My car has the engine 3. 1 l automatic. On January 4, I was going to go run errands so I went out to my car and cranked it to start the engine but instead, I heard a loud explosion, causing the front tires of the car to go up in the air and then land back on the ground. Smoke started coming out from the hood and a fire almost got started. I was scared to half to death causing me to almost have a heart attack. Morning inspection, I found that the intake manifold had exploded on the car and pieces of it were all over the engine. I feel that the pressure regulator may have been the culprit, but the plastic upper intake just literally blew up. Nobody was injured neighbors came out to see what the explosion had been, the window on my windshield cracked and major damage has been done to the plenum. I have pictures but I’ve been unable to upload them but they are available. If you need them I went to mission Chevrolet where I purchased the car but was referred to contact you in general. No recalls sent over this issue, but have I been driving when the explosion occurred it may have caused fatalities to myself, and perhaps other drivers on the freeway.

Started car and heard a loud boom and then smoke under the hood and intake cover and harness on fire.
We bought the 2000 chevy Monte Carlo ss VIN 2g1wx12k9y9171978 back in June 2019 we have done some regular repairs on it when we first got it and everything worked great! started every single time. 02/18/2020 we went to start it and it was acting like the battery was dead. Went and check the battery volt read and it was reading at 8 so I hooked up jumper cable to it and let it sit for a couple minutes. Got in a turned the key over to start it. The whole plastic intake blew up and pieces went everywhere. Then caught fire. It was so bad very scary. The damage was little compared of what it could have been if the hood was closed.
I purchased a 2001 chevy Monte Carlo ss in 9-01. I did not realize until recently the engine was built 2000. I would not have purchased. My car has had multiple problems. The recent occurred July 20th 2019. My odometer is 117,166 original miles. The intake manifolds and upper intake manifold is all made of a plastic. I went to start my car which has been running fine. Around 6-7:00 pm I heard a loud boom. It startled me and my nieghbors even came out. I noticed smoke coming from the front drivers side. I popped the hood and flames were shooting straight up the firewall onto the inside hood. I immediately screamed get me water and noticed the fire extinguisher. I smashed the glass grabbed it and began to put out the fire. Remind you the car has a cover I was using both hands removed the oil cap pulled the cover and still spraying I put the cover out and continued with the engine placing the oil cap to prevent cross contamination. I was able to put out the fire I had cuts to my hand and it singed the hair on my arms and my wrist had a slight burn. However, I have know idea how I was over looked on the 5-17-04 fuel pressure regulator recall part #03064b my car is a 3. 8 litre k series. If I would have had my granddaughter she is in a car seat the damage would have been much worse. The flames were so high they almost reached the tree branch. The scary part is gmac is aware of the possible fire and is trying to settle with me for minimal amount. I just spent thousands because the car hit 100,000 so new radiator, tune up etc. This was a very expensive purchase and to think I have been driving a time bomb. Luckily I wasn't in traffic or in a place where I had to pull my granddaughter out and the car seat because the entire car would have burned. I honestly thought it was going to blow up. I can actually shove my fist in that upper intake manifold. See complaint odi112351110.

Cecking the fuses, none of them were blown. Gauge would be reading hot temperature, would check the hoses and radiator nothing. Fuel system is down now.
The car's fuel gage stopped working. The car wouldn't turn over when I started it so I got a new battery since it said my old one was bad, but it's still not working. The security light is on and I don't understand why and if this is affecting it from turning on.

Engine was cold and in cold weather. 3 foot flames, minor burns and injuries sustained er visit for smoke inhalation while extinguishing fire. Vehicle was parked on private property. A neighbor's car the same make and model similar year did the same thing a few weeks ago.

My car has a strong gas odor particularly in colder weather. I noticed it last winter and it went away during the summer. Now that the temps are getting cooler, it has started again. I turn on the heat and have to drive with the windows down for ventilation. I've had three different mechanic shops check it out. None have been able to find the cause. It is embarrassing in the school car rider line or in a drive through. Someone always comments on it. I am worried it may catch fire.
Problem 1: driving near my home and vehicle quit on me. Gas gauge showed full but come to find out, I was out of gas. Good thing I wasn't traveling at a high rate of speed, like interstate driving. Problem 2: vehicle wouldn't start, I'm being told it is the passlock system. Security light has only come on 1 time. I never know when its going to start. Very worried when I travel by myself. These have happened at different times.
I was driving at highway speeds and the temp gauge droppef to zero, air conditioning stopped working, and car began to struggle. I pulled the car off the highway to see if was dumping coolant put. Took the vehicle to the shop and he new what was wrong because a lot of these cars come in with the problem. I had to have the timing cover replaced and the ect sensor. The mechanic said this happens often as gm cars have these issues. Was also told it looked as if the car overheated and was lucky it didn't blow up on the highway and cause an accident.
The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. While attempting to start the vehicle, the contact heard an exploding noise coming from the engine compartment. Upon further inspection, the contact noticed smoke and realized that the intake manifold had exploded. There were no injuries and a police report was not filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the intake manifold and fuel pressure regulator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 98,000.
In the morning when starting the car it sputters like it's gasping for gas. . . I turn key off then restart and the engine starts normally.

Tl- the contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The contact stated that there had been strong fumes of fuel and oil out side of the vehicle and on the inside of the vehicle which was progressing. The contact later received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 15v701000 (engine and engine cooling) and the dealer was unable to determine when the parts and permanent remedy would become available to repair the vehicle within a reasonable time frame. The vehicle was not inspected and diagnosed as the contact continued to experience the condition. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and was unable to determine a specific date that the vehicle would receive the part to the dealer. The approximate failure mileage was not available. On September 24, 2015, my wife was driving our Monte Carlo. Unbeknown to her the car began smoking underneath, causing loss of control with neither steering nor braking capability. Other drivers, noticing the smoke, were attempting to notify her of the impending fire. She was able to drive about another mile before losing control and crashing into a tree on my neighbor's yard. The car became completely engulfed in flames and was destroyed. Were it not for several good samaritans, and police and fire personnel, she would have been killed. The following is a history of issues with this car, documented fully by service records from its purchase in 1998. 1. Brake lights working intermittently or not at all. 2. Turn signal failure. 3. Unable to start due to short in electrical system. 4. Wheel hub assembly replaced. 5. Power steering pump replaced. 6. Rear suspension (passenger's side) broken. 7. Premature alternator failure. 8. Premature brake replacement, I. E. , pads, calipers, rotors. 9. Total brake failure from hard braking (incident not connected with fire) 10. Intake manifold gasket replaced due to coolant flowing into cylinders and crankcase. 11. Premature radiator replacement. 12. Electrical spike distributed through system when starting, causing full-scale deflection of instrumentation and lights to become extremely bright.

I got into the vehicle to go to church Sunday with my mother-in-law. I turned the key in the ignition and there was an explosion from under the hood that made the hood jump and some smoke came out of the sides. It scared my mother-in-law half to death. Our company mechanic checked the engine and determined the intake had exploded. He checked on-line as to a probable cause and discovered there was a recall on various pontiac, Buick and chevy vehicles with 3. 8l engines due to intake explosions due to faulty fuel pressure regulators. In some cases it seems to have bent a fuel rail and pulled an injector out of the head, which it looks to have done to mine also. He towed the vehicle to the dealership and they told him there were 3 recalls listed for this car and that was not one of them. One of the listed recalls was for the ignition which we took it in for and it still sticks. Our mechanic checked your web-site and did find recalls for this explosion problem. Some of the statements people posted about this happening resulted in fires as well as the explosion so this seems to be a significant hazard. Why is our car not listed with the dealer for this recall ? though it is titled as a 2001 it was manufactured in 09/00 so seems it should be included in the recall, especially since it did the exact same thing as the others. They want over $700 to fix the intake, regulator and gasket and I should not be liable for what is apparently a manufacturers defect, and that's if it didn't cause more damage when it exploded.
I went to start my car and it backfired and blew apart the intake manifold into pieces.
During the process of starting the vehicle: first attempt to start the vehicle, it didn't start. The second attempt to start the vehicle, there was a loud bang (explosion) under the hood with an odor of 'burnt plastic'. Upon looking at the engine, the black plastic intake maniford had a hole it from the explosion. This is the second occurance in 3 months. I have replaced this intake this past winter and this occured again last weekend. It seems in my research that gm is ignoring this defect and will not offer a fix to the problem. Gm knows this is happening especially with "cold starts" but has yet addressed.
After I contacted the dealer, the appointment was made to repair all recall issues. Received notification that all parts were at the dealership. Once I arrived at the dealer, was told it would be a three hour wait. Drove approx. 100 miles to dealer (bill gatton Chevrolet-Cadillac). One recall issue was resolved, resulting in another appointment to be made when other parts arrived. No precautions were made to ensure vehicle protected against service department injury to vehicle, ie, no paper mats placed in car, dirt inside car, and keys left in the vehicle on the dealer lot. This vehicle has been maintained in a pristine condition, (51,000 actual miles). Has never been driven on salt or under any bad weather conditions. The dealer even commented that the vehicle appeared to be brand new. I would welcome a customer satisfaction survey for this dealership.
The fuel pressure regulator in the engine compartment developed a severe leak. The leak caused fuel to be released in large quantities directly into the upper intake manifold and out the throttle body. Fuel continued to flow out into the air cleaner housing and eventually the engine compartment and onto the ground. Several gallons of fuel were discharged in this fashion. The vehicle was running poorly but gave no indication that there was a leak until the air clean was opened. The part that failed was a standard motor products part number pr216t purchased from rockauto. Com on 5/15/2013 and installed shortly thereafter. Vehicle mileage at installation was approximately 131000. The part failed on 10/20/2014 at vehicle mileage148243 miles. The part was installed to correct a similar situation involving a much less severe leak in an older part. The fuel leakage with the older part did not escape the upper intake manifold. Age and origin of the older part are not known. The older part may have been original to the vehicle. Given the significant quantity of fuel discharged and the repeated nature of the failure, I feel an investigation is warranted.

Intermittent failure of the Chevrolet passlock system. The engine starts, but dies in one or two seconds and the "security" light begins flashing - or the engine may not start at all. If I wait 10 to 30 mintues after the first attempt, I can usually get the car restarted but if you do a search online for gm passlock, you'll find numerous websites reporting this issue and suggesting that it may eventually get so bad that the car will not start again. The general motors passlock system is supposed to protect yoru car from theft by preventing the fuel system from engaging, however; this malfunction is happening to owners all across the united states of America.
I have a 2002 chevy Monte Carlo ss and I am having electrical issues the windshield wipers don't always function properly neither do the turning signals my seats will move on there own ,there is a ticking noise coming from the doors once keys are taken out of the ignition also I have a problem when pumping gas into the car the pump keeps shutting off unless I hold it at a certain angle.
On 1-6-14 my car set fire due to a recall. I calle dthe gm recall center the same day and was told told to have the car towed to the kevin whitaker dealer which I did on 1-11-14. Forom 1-11-14 to 1-20-14 I did not hear back from the dealer so I called and was told that all the info was sent to gm legal department. Called back on 1-27-14 and was told they are trying to decide what to do. Calle back on 2-4-14 still no answer. 2-5-14 nothing. Called back on 2-6-14 and was to to call the the product allegation dept with info. I called the allegation dept and per dora nothing was in the system and she needed to start a claim. Called chevy on 1-7-14 still nothing back but the said gm had the info. 1-10-14 spoke to moreen and dora and they will call chevy to get all the info. On 2-12-14 yvette young with gm legal department called stating that due to the warranty the can not help me with the car catching on fire even though it was due to a recall. My car have been at the chevy dealer and since 1-11-14 and now they are telling me every day that they are trying to help me with a car. Something about a customer loyalty certificate and that has been since 2-22-14. It is 3-5-14 and I didnt get any help with assisting me with a car I had nothing to do with catching on fire. Went to start car one day. Turned key and heard loud pop. Rushed to lift good and top of motor on fire. Luckily had extinguisher right inside garage door and immediately extinguished. Plastic intake cover was blown apart in multiple pieces. After searching on the internet I found there have been many of this same incident, somewhere claiming that it comes from a faulty fuel shit of valve our something. If you notice with low miles, this car is barely driven and always babied.
The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The contact stated that the manifold exploded as he tried to start the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure was the second occurrence. The contact called the manufacturer and inquired about NHTSA campaign id number: 040v090000 (fuel system: gasoline) and was told that the vehicle was not included in the recall campaign. The manufacturer was contacted but provided no assistance. The failure and current mileage was 130,000.
Vehicle was having starting issues. Would not start without a jump start. We jumped the car with jumper cables, and the engine caught on fire. Immediatley hosed it down to put out the fire, and now there is a hole in the top of the engine. After extensive research, found out a recall back in 09 that was causing this same exact issue. Found several people with the same year make and model vehicle, that this same exact situation happend to, and it was due to the recall. In 2010 stockton Chevrolet replaced sparkplug retainers on a recall issue, which was linked to the same recall. Now trying to fight gm dealer to have vehicle fixed, as it seems to be linked to the recall even though the sparkplug retainers were replaced. Could be a possible product liability issue.
I was driving and my gas needle started going up and down. Now it don't work . If I put $5 of gas in it go to full.
The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed fuel leaking onto the ground. There was a recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 04v090000 (fuel system, gasoline: delivery); however the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 117,100.
I started the car up and I heard a pop and saw a blue flame. After repairing the car costing $3240. 74 it once again caught another fire please help.
I began having trouble with this car a few months after I purchased it. I can't drive the car at night with the lights on bright, because when I do the lights shut completely off and the only way to get them to come back on is to flip the dimmer switch. I have been on the interstate and highway both, driving the posted speed limit when this has happened. This problem, in my opinion is a big hazard and very unsafe. I had to have the cruise control switch replaced, the instrument panel replaced, because it failed completely while I was going on vacation, I had no idea how much gas was in my car or what speed I was going all gauges were out of whack. The car smells like gasoline, I've taken this to the dealer auto repair shop, they claim they can't find the problem, even though they could smell the gas both on the outside and inside of car. There was a recall on the key, I took into dealer and they put a cover over the old key, I personally don't understand how that was supposed to take care of whatever the problem was. I have noticed that others on here have listed similar complaints about this car. What I'd like to know is, if there are so many people having the exact same problems with these cars, why hasn't there been a recall issued? I can't speak for anyone else, but I paid hard earned money for this car and I'm sick and tired of having to constantly repair stuff, which seems to be a big problem on this make and model. I think something needs to be done before someone gets seriously injured or worse. And it shouldn't take someone's life before something is done about this.
