general problems of the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu - part 1

I was driving about 65 mph when my car displayed a warning on the dash that the power is reduced and the traction control and engine light came on simultaneously. The speed reduced to 20 and would not accelerate. Pulled off the highway and shut off the car. I restarted it after a minute and the traction light went off but the check engine light remained on. The car then drove at normal speed the rest of the way home. This is terrifying as I didn't have a shoulder to pull off and had to pull in someones driveway. Luckily nobody plowed into me. I am now afraid to drive my car anywhere.

While driving my car started to say driving assistance off please drive with care then it acts like it's going to turn off. Now its sying.

Car won't start and then get a message saying stabilitrak. Car has under 60,000 miles on it.

Driving and my car wouldn't stop because my stablitrak and abs system malfunction and now the dealer is saying I need a vacuum pump and throttle change. This is a know issues in the gm cars just seen on google that a global letter was sent out Aug of 2019 about this issues but I never received it. These cars should be recalled and we should be given our money back. I have 2017 chevy Malibu and I feel this premeditated murder because they know it's a issue and I could have lost my life July 30 2020 at 959pm.

Everytime I stop at a red light or brake the vehicle(when coming to a stop in traffic)the car completely cuts off. The alert steering assist is reduced, drive with care constantly comes on whenever there is an auto stop and the car restarts. The radio and air would also turn off when auto stop is activated. This turn off also causes the radio screen to go black for a short time until it restarts. Which is a big problem and dangerous when driving in traffic. The normal auto stop would be somewhat silent, but when it turns back on now it hisses and turns back on. I also hear something as if water is passing through pipes after and/or during auto stop sometimes. Lastly, last night(7/8/20)I attempted to turn on my car and back out of my driveway. The car turned on but the check engine light came on. It did not allow me to shift into any gears or accelerate. I noticed the lights that illuminate,d,r,l,etc. Was not illuminating at that time when I attempted to shift gears. I then turned the car off but it stated shift to park. Note the car was in park. After I let it sit in park for a while I tried restarting the car and it restarted. The car shifted in to gears and accelerated. Note: the car allowed me to move the shift in and out of gears but it was not catching. The stopping issue wit the steering reduced alert started about two weeks ago(around June 25,2020). Hearing the water sound began around the the beginning of March 2020. Lastly the shifting issue began last night,7/8/20. When driving on the highway I do the speed limit 60-70 mph. On the city streets I drive the speed limit ranging 25mph-40 mph.

While driving 60mph on the highway, my car began beeping and displayed �reduced engine power� on the screen. The traction light and engine light also came on. The cars speed was immediately reduced almost causing a serious accident as I was in the left lane on the highway with a semi behind and beside me. I was able to maneuver to the shoulder. I had to restart the car twice in order to be able drive it home. This was an absolutely terrifying situation. The check engine light is still on. Upon googling this issue, many people have had this problem and there has not been a recall! if my reaction time wasn't a fast as it was today, I would have been seriously hurt, or worse. Gm needs to address this.

Several times in the past month or so my car has displayed a warning that says engine power reduced, and even if you're going highway speed, will reduce your speed down to around 20 mph. The first time it happened, it was around 6pm in busy traffic on the highway, almost causing me to wreck. It stopped happening for a while, but now it has done it over 20 times in the past 48 hours. It only happens when your vehicle is in motion.

Lately when I stop at a light or intersection my vehicle auto stops but when I try to go the vehicle shuts off and will not start. I have to put on my flashers while in traffic and shut the vehicle on and off until it restarts. One of the warnings read stabil and another reads power shut off as well as battery saver active. I have taken it in but have been told they do not know what is wrong so they reset the system however, this dangerous issue remains. This started the beginning of March and has continued.

Vehicle stability track disabled and steering get stiff and hard to control. This is a known issue with this vehicle and 1000's of people have reported it. Dealer want to char $2,700 to fix for an issue that was reported as a dangerous and known to the manufacturer. The warning come on interment and makes it impossible to control specially at high speed. All other safety features such as accident warning or lane departure gets disabled.

Well I'm driving in the freeway and the car star lossing power I almost crash then the check engine light turn on and it's say something about the stability somentihin like that and that I have to be becarfull driving.

Reduced engine power first time this happened I was making a u turn at slow speeds when my dash displayed � reduced engine power� check engine light came on as well as traction control light . I pulled over turned my car off and back on a few mins later later lights went away and car drove fine . ( November 2019 ) second time was mid February 2020 I was driving about 40 mph when same thing happened . Dash lights came on reduced engine power came back on and car slowed down to less the 20 mph within seconds . Once again I had to pull over turned my car on/off about 3 times in 20 mins for light to go away and car drive normal again . Third time today 2/27/20 at maybe 10 mph my dash lit up once again check engine light did not go away this time . But car drove fine afterwords luckily it hasn't happened on highway speeds or with my daughter in the car . All this in the last 3 months I bought my car with 20 miles June 1st 2017 and currently has 38k miles . This definitely has to be fixed before it causes serious accidents !.

Reduced engine power started popping up on the dashboard and forcefully reduces speed to 20mph. Hundreds of chevy owners are reporting this abnormalities recently and Chevrolet is concealing this manufacture defect.

While trying to accelerate down the on-ramp onto a highway all of a sudden I lost power and could not exceed 40mph. I almost got sideswiped while trying to merge into traffic but couldn't gain speed. Before abruptly pulling onto the shoulder the anti-skid and check engine lights came on along with a dash warning that stated :"engine power reduced". I took it to a vendor who searched the code my car produced and it was "p2138", which is "throttle/pedal position sensor/ switch d/ e voltage correlation". I searched this issue online to find a ton of similar if not the exact same issues with other chevy Malibus. This is a very dangerous issue! I could have been seriously injured or killed.

For 3 months my 2017 chevy Malibu has had the check engine light come on, and vehicle completely loose acceleration. At slow and high speeds with my 2 year old in the car. When the code is read it states it's the ecm p2138. This last time almost caused my vehicle to wreck with my family in the car. Chevy has yet to handle the issue and like most cars it's not covered on warranty so because chevy has put out a faulty product we are being punished with high mechanical costs. This is not the first issue, I have have my chevy almost 3 years and have had it in for sensor issues reading the key fob and my car stranding me hours from home and not starting, and again for sensory issues putting the vehicle into park. When confronting chevy they state the issue with high cost to fix.

As I was driving on the interstate my check engine and traction control lights flashed on. All of a sudden the engine power down light lit up and I couldn't go above 30 mph. This has happened twice in the last week. Very scary when you are driving 60-70 mph on the interstate.

The car will not start sometimes. Yesterday the lights and radio came on randomly while sitting in the garage with the fob in the house. Randomly shuts down while driving. The last time it was half way through an busy intersection. Had to push the car off the road.

I was leaving work and got 5 minutes into my drive and I had a warning light come on in my Malibu while I was in motion driving straight in town. It indicated "electric steering issues" it was on for no more than 5-10 seconds then it turned off automatically. Allthough this warning went away, I did not feel safe so I pulled over and started doing some research on my Malibu. I did not find anything that made me feel unsafe to finish my drive home, but I do want to raise attention to this so it can be looked into so this doesnt happen to other people.

Engine power reduced. Engine power reduced. At first it seemed to happen when it was raining, but on dry days no problems. The engine light comes on, and disappears a few hours later. The dealership acts as if they can't tell you anything once the warning and engine light turn off. Lately it's been happening more frequently, so I was finally able to get it read. Error codes p2138 and p2127, both referencing throttle/pedal position sensor. Seems to be the only complaint I see on here. I also have read about law suits being filed regarding this as well.

Within 1 year I bought brand new hybrid Malibu car from chevy dealer, I had experienced dead 12v battery. Dealer replaced the battery which I paid even though I thought it should be within warranty. Last night I experienced 3rd dead battery again after I parked the car for 7 hrs office work. The 2nd time dead battery occured was last June 2019 only, dealer also replaced the battry. Its a 3rd time that I experience dead battery (stationary/parked) for brand new car 2017 hybrid Malibu within 2 years. Obviously its not the battery issue but its design of electrical system. Before and during the battery issue, I got stabilitrak light on and steering assist in reduced alarm as well. I just want to vent my frustation with this brand new car. Hope other car owners will benefit from this info. For 10 years I never had battry issue on my previous car. Thanks.

I was driving my vehicle in heavy traffic and I came to a traffic light and my vehicle shut down and would not start back. It was frightening because someone could have hit me from behind. After the officer jump my car off it crank back up but I took it to the shop and place on the machine and the battery and alternator is fine. The car since then have shut down 4 more times and after sitting for a while it started back up. Once again this happened in heavy traffic. Please check if others having the same problem. Also a few times the doors came unlock at a stop light or stopping of the vehicle. Please help. 2017 Malibu ez.

My car will randomly go into engine reduced power mode causing my car to drop from whatever speed I'm at to 30-40mph, almost causing an accident. It's happened on multiple occasions.

During the cold the car will not turn on, will show a stabilitrak problem and the transmission light turns on. When it is on and you drive it, it will automatically turn off and stay off at a red light or whenever you press the brake. I have two other friends who own the same car and it does the same , which makes me assume a manufacturer problem of cars not turning on in the cold/ sensor issue.

The electrical blinks out . Engine reduced speed is a problem and is very damgerous I was almost hit on the freeway. This car is a dud and most models like it have the same problem.

While driving my 2017 Chevrolet Malibu on the highway with my son in the car, the driver screen dash flashed a message �engine power reduced�, the check engine light turned on, and the car immediately lost power making it difficult to drive safely. After this happened, my car would not exceed 45 mph and would not shift. After pulling my car to the side of the busy highway and letting it set, I was able to get my car towed to my home. This has since happened five additional times and is happening at a more rapid rate. I took my car the oreilleys and autozone to have them run a general diagnostic check and the error code being returned was �p2138� - �throttle/pedal position sensor/switch d / e voltage correlation�. I then set up an appointment with the Chevrolet dealership, where technicians also ran a more thorough diagnostic test and found my car needed a new accelerator pedal position sensor. This part is not functioning as it is supposed to and at the very least is an extreme safety hazard.

At less than 32k miles I"ve had issue with the shift to park indicator, the radio random on and off regardless if car is running or parked and off and now multiple indicators for an emission issue car will suddenly loose power or stop. I have taken care for service on regular basis and have had service repairs done twice to supposedly fix computer board. Unfortunately, service either says they have rest it or can't find issues I describe. I will park the car and let gm have it before I get killed in traffic!!!!.

While driving on a city street approaching a roundabout the engine warning light came on, the car reduced it's engine power, and the traction control sensor came on.

Car indicating to place in park after placing the shifter into park and shutting down the car this happens weekly at least I was coming to a stop at a light and the car just completely shut off no power dash flashed a few times I put it in park, then I pushed the button to start it didnt start. Im stuck at stoplight on busy street during morning traffic. Second time this has happened.

Car stalls while operating, car shuts down while driving and fails to reboot without warning. I experience this problem several time within the last month. Car will also shut down when the vehicle is not in motion ie stop signs, traffic lights, stop & go traffic. . . Etc. Most recent issue vehicle prompt "steering assist is reduced drive with care" or servic stablitrak.

My brake boosters went out and I paid $700 now something odd is happening to my brakes with the air or pressure. Should this whole car be recalled? my electrics blinked out the day I got the car and the salesman said � it happens sometimes now I have to replace a battery for$290 on a car I have less than 2 years?? it was mentioned the auto start affects my battery!! I need to speak to someone about reimbursement and covering my battery. Let's take auto start off totally it's a nuisance not a solution and the tow truck driver said he has taken in 4 GMC/Chevrolet this week and 2 were Malibu�s. My car is at the dealers right now!.

A �shift to park� displays when I am already on park when I try to turn off the car. So I am unable to turn off the car properly due to this. I took the car for a diagnostics at my local chevy dealer and the advisor told me that it's a manufacturer defect with the shift control.

The volt shift to park issue. Does not recognize park (if it is in park??) to turn the vehicle off, which would make it a safety issue.

In August of 2019 my car wouldn't shift out of park. I had to have my car towed to a local Chevrolet dealership at night where it was there for a week this visit was for the gear shift to be replaced. October 2019 my car start stop feature made my car shut off in the middle of rush hour morning traffic this trip was said to be the charging system and the battery. In January 2020 I started to have the same issue with the car just stopping this time it was the electrical module I also had the oil changed and a all wheel alignment and I picked up my car and 10 days later my engine light came on so back to the chevy dealership 2 days they say we fixed it. 48 hours later the engine light is back on. I was told that we just cleared the engine light in hope's that would just fix the problem so now 2 and half weeks later they still have my car. They have no clue of what's happening.

After putting the vehicle in park, and the vehicle is stationary, the p on the shifter lights up that it is in park, the screen reads that is is in park, and the car is parked and not moving. After pressing the engine button to turn the car off, a warning pops up on the screen saying �shift to park!� even though the car is in park. It takes many tries and a lot of time to finally get the car to turn off.

Car shuts off completely while driving-the car goes dead DE-energized completely. All controls would not work just locked up on me. I had to have the unit towed twice, we switched the battery in the key fob and the car ended up starting, however 2 weeks later it died again while driving, I nearly had an accident again!! 3 times the car has been in motion going straight and completely shuts down. The dealership was not able to find anything with their diagnostic testing!! this has to be some sort of mal-function or recall regarding this issue.

Warning message says 'shift into park' & even though engine shuts off, the radio (& I'm assuming battery) doesn't. Car won't lock because of it. Has required turning car back on & off as many as 8 times, and/or moving forward or backwards numerous times. Chevy dealer's service advisor told me "yeah, we've had lots of problems with that. We usually have to replace the shifter control box".
