The factory-applied clearcoat on my 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe is failing and delaminating. The clearcoat is peeling away from the base coat in sheets, exposing the underlying paint to the elements. This deterioration occurred without any external damage, collision repair, or environmental abuse. The vehicle has 76,000 miles and has been regularly washed and maintained throughout ownership. The affected areas include roof and door panels. The failure began as clouding and hazing of the clearcoat and has progressed to active peeling and flaking. This issue appears to be a widespread manufacturing defect. Multiple class action lawsuits have been filed against general motors alleging defective paint and clearcoat application on 2015–2020 full-size suvs produced at the arlington assembly plant [xxx] et al. V. General motors llc, case no. [xxx], and [xxx] et al. V. General motors llc). Thousands of owners of Tahoes, suburbans, yukons, and escalades from these model years have reported identical clearcoat failure. The alleged root cause is improper bonding between the clearcoat and base coat during the factory paint process. Repair estimates for a full repaint range from $3,600 to over $10,000. General motors has not issued a recall or technical service bulletin to address this known defect. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this matter and compel general motors to issue a recall covering the cost of repair for all affected vehicles. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
I have a 2017 chevy Tahoe z71, and the paint on the hood , now moving to the top of the Tahoe is showing visible defects. The hood paint started to look cloudy. Even after buffing and polishing it would not improve. Talk to a professional detailer who stated that the problem was with the clear coat. The cost to repair and repaint the vehicle would be way more than an average citizen can afford; especially this day in time. People have mentioned it may require sanding the exterior down to bare metal, which would affect the car’s resale value etc . . After doing some research , I do see this is a problem with many gm vehicles. What is gm doing to make this correction. Pics can be sent upon request. Looking to seek a lawyer.
The hood and top of the car on multiple Tahoes and suburbans with this body style and year have the clear missing I have family &friends same issue, as well as the bottom plastic piece by windshield wipers crack quick/loosen causing possible water to get in or defrost system to stall, also does not go through car wash systems many chevy models in the 2017-2020 years have issue especially 2017/2018.
Water intrusion via gps antenna defect into driver cabin above driver at visor attachment. Loss of gps, onstar and antenna functions. This occurred following heavy rain storms. August 2020 and was diagnosed and repaired. My research showed that this is an ongoing problem stemming back to at least 2015. Gm program bulletin number 15155.
Vehicle was traveling on I-55 south between the gluckstadt and madison exits around 5:45pm on 12/21/18 when the sunroof exploded sending chards of glass throughout the entire vehicle. There were no other vehicles close by an no overpasses within 2 miles of where the glass failure occurred. This is a very serious safety concern that Chevrolet needs to be aware of. The sunroof glass was in perfect condition and nothing hit the glass to cause the explosion. I have photos of the damage clearly showing that the glass blew out from the inside of the vehicle, further supporting the fact that this was a factory defect.
The design of the back passenger doors is dangerous because the shape of the door is in a point and not rounded, it is not covered in plastic or rubber. My 3 year old daughter got out of the vehicle over the weekend and started to run towards the sidewalk and struck her forehead on the pointed end of the door causing a deep gash that bleed profusely. . . . She had to be taken to the er for suturing. Very poor design for a vehicle that is typically purchased by families with kids.
Water pools somewhere between the roof and top of the hatch on both sides of the rear windshield wiper + drips down the back windshield for hours.
