Key does not release from ignition. It turns the engine off but will not go into the lock position without quite a bit of wiggling back and forth. It started out every once in awhile and now it is every single time we try to turn the key off and take the key out. I took the Tracker to a lock smith thinking it was just the key or the hole the key goes in and he informed me that chevy had sent him quite a few Trackers and Geo's to fix this problem. I think this should be a recall item as, if the key fails to come out then the car is accessible to anyone that passes by it. It will be stolen. This is something that I am reading about with other Trackers and I think it should be taken care of by the dealer, it is a defect.

2000 Chevrolet Tracker SUV, have had problems since day one with key being stuck in ignition. You can put it in 4-wd /reverse and the key will come out. Also, this vehicle is very unstable when going onto a ramp of a freeway if there is any curve in the ramp whatsover.
Power steering failure. The problem was with the rack and pinion. The consumer also had to replace the ignition switch.

Ongoing problem with the key sticking in the ignition after the vehicle was turned off. When this occurred consumer was able to remove the keys by jiggling it in the ignition. Problem progressed, and the key was currently stuck in the ignition, and wouldn't come out. Dealership was contacted, and indicated that the ignition had to be replaced.
Key is stuck in ignition. Will not turn to lock position so key can be pulled out. Also, interior door handle has broken off of passenger side door rendering it impossible to open from inside. Driver side interior door handle frame broken off, can still open door from inside.
Key stuck in accessory position, unable to remove key. Brought car to dealer, ignition lock cylinder needed replacement, not covered under extended warranty, (for which we paid extra). Replacement cost $294. 00 (with a small courtesy discount) and no guarantee of problem not reoccuring. This certainly is not a usual problem and not the first exact same complaint logged with NHTSA-how many more are needed to realize there's a problem? also, how many have had this problem, but do not know about this agency or how to get the info to you?.
Ignition key gets stuck in ignition switch. Car may be in accessory use or completely off but key remains. At times the key can't be removed easily and must be left in the car. Dealer indicates that this is a common problem but is not a saftey issue, which can't be true. If the car can't be completely turned off there is a fire safetlt issue. Cost of repair is $390. Chevy should pay for the new ignition switch ($189) as it is obviously a pervasive failure mechanism.
2000 Tracker bought new have had it for 3 years. On July 28, 2003 key got stuck in ignition and could not be removed. Could start vehicle and shut off, but not remove key.
The key would not release from the ignition, it was stuck. I contacted the dealer, they also could not get the key out either. Had to replace the key lock. I hope that something can and will be done about this. Dealer told me that they have worked on other Trackers with the same problem. Hope this will help bring a recall on this problem.
Key could not be released from ignition switch. Key will not turn into the locked position to be released. Dealer notified, and unable to fix due to lack of parts. Feelfree to provide any further details.
The key did not come out of the ignition. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and the ignition switch was replaced. The consumer noticed a burning smell. The dealer stated that the reservoir for the 4-wheel drive was burning oil. The ignition problem was a common problem with gm vehicles. The drive train developed a noise, metal was found in the rear end, the steering shaft mechanism broken and allowed the key to go back into the lock position, the fuel gauge was intermittent, and the a/c was inoperative.
Ignition switch / key won't turn off and take key out / turn to acc/on/start fine then turn back to acc and stuck there won't go all way to lock where key to enter and out that area problem.
When the ignition lock is in the off position it is difficult to remove the key. You need to wiggle the key around to get the key out.
