I experienced this issue after I came home from work one night. When I placed the car in park the button would not pop out allowing me to remove the key from the ignition. It also will not lock the gear shifter into place and you can freely move between gears without using the button. It will eventually come out, due to the force of the linkage pushing against it. Dangerous condition as you may accidentally hit the shifter while driving. On automatic transmission vehicles, the button that you press in to shift will break at the base of the button where it is held in by a small pin. The original button is a design defect that general motors knows about. They have released an updated version of the knob that is no longer one piece and it is sold as a repair kit. The repair kit part number is 4242-3234 and costs anywhere from 10-20 usd depending on the dealership purchased from. A number of owners have reported this issue on their cars with varying mileage.

Button on gear shift selector will depress, but will not release, making it very easy to accidentally bump the knob and put the car into another gear while the vehicle is in motion.
The contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic. On several occasions, the gear shifter failed to operate. The contact stated that the shifter button would depress, but not release. As a result, the vehicle failed to shift gears and the key became difficult to remove from the ignition until the shifter button was released. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the shifter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact mentioned that he previously had the shifter replaced twice; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but did not offer any assistance. The failure mileage was 52,956.
When I press the gas pedal the rpms shoot up but car excelerates slowly. It jerks hard when switching to another gear and takes several minutes to finally get to a safe speed. Sometimes the car struggles to go uphill and hardly able to reverse. Dealership cleared my engine codes during my last oil change. Check engine light came back on a week later, autozone pulled 3 codes (p0700, p0300 and p0717). Changed my spark plugs, used lucas oil/5. 25 oz. Fuel treatment twice but still no change. Sometimes I can smell burning rubber. This problem makes it hard to safely merge onto highways and get through traffic lights fast enough. Now autozone has accidentally cleared my codes so I can't see if any of the above listed codes have been resolved.
