2 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 05/13/2011

The emergency brake on my 2001 chevy Tahoe was diagnosed as having bad parking brake / e brake. I was unaware of this situation since I rarely need to use the parking brake. I will have to replace this item at a cost of approx. $575. Many other 2001 Tahoes have experienced the same problem. . I have replaced the parking e brakes twice since I purchased the Tahoe and now they have failed a third time. I never use the parking brake!! virginia safety inspection has failed and I have already been pulled over for not having a safety sticker for the parking e brake. There is also a strong burning smell from the rear tire / brake area, I am sure the vehicle will catch fire from the friction the bad design has caused. Parking brake pedal goes to the floor and will not hold the vehicle in drive, neutral, or reverse. Also discovered that the passenger side parking e brake actuator lever is missing and the parking e brake cable is not connected to the passenger side, this same lever is reported online as mysteriously missing from other chevy trucks as well, it is bad when the same part on various vehicles is missing on the same side, coincidence or bad assembly line process, maybe defective part that breaks. Repair is over 1000 dollars. Parking e brake fails to hold the vehicle safely and is endangering lives. Virginia law and safety inspections are not being met due to a serious design flaw of missing parts and a safety device not working properly on a vehicle. Missing safety parts from the assembly is hazardous, if parts were not missing, then they fell off and is still dangerous.

3 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 12/26/2010

Parking brake on 2001 Tahoe fails to hold vehicle. It will not pass state inspection until fixed. I have never used the brake and is my understanding that this is defect in 2001 Tahoe that was never recalled. Chevy needs to recall and fix the defected parking brake in all models.

4 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 08/21/2010

2001 chevy Tahoe - emergency/parking brake not functioning. Has not been functioning for years. I bought the vehicle new and I never used it, but when I was parked on a hill recently, I tried to use it but it did not work. From what I understand, this is a common problem with this vehicle. If it is a design defect that does not allow the vehicle to safely park without possibly hurting innocent people or damaging property, should the manufacturer be responsible?.

5 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 02/11/2009

I own a 2002 chevy Tahoe, the power steering has progressively gotten worse. At all times and instances you can not turn the steering wheel to the right, at any time you can turn the steering to the left, try parking, or turning right and it is not a task a large man can do easily, and I am a woman, there is no power steering turning to the right. The vehicle has been babied from day one, no excessive use or wear, the car is a 2002 and only has 53,000 miles on it, so I would gather the car is not abused. The vehicle has only been driven on paved roads. I took the vehicle to nimnicht Chevrolet in jacksonville florida to have them diagnose the vehicle, and the steering gear is bad at 53,000 miles and of course the upper intermediate shaft is rattling, and the parking brake wont hold the vehicle. I contacted chevy customer service and they told me it was normal wear and tear and since I was the second owner and the vehicle was outside of warranty they would not cover the repairs. Mind you this vehicle only has 53,000 miles. I have owned several vehicles and driven them to well over 100,000 miles and in every vehicle I have owned, Nissan, datsun, 2 volkswagens, never has the steering gone bad. Even with over 100,000 miles. This is a safety issue and is common for chevy, records indicate chevy has been having problems since 1999 with numerous components on all of their vehicles, especially steering and brakes for this vehicle alone their are over 190 service bulletins pertaining to defects in this vehicle alone, same vehicle 2003 has over 300 service related repair bulletins. I am scared to death to drive the vehicle this is my only transportation. I would hate to have an accident because of defects chevy is aware of and is relying on a bean counter for repair recall this is not normal for a vehicle to be broken at 53,000 miles. Brakes, tires, battery, belts that is normal wear and tear. The manufacturer should repair these defects free of charge.

6 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 08/04/2008

Noticed a grove in both rear rotors, upon inspection of the brakes it was determined that the parking brake shoes slipped down from it's mounting and scored the rotors. I was unable to remove the rotors on both sides, without damaging them. I had to use a puller to remove them. Both parking brake shoes were worn out and the braking plates were rusted out. This is the second time this has happened in 90,000 miles.

7 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 07/11/2008

I purchased a 'certified pre-owned' 2002 Tahoe 8/2004 that had 26,000 miles. I took it through state inspection 8/2005 and failed because I had no emergency brake. The inspector said he has encountered this problem several times. I went to mathis tire and they said my brake pads were to the rotors and it would cost $350. I went to the dealer and asked them how it passed their 150 point inspection with a worn emergency brake. They tried to explain that the emergency brake is not part of the brake system. They initially wanted to charge me over $350 until I asked to speak to the owner. I ended up paying $184 to fix it. I took my truck through inspection 7/11/08 and failed because of the emergency brake. I have never heard of an emergency brake wearing away more than once but to have it happen twice. And, no I do not ride with the emergency brake engaged.

8 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 05/15/2008

The air conditioner belt and tensionor have failed as a result of the air compressor. I have been told there is high compression in the revalve and intermittent in the compressor. The failure has caused the belt to shred. Also, about a year after I purchased the Tahoe brand new, the emergency/parking break started losing it's tension. Now, it will not prevent the vehicle from rolling.

9 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 02/29/2008

My parking brake does not work, although I have never used it. I tried to get my car inspected, but they would not pass it due to the brake. They said gm is aware of the issue but is doing nothing about it.

10 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 02/24/2008

The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe. While the vehicle was parked on a hill, the contact attempted to release the hand brake three times. The hand brake loosened and a piece of metal with cable attached to it detached from the vehicle. The vehicle began to roll and nearly struck an older couple. Gm advised him to bring the vehicle in for diagnosis, but he has not done so at this time. The VIN was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 49,600. Update 04-02-08.

11 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 02/13/2008

The left front and rear caliper are not working properly on my 2001 Tahoe. The left rear is shot, and the pad has worn clear to the rivets witch ate up the rotor. The cooling shield has rotten away. I haven't checked the right rear yet. The brakes sound like they are grinding. The truck is now at my mechanic shop to be fixed.

12 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 02/06/2008

My vehicle failed inspection due to the emergency brake being out of order. I have not had it fixed yet but I did a search for the parts online and came upon a website with many owners of my vehicle with same problem. I think that this matter certainly is something that needs some serious investigation time spent on it. I have owned my truck for three years now and I have not once used the emergency brake once.

17 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 02/26/2007

I have a 2002 chevy Tahoe with emergency brake problems. I have taken my vehicle into gmac for brake inspections with only 20,000 miles and was told that is the way emergency brakes are. I have to put my foot to the floor of the vehicle to engage e-brake. The vehicle will move (drive) with the e-brake on. Now, I am up to 70,000 miles and I'm scared that the vehicle won't stop when I need it too. I have heard this is a common problem with chevy Tahoes in years 200-2003 due to a brake pad issue. Please do something before someone dies.

18 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 01/10/2007

Our 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe failed the annual safety inspection due to the parking brake not functioning at all. Was advised by the inspector that this is a common problem in the Tahoe and other gm suvs due to a poor design of the parking brake shoe attachment. Since the parking brake did not function at all, it indicated that both parking brake shoes were not functioning. As explained by the inspector: the attachment point fails easily allowing the parking brake shoe to drop down and come into contact with the rotor, which then renders the parking brake useless. If not caught relatively soon, the pad will be worn off from contact with the rotor and the underlying metal of the shoe can damage the rotor. Both parking brake shoes were detached and the minimum cost was $120 if the shoes only needed re-attachment, however since both pads were worn from rubbing the rotors the cost to repair was quoted as $250. A second estimate was $300. Actual cost of repair was $234. 43. The second repair shop that quoted $300, also stated that this is a common problem with gm suvs. The inspector told us that gm is aware of this defect, but has chosen to do nothing about it. The end result of a poorly designed parking brake shoe is a useless parking brake that the consumer is not aware of until inspected or an accident occurs and then an extremely costly repair. After a quick search on the internet, it is clear that this is a common problem and that accidents have already occurred. . Read more...

22 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 08/12/2006

Our Tahoe failed the state inspection due to the parking brake not holding. Both parking brake pads were replaced and then 2 years later we failed the state inspection again due to the same parking brake issue. This time one of the rotors was destroyed with about a 1/4" groove in it which made the repair even more costly. Our region is totally flat, so we don't even use the parking brake! there is no reason why there should be any wear on the parking brake what-so-ever. Especially twice in the 5 yrs we've owned the vehicle. After asking around and researching on the internet, it appears that there is a serious recurring issue with this brake design and up to this point it has all been at the owner's expense. Old brake discs are not available but destroyed rotor is.

28 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 03/16/2006

Applied parking brake while assisting another motorist with a dead battery. After reentering my vehicle I started to back up and noticed that my parking brake was not holding. I tested the brake as described in owners handbook. The parking brake did not hold. I feel lucky that the vehicle did not move while I was assisting the motorist with the dead battery. Had the vehicle moved forward I would have been trapped/crushed between the two vehicles. I also own a 2001 chevy truck and it had a recall on the parking brake. Why has general motors not recalled the parking brake on the 2001 Tahoe. I guest it will take a death or serious injury before they will fix this problem at their cost not mine.

33 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 11/21/2005

I previously filed a complaint for the rear seat belt malfunctioning but this vehicle has several dangerous issues. . The throttle sticks and happened with my 2 children in the vehicle driving 55 mph. . Not fun! the outcome could have been detrimental. The parking brake does not work and has been "fixed" 2 times. . It still does not work and will not pass inspection. . . The antilock brakes engage for short stops and the vehicle slides!! this is just unbelievable to me. Gm must have many lawsuits in the works and many to come.

34 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 10/13/2005

Rear brakes make noise. After removing rear brake rotors the problem was found. The emergency brake pads slid down and drag, extremely wearing the brake surface. Also the backing plates rust through in some areas. G. M. Has a new brake shoe clip to hold shoes in place. They did not cover any of the repair. The rotors have to be replaced, the emergency brake pads and the pad clips. This could be a very dangerous condition. The dealer told me this is a large problem with the Tahoes and the full size pickups.

35 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe

Failure Date: 08/30/2005

2001 Chevrolet Tahoe emergency brake wore out pre-maturely at 18,000 miles of freeway driving. Always parked on level ground and kept in a garage. When taken to the dealership they said brakes were not covered under warranty and that this was normal. They wanted over $300. 00 to replace the brake shoes in the separate emergency brake drums. This is more than a complete brake job on that car typically costs.
