Exterior Lighting Problems of Chevrolet Silverado 3500

Trailer brakes and lights come and go. I start with having everything then loose brakes and lights when I’m driving. This is apparently a known issue that they have a fix for but I have never received anything about a recall.

There is an electrical / turn signal and trailering issue. Not towing- the right turn signal gives a rapid flash when the automatic headlights are activated or in off position. The rapid flash goes away when manual headlights are used both running lights and on. Although the light still works with a rapid blink, there is a dash error message and it’s impossible to know while driving if the error is real or not. This issue is intermittent when auto headlights are selected. Towing- bigger safety issue. The trailer lights only work properly when headlights are in auto mode and daylight. When it gets dark, the headlights turn on and error messages happen and trailer lights go out. There are also error messages when manual running lights or manual lights are activated. Thus it appears there is no way to tow an RV safely at night. This did not occur on my 2021 chevy 3500. These issues are wide spread but gm is doing nothing about it. Please help me, the other owners, and the public from these dangerous vehicles.

Atc led trailer running lights drop out after 2 or so hours of operation. The trailer is being towed by a 2022 silverado high country 3500. I have had the silverado into serra whelan Chevrolet to check the trucks trailer lighting system, said they thought it was the trailer, on 5/10/22. Talked with the service person there and he recommended I purchase a curt resistance jumper plug part number 57003 because this is an issue with the truck not being able to see the low current drawing led running lights. I bought the curt part number 57003 and installed it between the truck and trailer plug. The running lights now drop our after about two hours of operation. I contacted Chevrolet customer service and started an issue # 9-10551955094 on 08/24/2023. Am going to try having serra whelan Chevrolet look at the trucks light circuit again. This is a serious safety issue, no trailer tail lights at night. This is an open issue not resolved by gm, I can only safely drive this trailer truck combination during the day, running lights drop out after around two hours of truck trailer operation. . . No solution has been found as yet.

Plugs for brake/running/turn signal lights have moisture and road salt inside and corrode causing brake/running/turn signal light to not operate. I have cleaned the corrosion out multiple times, now the contacts inside the plug have corroded away with the only resolution being to replace the wire harness. Parts are available for inspection. My safety and the safety of others is at risk due to failure of lights to operate. I have not contacted a dealer or service center. I have diagnosed the problem myself and will repair myself when I receive the new wire harness. I have several other individuals who have experienced the same failure as described.

The new gm 2021 trailer lighting module and/or system is defective. It fails a pre-connection test with tester, gives "check trailer wiring" warning on dash without a trailer connected and turns off any trailer lighting connected without warning on the road, without blowing a fuse. This problem is much like the TSB report #20-na-198 for earlier models. This issue was addressed by the dealer by replacing the module, but the problem has re-occurred while on the road causing a road safety issue (no trailer lighting), some times without warning. The dealer doesn't know what else to do at this point.

The mylink backup camera does not allow dimming at night when backing the vehicle causing the mylink backup camera screen in the dash to go full brightness, thus blinding the driver from seeing the passenger mirror. This is a safety hazard that can cause an accident when backing the vehicle at night.

The dimmer switch for interior lighting is prone to failure. When it fails, all dash and gauge cluster illumination will cease to function, causing dangerous driving conditions after dark. The driver will not be able to see any gauges or climate control features, which may cause a crash.

First complaint for this problem was reported on 10/21/10. Complaint #10361641. Same problem again dtr light on right side out,smelled burning wire saw that the same thing happened again. Wires leading to light assembly melted and also melted the socket again. I think this could possibly lead to some sort of electrical fire in the engine compartment. I fixed the problem myself the first time and will do so this time.
