37 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2012

I live in a section of town where there are numerous, steep hills. On the way home, I began braking to keep below the 35mph speed limit, and the brakes went way further down than normal, but the truck slowed down. Since I was very close to home, I kept going on my way very slowly. I downshifted all the way down to first gear the next time I needed to brake (at my house), this time the brake went all the way to the floor and finally stopped when I was standing on the brake pedal with both feet. Upon looking under the rear of the car, I discovered the rusty brake line that had ruptured, and several other brake lines and fuel lines that were very rusty as well. Truck remains parked for now, to replace the broken line, (the one that runs from the abs/proportioner to the rear brakes) and the other rusty brake lines as well as the rusty fuel lines.

43 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 11/12/2011

2001 Silverado 1500 4wd ext. Cab short bed. Original owner purchased new in 2001. Just so happens that I experienced my brake failure during a return trip after purchasing a used lawn tractor that I was bringing back home on my 6x10 single axle trailer. I was approaching the off ramp to my exit off of major highway traveling at approximately 60 mph. Along with other vehicles taking exit also I started to brake to go into exit and suddenly with no warning the brake pedal immediately went to the floor and I started heading to collide with the vehicle in front of me that was slowing down into the turn. I luckily was able to swerve back onto the shoulder of the highway without collision to any vehicle and then press down on emergency brake to come to a slow stop. I must mention also that I had my 9 year old son with me who was oblivious to everything going on until I explained what just happened. I had to call my wife to come so that I could unhook trailer from my truck and hook back up to her 2003 GMC yukon. After gathering myself and pondering the situation I then proceeded to drive my truck home downshifting the auto trans to slow myself and using emergency brake to come to a complete stop and sit for redlights. After getting home I crawled under truck to determine where my failure occured and noticed a large wet spot right under the drivers side front door where all 4 brake lines run alongside the wiring harnesses. There is also a large black plastic clip at this location that holds the 4 brake lines. This area is immediately behind the front tire which in my opinion takes a large amount of splash up from the tire. I must mention that at no time did any warning light come on and has not come on yet. I had no brakes. . . Unlike the theory that I should have had brakes on the other circuit of the the brake system. I have not fixed truck yet due to cost of repair.

The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the brake lines, rotors, and brake pads needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 53,000. 46 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2011

I applied brakes going down hill when all of a sudden the pedal went all the way to the floor causing my vehicle to be very unresponsive to braking almost causing me to crash. I was able to stop the truck after a lengthy time. I would not have been able to stop up any conditions if needed to do so if there wasn't a long area of road to gradually stop like I had. I'm really concerned because this truck was garaged most of its life and is very low mileage(45k). It has no rust on body, only on the brake lines and I believe the fuel lines.

47 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2011

Driving on rt 280 in NJ. Traffic was merging to one lane, got cut off by merging car, hit brakes hard, pedal went to floor, was able to stop by flooring pedal, downshifting and using rumble strip. Brake lines under truck are completely rusted, it appears to have failed in more than one spot.

48 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2011

I lost my brakes completely, luckily I suspected a brake line leakage due to the brake fluid needing to be refilled prior to my trip. There was confusion amongst drivers ahead of me merging onto the highway, everyone got hard on their brakes including me. My abs kicked on and immediately the line ruptured, I saw a mist of brake fluid in the drivers side mirror and my brake pedal dropped to the floor rendering my brakes useless. I missed rear ending the person in front of me by inches. My truck is currently in the shop getting all of the brake lines replaced due to the fact that they are all rusted from front to back and deemed unsafe.

49 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2011

50 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2011

On July 30th, 2011 at about 22:00 hrs, I was operating my 2001 Chevrolet silverado on interstate 476 in the philadelphia metro area and initially it was functioning properly. Without warning a catastrophic brake line rupture occurred. I inspected the steel lines and they are all corroded to an alarming degree and must be replaced. The truck has 70,000 miles and after use during the same trip with no problems when the brake pedal sunk to the floor. To safely stop I had to down shift to a lower gear, and use the emergency brake and shift again to neutral to stop safely.

51 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 07/07/2011

I was approaching a stop sign at about 45 mph I applied the brakes to slow down and there was nothing, I hit the emergency brake and realized they never worked. Luckily, I could slow down and put it in low range until it stopped. Further investigation showed a rupture in the rear brake line due to corrosion. Dealer replaced line (shabby job) at a huge cost. I feel these lines should have lasted longer that this, I noticed the lines at the front splitter are also severely corroded, I am afraid to put my grandkids in this truck. I have always owned chevy's but maybe its time for a change. All I ask is this problem be corrected. Thank you.

55 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2010

Metal brake line failure due to corrosion with massive loss of fluid. Experienced loss of brakes at low speed, and used the emergency brake to stop. Had line replaced. In August 2012 I expercienced a second failure, again due to metal brake line corrosion but on differenct line, again with massive loss of fluid and loss of brakes, luckily at low speed again. If this had happended at high speed or with a less experienced driver, it could have resulted in serious property damage and injury or fatality. This truck is located in va and other than the brake lines has little underside corrosion. I am having to replace all the brake lines at high cost to ensure safety. These brake line failures are noted all over the internet on late 90's to early 2000's chevy trucks- they seem to be very common. I have vehicles that are decades old and have their original brake lines. I suspect defective brake line materials on the truck.

56 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2010

Loss of brakes due to brake line corrosion, rust out. A deer ran into the highway, hit brakes to stop and brake pedal went to floor. Hit deer and did major damage to front of truck. After inspection, all brake lines need replaced. Unsafe to drive. This can cause a major accident, injury or even death.

57 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2010

Brake lines on my 2001 Chevrolet silverado have deteriorated to the point where the brake lines will not pass the yearly vehicle inspection. The corrosion rate of these brake lines are significantly greater than should be expected for the age of the vehicle. I would like have this instance added to the ongoing investigation into this safety issue.

58 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2010

The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that the front and rear brakes were rusted from the brake line to the abs control unit. 59 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2010

With no warning the brake lines failed - and the truck hit a tree, good news was that I was in the driveway. The entire frame is rotted and my mechanic has advised me not to drive the truck any more. It currently has 80,000 miles and the body and interior are perfect - I expected to maintain this truck and keep it fore many more years, bought it in 03 with aprox 35,000 on it. It is unsafe in my opinion - this shouldn't happen with 80k mileage - I have replaced fuel line, gas fill hose, brake lines, rear bumper and much much more. Is there any recourse with Chevrolet for us poor owners of these vehicles?.

60 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Brake lines failed on my 2001 chevy silverado. My son was driving, but was able to stop ok with the brake pedal to the floor. I had to have all the brake lines replaced as they were rusted too badly to repair. This cost me a lot of money and thankfully no one was injured.

62 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2009

Sudden and near total lose of brakes. The Chevrolet dealer reported that the brake lines had rusted out and ruptured. All brake lines had to be replaced. If this had occurred at highway speeds in an emergency situation there could have been a very serious accident.

63 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/29/2009

At the end of September 2008 I lost the use of my brakes on my 2001 Chevrolet silverado. Fortunately it happened in my driveway. I noticed a puddle of fluid on the driveway under the driver side door, upon inspection the brake line was all rusted and full of holes. I had to have the truck towed and the brake lines replaced to the tune of $600. 21 on October 1. I saw in today's newspaper an investigation was being conducted into this problem. 66 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2007

Lost brakes at a low speed due to brake line corrosion. Will need to replace all other brake lines as they are heavily corroded as well. Then, just today I tried to apply my parking brake and something broke. The pedal went all the way to the floor. Brake cable broke and parking brakes remain on. Will have to have vehicle towed for repair once again. I believe that it would be prudent to take a look at this forum as I have found that many, many people are having issues with Chevrolet brakes. . Read more...

67 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

2nd owner of 2001 chevy silv 1500 - badly rusting undercarriage, rusted fuel tank hanger, rusted body/bed mounts, rusted off brake lines (had to be replaced $2k). Gm should perform recall for late model gm trucks 1999 thru 2005 for rust problems and replace all brake lines/fitting, etc. With stainless steel lines.

68 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2001

My truck has an automatic transmission and, since I purchasing it new in July, 2001, I rarely use the parking brake. A few months after purchase, when parking on a hill, I first noticed that the parking brake did not work however, as I rarely used it I continued to rely on the transmission's "park" setting to keep the truck in place until long after the guarantee had expired. When I then looked into the possibility of whether there had been a recall on this issue I found that there had but it was only for cars with a standard transmission so I decided to continue living with this fault. Now, as I learn more and more about the tendency of the brake lines on this vehicle to rust through and fail it occurs to me that this is, in fact, an emergency brake as well as a parking brake. My truck now has 59,923 miles. I believe it, and others like it, should have been recalled years ago along with those standard transmission models. I would hope that this complaint would help further that action.
