My 2004 chevy silverado speedometer started reading wildly. With ignition off it might read 60mph, or 10mph. While driving it was wildly erratic and even maxed out at 120mpg while driving approx 45mph. I had 81,600 miles on the vehicle. Thus happened suddenly one day without warning while driving down the road. I almost had an accident at the sight of seeing my speedometer tell me I was doing 100mph when I was just driving slowly. It was a shocking experience.
I purchased a 2004 z-71 silverado on December 31, 2007 with 16,020 miles. In July of 2008 my gauge cluster started working intermittently, at first only the oil and fuel gauges stopped now my whole cluster has been rendered useless. The dealership is making excuses not to stand behind their product, even though it is a known issue that is common knowledge to almost everyone who owns a gm truck. They have told me that it is my ignition not the gauge cluster, even though everything else that is powered off ignition power works perfectly fine. Being a former mechanic I can tell when someone is informed about what they are telling me, these service consultants are not! it is very frustrating that Chevrolet is not taking responsibly for their defective engineering. I have been a gm guy ever since I can remember. I currently have two Chevrolets 1984 z-28 camaro that I built from the ground up and a 2004 z-71 silverado. After this experience my loyalty to gm will be seriously scared. I will not purchase another gm vehicle. Cameron mcmillian.
