Steering Column problems of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

The steering column rattles to the point you think it is coming undone, turning, driving straight, it doesn't matter. Very unsafe in our opinion in our company truck.

Steering column is bad definitely is a safety issue Chevrolet has no recall on this but wants to charge 300 to fix this why isn't it a recall I could lose control of the vehicle.

The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 hd. When driving in reverse or making left and right turns at various speeds, the steering wheel makes a loud crackling noise. The vehicle was taken to an auto garage. The failure was diagnosed as the lower steering column shaft and the column flex coupling, in which the mechanic replaced both. The manufacturer stated that they were aware of the failure; however, there was no recall. The failure mileage was 46,000 and current mileage was 61,804. Updated 06/25/08.

: the contact stated there was a rattling noise in the vehicle. The service dealer previously greased the intermediate steering shaft to resolve the issue. After the service, the rattling sound returned. After the second incident, the service dealer stated the steering shaft will need to be greased every 10000 miles to keep the rattling sound away. The contact expressed concern over long term damage to the steering shaft due to this problem.
