After hitting a bump in the road the right rear leaf spring mounting bracket broke. After further investigation at a local chevy dealership it was discovered that the leaf spring itself was also cracked. Further investigation revealed the same to be true on the left side of the truck as well. It was also discovered that the right rear shock, where it attaches to the frame, was completely corroded off. It was while under the truck investigating the suspension issues that it was discovered that the entire brake line system was severely corroded. I felt fortunate that this was discovered before a catestrophic failure occured. It was also noticed that the entire under carriage/frame was severely corroded. When asked if this was normal, the chevy mechanic stated that they see this all the time on the gm trucks they service. Although this survey is for the brake lines I feel that the corrosion issues associated with the frame is just as severe an issue and should be investigated.
We brought our 2006 Chevrolet silverado with around 73,000 miles on it to a repair shop for a tune up and we were told the following: “the fuel lines are very rusted (starting to seep back by the tank area) the brake lines are very rusted, the truck will need rear brakes very soon, all brake hoses will need to be replaced, the bleeders on calipers are rusted out, the shimmy shock in the front end is blown apart, has a lot of play in the idler arm, front shocks rusted & leaking, rear shocks rusted, rear end cover rusted, the transfer case tail shaft is leaking, the frame is rusted & getting thin in spots, has at least three broken exhaust manifold studs we understand that brake pads and calipers are usual repairs and maintenance. However, the vehicle is only six years old and the truck should not be very rusted. We called Chevrolet and opened a case to review the rust issues. We brought the truck to a dealership as requested by Chevrolet for a visual inspection. Using document id #2758961, the technicians determined “no repair or consideration should be given for this concern - surface corrosion on unprotected components will vary with age and exposure. Corrosion on these components will vary with age and exposure. Corrosion on these components has no detrimental impacts, either in short or long term durability. " however, they explained that if they were us, they would replace the brake and fuel lines. The Chevrolet case worker called the dealer and confirmed the findings. He explained to us that the rust was due to environmental factors and normal wear and tear. We tried to get a definition of environmental factors, however the worker would not explain further. . The truck resides in the north east; it is subjected, as all vehicles are, to many environmental factors every day.
The speedometer is stuck at 49 mph and will not move up or down. G. M. Has had a problem with the speedometers for a number of years in the mid 2000's and has replaced the defective speedometer cluster panels on many vehicles under warranty. The cut-off is mileage and not the year of the vehicle. 85,000 is the cut-off and my 2005 Silverado 2500 is at 37,076 December 13, 2011. This is a second vehicle and my wife has a 2005 escalade that had the same issue with the speedometer and the local Cadillac dealer replaced it under warranty since it was below the threshold of 85,000 miles at the time. I talked to chris at g. M. At (866) 790-5700 x 40683 and she gave me a tracking number of 71-1011262550. Chris called me back after contact with the local Chevrolet dealership (champion Chevrolet) and said that she would not warranty the speedometer. The service advisor said that he would replace the cluster but that I would have to pay $175. 00 labor to install it. I bought the vehicle new in 2005 and would have bought something else if I had known of the defects in this vehicle. I have had to replace a third c. D. Radio which I paid for the labor to install which I feel is the manufacturers problem also. I am unable to tell how fast I am going with this speedometer. James a. Downs.
The truck suddenly stopped while backing up in my driveway. I stopped so suddenly that I thought I hit something. I got out of the truck and didn't see anything around the wheels or truck. I got back in the truck, stepped on the brake pedal and it went all the way to the floor without any resistance. I heard a squeezing sound and saw fluid squirting from beneath the driver's side door. The steel brake line on top of the truck frame was rusted and developed a hole from which the brake fluid squirted. There is second steel brake line on top of the the failed line, which is also rusted. The brakes have completely failed. My last vehicle had over 135,000 miles and the brake lines were in great condition.
Brake lines corrode easily which leads to leaking and loss of brakes under normal driving situations. This is the second time I've had to replace a section of brake line.
Brake line failure, left side behind wheel where lines run on top of frame. While in the drive thru lane at fast food restraunt. Nearly pinned pedestrian between my truck and the vechicle in front of me.

My 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500hd had broken exhaust manifold bolts. Repaired at 87,000 miles. Went to dealership today because of exhaust leak and was told there are more broken bolts at 136,000. Obviously there is a defect. Unsafe/raw exhaust leaking into air and cab.

Driving down the road at 50 mph and the spare tire and support bracket came off the truck and landed in the highway. It appears that the the 1 bolt that attaches the bracket and tire to the truck had backed off causing the tire to fall to the ground.
