1 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2018

While driving the vehicle in town on a city street at approximately 35 mph, with the ac on and the blower in the high position, the blower started turning off intermittently. A smell of burning plastic was noted and the blower completely shut down. The compressor for the ac continued to cycle on and off. The other lower settings for the blower did not work either. It was found that the plug that goes to the resistor pack next to the blower had a badly-burned contact for the ground wire going to the blower. The plastic around the plug was melted and burned and the electrical connector was melted off. A serious fire could have potentially started under the dash due to the intense heat and arcing of the electrical contacts putting me and my family in danger. Doing research on the NHTSA website, this seems to be a common problem with 2005 Chevrolet silverado trucks. There should be a recall on this, but I do not find one.

2 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/22/2018

Driver side seat heater turns on by itself. This is a dangerous situation because the driver is distracted while driving and must look down to find the off switch. Often, the seat heat comes back on again almost right away. . This situation seemed to occur in approx 2003 to 2007 models. Internet forums show that gm has service bulletins that instruct technicians to do a 'firmware fix". The only way for me to stop this condition was to locate and disconnect a small green connector under the seat that disables the seat heater. Changing the control module didn't remedy the situation. It happens while driving and is intermittent. Seems like gm has remedied the situation in newer models. Seems to me they should be recalling older models to incorporate some sort of "fix". The distraction of locating and turning off the heater is as bad as "driving while texting". I always have to pull over to get it shut off. Often, when I resume driving, the heater will come back on. Eventually it stops turning itself on.

3 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2015

I purchased my 2005 Chevrolet 2500hd duramax in may of 2015. A week later I was pulled over for speeding 10 over. My truck showed I was driving 55 mph. I now have a speeding ticket $114. I contacted gm about the issue and they said my VIN# was not qualified for the recall and I would be paying out of pocket ($535 including labor). The part alone is $350. Now at the end of the day I will owe $649 because of gm's mistake. I love gm's products, however they do not stand up to there mistakes which will make me think again before buying one.

4 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2014

The truck was parked in driveway. Driven 20 minutes prior for 10 miles. Erupted into fla message under hood. Fire police unable to determine cause to badly damaged. Total loss.

5 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2014

I noticed this past weekend that my speedometer started to malfunction. . . . Along with the oil gauge, & battery gauge. They all were pegged out & not reading correctly. The tachometer seems to work still, but it is hesitant at times too. The speedometer had a issue a couple months ago, but it seemed to disappear until this past weekend. I would think there would be some type of recall on this after reading all the issues people have had in the past. Yes, this truck is 8 years old, but when I bought it it only had 22,000 miles. I have only had it about 10 months & only put 9,500 miles on it.

6 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2013

2005 chevy Silverado 2500 hd duramax, speedometer stuck on 23 mph. Known issue with faulty part, the instrument cluster stepper motor. Gm will not cover replacement. Faulty parts used from 2003-2007. Class action suit only covered certain VIN numbers and no recall was done. Safety issue/concern. Was informed by dealership that if we had brought it in 8 months earlier it would have been repaired at no cost. Never received notification of potential for this to happen. There should have been a recall. . .

7 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

Step motor on speedometer reading 20 mph high. Intermittent problem. Chevrolet is aware but only covers vehicles with less than 80000 miles very dangerous.

8 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2012

Heater controll module failure wires heat up and melt the sheilding and the connector ends.

9 Electrical System problem

The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 91,000.

10 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2011

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. While driving approximately 55 mph, the contact noticed the speedometer was registering an inaccurate reading. The failure occurred sporadically. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and authorized dealer whom both stated the speedometer would need to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. Currently the speedometer was inoperable. The manufacturer was notified and informed that the vehicle exceeded the service warranty. The approximate failure mileage was 58,000.

11 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2011

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 hd. The vehicle was parked when the contact noticed that the heater/ air conditioner fan motor wires were severely melted. The contact planned to take the vehicle for diagnostic testing and to be repaired. The contact had concerns of a potential fire. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000. The VIN was unavailable.

12 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2010

Speedometer does not show the right speed which the vehicle is traveling. At almost standstill speeds is shows 15 mph. At higher speeds the speedometer shows speeds that are much higher than those being driven by the vehicle. I cannot trust this gauge any longer. Will be contacting gm to request a fix. Car has only 25,000 miles.

13 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2010

Speedometer is failing to maintain accurate speed. It goes all over the scale and then back to zero.

14 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2010

At about 76,000 miles my 2005 chevy silverado started having speedometer issues. Then all of a sudden it was working fine for about another 7,000 miles. And now over 80,000 miles it is stuck at 120 mph. Gm has recalled 2003 & 2004 models with this same known issue and has used the same clusters for 2005, but does not have a recall.

15 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2010

2005 Silverado 2500 hd speedometer malfunction. Speedometer registers very high speeds (I. E. 80 mph), or no speed at all (I. E. 0 mph) regardless of what speed is actually being driven.

16 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2009

Heater harness caught fire in my 2005 chevy silverado.

17 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2009

Early speedometer failure on 2005 chevy silverado.

18 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2009

Speedometer gives false readings. This problem is so common with this model year (2005) chevy/GMC trucks people are selling repair components on ebay, yahoo and other spots on line. Instruction are shared online also. Some 2005s are being repaired by the manufacture depending on the VIN other not, yet they all have the same parts that are known to be bad. 2003 & 2004s have their warranty extended to 7 yrs. 70,000 mile to cover this problem. So far we're lucky no one has been hurt or killed.

19 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2009

The speedometer just went to 80 one day and stuck there sometimes it fixes it self then its breaks again and is right back to 80 miles and up.

20 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

Blower for heat/air works intermittently. Dealer said resistor has probably gone bad. I removed the resistor which was all rusted from water (resistor is located in the air supply chamber inside the passenger compartment) and replaced. Problem resurfaced 48 hours later. Returned to dealer who advised there is a service bulletin on this, it's a common problem because the wire harness/connector goes bad due to overheating. Gm has a part specific to repair the wire harness connector. Do not have old resistor, wire harness still attached. I have not replaced the wire harness yet as I am trying to get gm to replace. Gm is well aware of this design defect and electrical hazard.

21 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2009

Speedometer does not work properly.

22 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/28/2009

Speedometer on 2005 duramax Chevrolet hd pickup is not working. It is jumping up and down, and is not going past 50 mph.

23 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/22/2009

On January 23, 2009, the #7 injector harness shorted and had to be replaced. On March 21, 2009, the ses light came on and the truck sounded different running, but did not lose power. Diagnostics showed problems with the fuel injector module. On March 22, 2009, the ses light came on and the truck started running rough and lost engine power (just like it did on January 23). The truck had to be towed to the Chevrolet dealership again. This time the #2 fuel injector harness had shorted and had to be replaced. With both incidents, the fuel injector harnesses were replaced with a new harness that has a 90 degree plug and longer wires. This is not covered by warranty and costs $400+ to replace each one. Within 2 months and 2500 miles both the #2 and #7 fuel injector harnesses have shorted and had to be replaced.

24 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/23/2009

When I was driving down interstate the truck (2005 2500 hd diesel) suddenly started running rough and lost engine power. The ses light came on. I pulled to the shoulder and turned the truck off. When I restarted the truck the ses light stayed on, but the truck would run. It went about 2 more miles and did the same thing again. It had to be towed to the Chevrolet dealership. The #7 injector harness had shorted and had to be replaced.

25 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/21/2008

Speedometer worked intermittently for past year and now has quit completely. It registers 120+. Gm is replacing speedometers with this problem up to 70-80k miles I have 92,000 and have been told it is not covered, after searching the internet it seems that there is a class action lawsuit and multiple incidents of 2003-2005 gm vehicles with this problem.

26 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2008

Bad speedometer. Sticks.

27 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/24/2008

Speedometer will only go up and not down. It sticks upon shutdown, and will go down if I restart the vehicle 20 times before I leave.

28 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2008

Receive an intermittent "service brake system" with abs & park brake dash light illuminated, and the aural alarm sounds. When this happens the abs system is made inoperable. The error does not create a dtc code and is not stored on the vehicle computer. An independent shop and the local Chevrolet dealer could not identify the defective part be. Each replaced the speed sensor and abs computer (2 weeks apart). The independent shop was able to identify the 200 milli-second electrical fault but could not find the source. The independent shop updated the computer firmware. Since the error could not be recorded the dealer could not do anything else and gave up. The problem continues. If it is raining or it is warm spring day the error happens every couple of miles. It appears to be tied to the throttle and does not react to any other vehicle condition. It reacts at constant throttle when the foot is removed or reduced pressure on the throttle pedal.

29 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2008

We have a 2005 chevy silverado and the speedometer stopped working 3 months ago, mileage approx. 60,000 miles. We contacted dealer and was told we would have to pay to have it fixed since there was no recall. Now I get on line and read lots of complaints. Needless to say the way the economy is we don't have the money ourselves to pay for the repair, so now we drive it and hope we are going speed limit or under. I think that gm should repair this problem since there are alot of people having the same problem. What kind of company will ask us to help them with bailouts but won't fix the problems their vehicles have?.

30 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2008

Air conditioning blower resistor and harness burned wires at 14,000 miles and was replaced by authorized chevy mechanic. Replaced harness and resistor caught fire a 65,000 miles.

31 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2007

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500hd. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 mph over uneven pavement the steering column began to rattle. In addition, the odometer failed to operate. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the instrument cluster was replaced. The steering column shaft was placed on order. The vehicle will be repaired when the part becomes available. In 2006, the steering column shaft was replaced and the failure recently recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 8,000.

32 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2006

: the contact stated after parking the vehicle in the carport for two hours, it caught on fire without warning. The fire department was called and the fire was extinguished. There was property damage to the house and the vehicle was totaled. A report was taken with the fire department. The dealer was notified.

33 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2006

After entering vehicle which had been parked for 2 weeks a heavy brunt electrical fire order was present. At the same time a heavy smoke like haze was present. Upon through exam the fire wall blanket in the engine compartment was found melted in a roundish pattern. One month latter there is still a burning odor in the cab.
