9 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2014

Heading home from fireworks show with 3 children in the vehicle. Applied the brakes in our driveway. . . Nothing, straight to the floor. I have delivered mail since 2000 (not in this vehicle ), I have had my share of brake problems. This complete failure of brakes was the worst I had ever experienced. If it were not for quick thinking and my husband's actions, we would have plowed head on into our home. I hate to think what would have happened if we could not stop at the 5 intersections on the way home. Both brake lines blew, rust, corrosion and now untold amounts of stories just like ours. I have always driven Chevrolet vehicles. Not anymore! if I have to tow this beast to the dealership to unload it, I will. I will go to a chevy dealership and buy a Toyota. They can have this mess that they created. 5 lives were at risk last night. This is completely unacceptable.

10 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2014

Un-expectant failure of corroded brake line wife was operating a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe on a 4 lane divided highway at approximately 45 mph. When approaching an intersection, the light turned red and when she applied the brakes, the brake pedal ¿went to the floor¿ and the vehicle could not be stopped before entering the intersection. Wife kept pressure on the pedal and the vehicle finally came to a complete stop approximately 50 yards beyond the intersection. She was able to pull the vehicle into a parking lot a short distance later. Figuring the vehicle travelled approximately 100 yards from first applying the brakes until the vehicle came to a complete stop. Upon inspection, determined that one of the brake lines ruptured just below the driver¿s side door. The line that ruptured was very corroded in the vicinity of the rupture. All of the brake lines in the vicinity of the rupture also appear to be very corroded. Plans are to replace all of the brake lines. Had a similar problem with a 1999 pontiac grand prix where one of the brake lines failed un-expectantly due to corrosion. All of the brake lines on the grand prix were also replaced at the time of repair. Both vehicles are/were well maintained and garaged.

11 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 06/22/2014

I was out of town to visit family and as I was turning into a street and all of a sudden my breaks went soft and I had difficulty stopping. At first I thought what is wrong with this thing but as I got closer to a friends house the breaks no longer worked I had to push it to floor to slow down. I was so petrified I pulled over and waites for some friends to pick me up. I had to stay an extra day to wait to a shop to open. The mechanics stated I loss 2 brake lines and 2 calibers almost 700 I had to pay with no choice since I had to go home and work the same day. This was very upsetting and cost me tons of money I don't even have. This problem came with no warning what so ever.

12 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2014

The brake line on my 2002 chevy Tahoe busted while stopped at a busy intersection June 2014. The brake peddle was depressed after a normal stop when all pressure went away and I began rolling forward into the intersection before pushing the brake firmly to the floor to halt the vehicle. Upon pulling over I discovered a leak in the line mid-body of the vehicle and a empty brake fluid reservoir. After doing some research I discovered this is a common problem gm refuses to fix. The second incident happened on February 14th 2015 when stopping at another intersection which I almost went through. I again discovered a break in the line at roughly in the same spot. The shop told me the abs had rusted through.

13 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2014

The brake lines on this truck (and evry other gm truck this era) are rusted beyond belief!!! I fix them and fix them and fix them - I'm trying to do them all but I do not have the funds. . . This time the pedal went straight to the ground and the truck kept going. Had a choice, hit a stopped school bus or hit a tree. I chose the tree. Not much damage, but could have been worse!!! ive seen many many posts online with people complaining about this issue - I go to the parts store and they stock the bulk line and fittings and know the size for gm trucks because the problem is so common - its crazy that gm put such ferrous metal in these truck brake lines. I own cars much older and with many more miles and there are no issues. Same geographic location, same roads, same parking - different results. Hmmmm. . . . Its obvious they used cheap inferior crappy lines that have not stood the test of time. The pedal going to the floor is absurd! no failsafes? and the antilock brake mechanism (valves/electronics) are located in a spot on the frame that was installed before the body was mated to the chassis! great!!! how the heck do you fix it? im thinking of cutting a hole in the floor above it and welding it back in! this is crazy. . . A recall should have been in place years ago.

14 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 05/18/2014

Brake line located between the brake control module and the rear axle ruptured above the fuel tank during a stop from 45mph for a stop light causing me to have to veer into the right hand turn lane and unltimately turned into the cross traffic pattern. Fortuneately, there was no traffic at the time so there was no crash. It is also fortuneate that I was pulling a trailer with brakes to aid in my stopping or it may have been worse.

15 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 05/11/2014

Brake line burst from being so rusty, unable to stop in time, was able to veer off to side to avoid collision.

16 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2013

Prepared to leave the house, stepped on the brakes to put in gear and pedal went to floor. Had towed to dealer where was informed all brake lines had to be replaced due to corrosion failure. There was no warning, no fluid on the ground, just sudden catastrophic failure. Cost $2300. 00 due to body having to be lifted from frame. Now, a few months later fuel lines have suddenly failed for the same reason, I. E. : low grade cheaply made steel used in high corrosion area. Again the body lift required, estimated cost $2300. 00.

17 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2013

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph, she applied the brake and the pedal abnormally traveled to the floorboard. The vehicle failed to decelerate and there was an extreme increase in stopping time. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that one of the brake lines suffered from severe corrosion and would need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure and current mileage was 134,000.

18 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2013

I was towing a 4200 lbs travel trailer leaving for a vacation trip. While traveling down a hill the brake pedal went to the floor. Near total brake failure. I applied the emergency trailer brake and used low gear to stop. I just avoided hitting a stopped car in the intersection in front of me due to the traffic light being red. I brought my 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe LS to mavis tire. They showed me the brake lines under the truck. All four lines were rotted out and had to be replaced for a cost of around $1300. 00 if this is a problem with 1998-2004 gm full size SUV's and pick-up's, other owners better beware!.

19 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2013

Brake lines are severely corroded on this vehicle and my wife almost crashed because of the complete loss of braking from rotten tubing.

20 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 07/19/2013

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25 mph, the brakes became inoperable. The vehicle was driven to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the brake line was rusted and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 87,000.

21 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2013

Traveling at 65mph, wet pavement, brake to exit parkway, brakes failed, almost crashed, skidded off exit. Brakes went to the floor. Took car to shop, brake line ruptured from rust, no warning.

22 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 06/22/2013

While dfriving my 2002 Tahoe I was nearing the traffic intersection and began applying the brake. The pedal went straight to the floor and I couldnt stop the vehicle. I panicked as an 18 wheeler was making a turn and I was going to hit it. I hit the emergency brake and nothing happened I saw an area with alot of gravel and did my best to aim the car at the gravel. Thank goodness the 18 wheeler sped up and I barely slipped behind it and put it in park nothing happened but a grinding sound at that point I just shut the car off and it slowly stopped. I got it towed and when they jacked it up they said the brake lines where completely rusted out and the reason why the emergency brake didnt work was it was rusted and snapped. Gm needs to do something about this as I and my child could have been killed. There are tons of complaints about this and gm needs to step up before someone gets killed!.

23 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 06/04/2013

I started to notice "mushiness" in my brake pedal, especially when I was stopped at a light or stop sign. The vehicle wanted to push or drift. I noticed spotting on my carport floor. I examined my brake lines and they are very corroded, and considering they are stainless, they are not holding up and are failing prematurely. The vehicle only has 69000 miles on it. I checked my brake fluid and it was very low. On my way to purchase brake fluid, my warning light finally alerted me to the low fluid condition. It required an entire bottle to full the reservoir.

24 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 03/26/2013

This defect could have resulted in death if it had not happen in a parking lot at slow speed. No warning lights or other indicators, brake lines to the front of abs unit burst which resulted in total loss of braking.

25 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2013

I have an 02 chevy Tahoe with only 70,000 miles on it garage kept was driving down the road one day and brake pedal went right to the floor almost crashed brake fluid all over the floor we looked under the vehicle and it was total rust and carotid I called the dealer to see if there was a recall they said that this is a known problem and I said that it should be a recall I almost got killed we take care of our vehicles very well and garage kept I can't afford the price of the brake lines or the labor I think that this should be recalled immediately I have read all the testimonials I don't understand what is the hold up on the recall it should be done immediately.

26 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2012

Had vehicle inspected. Mechanic, who is very good, told me brake lines starting to rust. This latest inspection showed issue getting worse. Was told eventually will have to be replaces. Expensive.

27 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2012

Replaced brakes on rear of Tahoe go to bleed them a hard brake line busted. Looked at leaking area nothing but rust caked brake lines. Could have been bad if I was driving when this happened.

28 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2012

My wife was driving the vehicle and went to stop and had lost brake power. One of the lines running to the rear brakes had ruptured due to rust/corrosion. I took the vehicle to the repair shop and was told that all of my brake lines and fuel lines had rusted/corroded so bad they could not repair just the one but would need to replace all of the lines!.

29 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 12/07/2012

Rear brake like rusted out located on top of the frame rail above the gas tank on the drivers side. All other brake lines are very rusty.

30 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2012

Brakes stopped working with no warning!!! unbelievable, thank god I was in a parking lot and able to very gently come to a stop by mashing on the brakes and hitting a parking curb. After a little research online it looks like there's a case you have opened for the same issue. When will there be a recall? does someone have to die? has someone died from this? we'll probably never know because who would think the brake lines would just go like that. Again, no warning, no lights, still no indicator light on!!! I apologize for my excitement but I'm just shocked this is a known issue and it hasn't been addressed. I consider hitting the curb to stop my vehicle a "crash". I know it doesn't compare to real crashes but given the circumstances. . .

31 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2012

While approaching a stop sign at a "t" intersection on a local set of residential roads, the brakes completely failed on my Tahoe. I did not have enough pedal to stop for the stop sign and blew through the intersection, thankfully without striking any cars. Upon inspection I found brake fluid streaming from the brake line where it was mounted to the frame at the left rear wheel well. I was able to pump up the brakes enough to limp the 3 miles at about 20 mph back to my house for a repair. I was quite dismayed to learn of all the problems that exist with rusted gm truck brake lines. I plan to replace the entire set this spring with a set of stainless steel ones but really would prefer that gm do it, since they are the ones who made the brake lines out of substandard materials to begin with.

32 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2012

When stopping for a traffic light, brake pedal pushed to the floor. Vehicle stopped but noticed brake fluid under car and determined that brake line ruptured due to being rusted.

33 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 08/30/2012

Catastrophic brake failure while going downhill to an intersection with a stop sign. In mid-afternoon, while approaching a stop sign while heading downhill and attempting to stop, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. Pumping the brake pedal did not help. There was no warning of the failure and no warning light. I tried to apply the parking brake but it did not slow down the vehicle. Fortunately, no vehicle was stopped at the stop sign and there was no traffic on the cross road I was entering. I managed to shift into neutral and slow down enough to roll through the intersection and onto the right berm of the cross road where I waited for a tow truck. My mechanic said that there was brake fluid in the system, but that the brake lines were corroded and had failed, and had to be replaced. I'm very lucky to be alive. $1,201. 81 later, I'm back on the road.

34 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2012

I was coming out of my driveway and when I tried to slow down while making a left turn my brakes failed. I travel slowly to the end of my road made a right turn and continued until I was able to make a u turn and get back home. Once I reached home again using a combination of emergency brakes and eventually placing the transmission in park (once stopped) I was able to stop. I had the truck towed to my mechanic. The mechanic observed that the brake lines were rusted and had failed. All brake lines were replaced to restore my truck to service. Incidentally I have a friend that had also bought a chevy Tahoe in 2002. The week before my brake line failed his brake line failed - also rusted out.

35 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2012

Traveling at 35 mph I went to stop for a traffic light. My brakes failed without warning, the pedal went to the floor. I continued through the intersection and drifted to a stop. The line burst at the frame rail on the driver's side. A close inspection shows that all of the brake lines are in need of replacement. The rust on the lines, as well as the frame, are unreal. I have never my vehicle looks like it has been sitting in a river. I have worked on and restored cars for the last 25 years, but I have never seen a vehicle this new rust so fast. The body looks great. The only blessing was the line blew out the evening before I took my family on a 300 mile trip to the beach. I could see us all dead on interstate 95 because of a brake failure.
