, once a recall is applied, the ticket is closed and is the vehicle owner's responsibility to cover the cost of further fixes.

7 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2016

In December of 2014, a Chevrolet dealer performed repairs to address NHTSA campaign number: 14v252000 (I had not experienced any problems related to this issue at the time). Recently I have been experiencing the symptoms related to this recall, including the "service esc" and "service traction" messages, the brake pedal requiring extra pressure to get the vehicle out of park, and the disabling of cruise control. I have not had the opportunity to check if the brake lights also exhibit the problem described in the recall. The problem has triggered while I'm braking, as well as when I was at highway speed with the cruise control engaged, without applying the brakes.

8 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2015

The contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. While the cruise control was activated, it randomly deactivated. Also, when the brake pedal was depressed, the center brake light would not illuminate and the rear brake lights illuminated very dimly. The contact also indicated that the transmission was replaced due to failures that prevented the vehicle from accelerating normally. No further information was available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 70,000.

9 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2014

After filing two complaints with you, and receiving a recall alert from you, I am being told by gm that my vehicle, a 2009 Malibu built between the years specified in your recall notice, is not included in the recall you alerted me about. How is this possible? the referenced recall # 14v252000, as he experienced the same malfunction, as described in the recall. The consumer has invoices, that date bate to 2011, where he had to take the vehicle, back to the dealer several times, for an inoperable cruise control and esc lighting illuminating. Updated 07/16/14.

10 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2014

Beginning on April 15, 2014 my car flashes esc off, service esc, service traction. This happens often and it turns off the traction control in my car and causes the cruise control to cease function.

11 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2014

For the last year or so I have been having issues with my break lights ingaging and my cruise control inoperable. I currently have a 2009 Malibu. A friend was driving behind me once and mentioned later that I was riding my brakes all the way home. I was not. I notice a few days later this happened again, but it was dusk and I could see from my rear window the reflection of my break light, it was on and my brake was not ingaged. This has happened several other times, to my knowledge. If I tap my breaks the lights will go off, however will come back on within a few seconds. I'm highly concerned about a rear end collision. If I actually do have to stop quickly and the person behind me hitting me because my break lights are not functioning properly. I've taken it in to a mechanic and they can't replicate the issues. It's intermittent.

12 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 12/16/2013

The brake lights will come on randomly. This also causes the cruise control to kick off. The lights will stay on for varying lengths.

13 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2013

While driving at 70 mph with cruise control engaged, the third brake light in the rear window would randomly come on causing the cruise control to shut off. Soon after this happens I get warnings on the dash to service the ecs and traction control system. It has been getting gradually worse and with the brake light activating, could cause drivers behind me to think I am stopping when I am not. This problem was mentioned in an article in USA today a couple of weeks ago, that gm will be issuing a recall for.

14 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2013

The cruise control was malfunctioning and after researching the problem I discovered that the brake lights could also be affected. When applying the brake the light in the rear window would actually go completely off. The repair is described in TSB 08-05-22-009c and was completed. The problem appears to be fixed. However it appears there was a previous recall for this type of problem with earlier general motors models and the problem is still recurring. Chevrolet has not send any kind of notice to owners about this potentially dangerous situation. The computer code c0131 is activated when this occurs.

15 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 06/22/2013

The contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while driving 75 mph with the cruise control activated, the cruise control disengaged independently and the contact noticed that the brake lights were illuminated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure and current mileage was 80,000.

16 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2013

This is a recurring problem, beginning nearly 2 years ago. I have had the vehicle in for repairs several times, but the last documentable incident is March 9, 2013. Esc service light comes on, cruise control shuts down, brakes lights illuminating when they should not, and not illuminating when they should. There's always been some "thing" they find wrong, from re-calibration of the esc system to this last incident, where they told me it was the brake light switch! I had just had the vehicle in to have a headlight replaced the prior weekend and I never noticed the brake lights not working, and the dealer that replaced the headlight never mentioned it either. I'm thinking they would have if they could charge me to fix something additional on the car. I just paid $250 to replace what I was told was a burned out brake light switch on March 9th, (palmen motors, kenosha, WI), and its already recurring. I heard part of possible recall on wnn abc news and started researching and ended up at your site this morning. I want to report this. There's no telling how many dollars have been paid to mechanics to fix unnecessary repairs because of this! I am furious! I am hoping that if this is a recall, or made one, I can at least get some of my money back! thank you,.

17 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 12/07/2012

The brake lights began to turn on when the brake pedal was not depressed, even when the vehicle was in park. When driving, the brake lights will stay on and the cruise control does not work. These problems may only last a couple of minutes but may also persist for greater than an hour at a time. The problem manifests itself somewhat unpredictably but its frequency and duration have increased over time.

18 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2012

The vehicle began to display a "service traction/esc" message on the hud. Brake lights would come on randomley and stay on, sometimes for minutes, sometimes for hours. As a result of brake lights being on, cruise control was not functional. Had a sensor replaced which temporarily resolved the issue. The problem has returned 53 weeks and 17,000 miles later.

19 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2011

The brake lights on my daughter's 2009 Chevrolet Malibu come on while she is driving & her cruise control stops working. She took her car into the dealer & 2 other people were there with the same complaint. The service dept. Said it was fixed but the same day as she picked it up, it happened again. While driving down the highway @ 70 mph with the cruise on, the brake lights come on and stay on until she presses the brake pedal. The brake lights go out while she is applying the brakes & come back on when she releases the brake pedal. Also, she also can no longer set her cruise control. After the vehicle has been parked for a few hours, the cruise & brake lights work properly. Anyone following her, especially @ night, might assume that she is stopping while driving & driving whilst stopping. I am concerned that this could cause a fire if the problem is electrical in nature, (both taillight bulbs have recently burnt out or shorted out & been replaced). I am very concerned that this could cause a serious accident.
