The gear shift button was locked in park and I could not release the key from the steering column. After researching on the internet, advice said to push hard to the left on the gear shift to pop the button back out. I did that while jostling the button and it did pop out. When I pressed the button again, this time in neutral, the button got stuck within the gear shift column again, but I found that I could then just push the gear shift forward and back between gears without the button locking on the desired gear. This is a major safety issue because it appeared to me that if I were driving, the gear shift column could move to another gear if I hit a pot hole or bump, without me controlling it. In other words, it might have slipped into neutral or reverse. Shouldn't there be a recall on this? I have to take it to the dealer Wednesday, and if this happens again, I will have to drive the trip with my hand on the gear shift knob to insure it will not slip out of gear.
I have a 2012 chevy Sonic and the gearshift will not lock into place and an accidental bump will knock the car into another gear which could be dangerous to me and others. Reading online threads, I have noticed that this affecting many other cars of this make and model. I notice that gm wait until the last minute to issue recalls. I just hope that it is not to late for me and my family.
Gear shifter button gets stuck, not allowing releasing key from ignition. Driver has to have lubricant on hand at all times, to get shifter button unstuck. However lately it is getting somewhat harder to get it to work.
Gear shift knob sticks preventing removal of key. 2. Gear shift knob will not return to normal position preventing steering wheel to lock when vehicle is unoccupied, this seems to be common problem with this vehicle. There are many complaints of similar nature on web forums.
When placing the car in park the gear shifter button gets stuck and doesn't disengage. Since it doesn't disengage the keys can't be removed from the car. If the car is placed in reverse or drive the button stays stuck causing the shifter to be engaged and able to freely shift into reverse or park while driving. This has happened on several occasion and most often in colder temperatures.
For an automatic 2012 chevy Sonic. Gear shift knob became nonfunctional causing key to become stick in ignition. Could not exit vehicle. Could not shift into d or sometime out of drive into park. Eventually went to the dealer who replaced the whole unit at a charge to me. The replacement unit seems to occasionally stick in the same way however has not caused problems yet.
Button on shifter knob that allows car to be put into gear gets stuck and eventually breaks. This allows the car to accidentally be put into gear. This problem also does not allow you to remove your key from the ignition, forcing you to leave your key in the ignition if you want to leave the vehicle.
My 2012 Chevrolet Sonic has gotten its second flat tire from alignment issues, and is about to need a third tire replaced. The car has 26000 miles with a clean bill of health, other then major steering issues. The tires completely run bald on the outer edge of the tire, and a shaking is experienced at all speeds while driving the car. I had taken it to the dealership about this issue, but was told it was happening because I am not doing an alignment every 6500 to 7500 miles; which I find to be ridiculous. I have never heard of having to align a car that frequently. So there verdict this far is I have to by all new tires and get an alignment done on my car with only 26,000 miles. I contacted corporate headquarters out of frustration caused from the dealer ship writing me off twice, and saying its nothing to do with the car. Unfortunately corporate was unwilling to rectify this situation because of the same reason, it is considered wear and tear. I don't know how a car with such low miles could already have such a horrible alignment, requiring three tires to be changed. I have drove chevy's my whole life and have never experienced anything comparable to this.
Beginning from the first month of ownership. Approx. 28,000 mi. At cold start there is a rattle noise like metal on metal. Then will disappear right after. Has been getting worse/ louder. Hard shifts, loss of power. Now as of last night the check engine light is on and the car runs rough. High idle, stalls, knocking noises from engine. Fault code. P0011?.
Stick shift button started to stck and now the bitton is broken at the bottom. It is barly shifting to r, p or drive. Hits cause u cant push in button. Sometimes cant put in park or key is stuck cause it isnt in park all the way. This is going to mess up my transmition!!!.
As I was making a left turn in an intersection at 5:30am my rear glass window burst and all the glass shattered leaving glass on the four sides only. Inexplicable how it happened, my first reaction was too look back and see if anybody had hit us, but when I looked through the rear/side mirrors there was no cars behind us or near us. The same morning I called the dealership and they towed my vehicle to the shop for a transmission recall, per the dealer they would not cover it under the warranty due to general motors had no other vehicles reporting the same incident. I feel it should be looked at because I'm sure many 2012 chevy Sonics have it as a defect. With so many recalls I wouldn't doubt that the windows are being recalled as well.
2012 Chevrolet Sonic. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle metal grinding noises when accelerating from a stop.
Automatic shifter button sticks which doesn't let the key to come out. It's very dangerous driving while the button is stuck in. You can bump the shifter n it'll take it out of gear due to the shifter button sticking n not popping out.
On or around December, 2014, the shift cover would not attach permanently. On or around March 10, 2014, the electrical access plug did not operate. On or around March 6, 2014, my mother was driving around 45mph, and we hit an elk. No airbags deployed.
My vehicle has been a nightmare. In January I visited the dealership because my heater was not working. At that time I was told I would need to replace my battery soon that it had some leaking acid. Three weeks later I replace the battery. At that time the dealership installed a new battery and sent me on my way. Ive spent thousands since then repairing what the dealership described as a electrical nightmare. I also have told the dealership several times that there are transmission problems with my vehicle. I insisted they drive with me and although the transmission issues have been acknowledged, the dealership has been busy repairing the electrical damage of the battery, the have never touched my transmission. I still have transmission problems. My car hesitates and doesn't accelerate causing me to almost wreck several times. I also have had several ignition problems with my vehicle. One occasion my vehicle would not turn off. The key was in the off position but the car remained running for several hours until the battery was dead. Anther occasion I was pumping gas and the vehicle was turned off. My two young children were in the vehicle and the car started cranking itself. It attempted to start three different times. My car stalls at red lights and will decelerate in the middle of heave traffic. I am frightened to drive my vehicle and fear for me and my childrens safety. I have contacted gm several times and have had my car in for repair numerous times. My salesperson advised me to file a lemon law report and my mechanic described my vehicle as an electrical nightmare. No gm rep can explain why my vehicles battery would have caused this much damage being my car was less than 2 years old. Please help.
While engaging the shifter assembly into gear, the button on the assembly becomes stuck. The car can then be moved from park into any gear by accident. Also causing the key to be stuck inside the ignition of the vehicle.
On June 19, 2013, after picking up my 5 yr old grandson from summer camp, we were on our way to the park. I am driving approximately 45 mph and all of a sudden, my grandson opens the door! while the locks engage when put into gear, he was able to open the door! needless to say, I flipped out! that’s not supposed to happen! my doors are supposed to be locked!!! I find this very dangerous and unsafe for anyone, any age! my car does have child locks, but why should I have to turn them on every time someone gets in my car when my locks automatically engage when put in gear!!!!!?????????? Chevrolet has always been my favorite make of a vehicle and that is why I chose to buy one. Plus, the Sonic was a wise choice for me at the time because I was driving 60-75 miles a day back and forth to work and home. Then more traveling on the weekends to mobile, al to visit family. After that incident, please mark my word, that I will never buy another chevy again, and I will make sure that no one else does as well. I will contact my local news station and hire an attorney, if I have to, to make chevy improve my vehicle or give me something else that is safer for my family! what if something were to happen to my grandson? then what? what if it were you and your grandbaby or son or daughter? you best better believe that you would have the biggest lawsuit on your hands that you’ve ever had to witness!!! and I guarantee that you still will have one, if they don’t make this right! I am not asking for money (that’s not what I’m about), but simply another vehicle that is safer than the chevy Sonic and to make all chevy Sonics safer!!!! I am appalled that chevy would make a vehicle that is so unsafe!.
I have a 2012 chevy Sonic lt automatic with the 1. 8 liter. The car started having problems around 45,000 miles and has gotten worse over time. The car on cold start ups has a grinding sound. This grinding most of the time only happens on cold start ups but does at times happens on warm start ups. This sounds like metal against metal and it rattles. This seems to happen until the car is fully started and running. I am getting concerned because it is getting worse and louder.
The shifter mechanism gets stuck & the car cannot be put into drive. This happens many times-especially during the colder months, when the car cannot be shifted into drive & I am left stranded in extremely cold weather. Additionally, gm refuses to admit the shifter is defective & refuses to buy the car back, as I am just a student in college working a part-time job. I bought this car because I needed a dependable car to get me back & fourth to college & my part-time job. . . Because of the cars defects, I am often late for school & or work. Plus, my sister also has a chevy 2006 aveo she was given, but this car also has the very same issue's with the shifter. . . Therefore, when gm ceo mary barra testifies before congress and tells congress that gm is not hiding or covering-up any additional car problems. . . She is a liar & I am stuck with this pretty much useless car, that gm has my money & I don't have a dependable car & I/we are willing to offer both cars so that an independent expert mechanic can evaluate both cars to prove that gm indeed knew about these shifter mechanism defects going back to at least 2006 aveo model, but continued to sell these time-bombs to the young adults of this country, who are scrapping by to make ends-meat & try to get an education. . . Then we buy a car from an arrogant, ruthless, evil, lying company & we have nowhere to turn. . . I tired an NJ lemon law attorney, but I determined that he was actually I bed with gm & the other gm attorney. I want gm to take this car back, as I wouldn't sell it to my worst enemy, as that is not the right thing to do. I want gm to step-up to the plate & refund all my money so that I can go out & buy a dependable car from a reputable car company. My dad, michael larko, is also helping me with this mess.
