Brake Light problems of the 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer - part 1

62 problems related to brake light have been reported for the 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2013

The indicated vehicle is my wife's. We bought it brand new on 09/26/2001. She has never towed anything and has city and highway miles. We have had numerous problems: instrument cluster, rear tailgate strap, right rear brake light, (3) solenoids, spare tire dropdown and deteriorated transmission lines. I have repaired all of the previous out of pocket (except for the strap and the spare tire dropdown). Now, my wife was on the way to the bicycle store in her truck, with the bicycle on the back. She was making a turn onto the main road when she heard grinding and squealing, and the speed dropped drastically. Luckily, it was around 10am when there is not much traffic on the road. Reading numerous posts on this website, it is the same problem everyone has had, the transmission sun shell, and no reverse. With 98911 miles, I was about to spend the weekend changing the fluid in the transmission to keep it to spec. Now, I'm looking at a very expensive bill of which I cannot afford. $30 is easier than $1200. And, I'm a manufacturing engineer, so I check fluids regularly, even though the oil change stations check them. Seeing that there are problems with these components, I think that general motors should produce a recall. I'm very disappointed that with all of the complaints, nothing has been done to remedy the situation. We will be calling the dealer that we bought the vehicle from first thing Monday morning.

2 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2012

The fiberglass cowling on top of the rear hatch fell off while driving, dangling only by the brake light cable. I had to cut the wire and remove the piece of body and light. Went to dealer asking about repair, they said it was caused by "use of the tailgate during winter conditions of snow and ice. " they said "we see it all the time. " I asked, since it occurs with high frequency, if it is covered by warranty, bulletin or recall and they said "no, gm considers this an owner/operator error. " in other words, on this vehicle, a 4x4, the tailgate cannot nor should not be used, in the midwest, during periods of snow or ice? alas, I am driving without the mandatory center brake light. Please remedy this situation with proper replacement. Sadly, I see this condition on the same make and model more often than not.

5 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2009

Third brake light wing flew off while driving on the expressway.

6 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2007

Both brake lights constantly fail. Im tired of going back to the dealer, having them tell me they've corrected the problem and a few days later my brake lights are out again. It is truly a pain to travel with infants knowing that the back brake lights are out. We've attempted everything possible and the problem still persists. There appears to be no long term or permanent fix.

7 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2007

- the contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer. When the brake pedal was depressed, the exterior brake lights would not illuminate. The hazard lights would not illuminate when he turns on the switch. He felt that the vehicle should be a part of recall # 01v364000. The manufacturer informed the contact that his vehicle is not part of the recall. The vehicle's current mileage was 55,000 miles.

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer. While driving 40 mph, the headlights dimmed. The dealer stated that the dimmer switch failed. As October 3, 2007, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle. The contact stated that the brake lights also failed to illuminate. There is a recall for the exterior lighting: brake lights (NHTSA campaign id number 04v527000), however, the dealer refused to perform the repair. The failure mileage was 65,000 and current mileage was 100,000.

9 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2006

I have had to replace both drivers side and passenger side brake lights numerous times only to have them burn out within 4-6 months of installing new ones. This cannot be normal.

10 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2005

Who do I contact about recalls not being performed on my vehicle?.

11 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2005

Dealer refused to complete repairs for stoplight assembly recall on the 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer. Consumer received numerous safety recall notices regarding air bags, defective stop light assemblies, etc. Serviceman performed the seat belt tests, informed that both of the tail light assemblies required replacement under the recall notice at no charge to consumer. No delivery date was available for parts.

12 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2005

Stop lights keep going out.

13 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2004

Nhtsa recall campaign 04v527000 concerning brake lamp failure. No parts were available. . . . . . .

14 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2004

The brake light would go off on its own. The light bulbs needed replacement. Mechanic informed the driver that the problem could not be duplicated.

15 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2004

I have a 2002 chevy Trailblazer on which I has replaced the right brake light 6 times, and left brake light 3 times in 44,000 miles. I have a relative who also owns the same make/model and is about even with that count. Chevy has offered to extend the warranty and replace these lights and sockets for free but this does not fix the problem as I have had 3 light failures since my socket was last replaced as has my relative. It is apparent that chevy is not willing to fix this problem, only patch it up. With tail lights, you only discover it is out if a cop hands you a ticket, or someone else is kind enough to tell you when you stop. Given the frequency with which this occurs, it is very likely that you would end up driving around with no brake lights at all and not realize it.

16 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2004

Left brale light failure due to socket not holding bulb tight dealer would not fix because about 600 miles over warranty.

17 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2004

Consumer stated brake lights failed.

18 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2004

I own a 2002 trail blazer ext. I bought it brand new and I have had many many problems with it. I finally have had it and decided to see if the internet reported any similar problems and to my amazement there are many people out there with the same problems, but here is my story. I have had to have the brake lights electrical system on both sides replaced, molding around the license plate frame repaired, oxygen sensor replaced, sway bars replaced, windshield wiper motors replaced, left side passenger window motor broke twice, gas tank replaced because it was leaking gas and now it is back in the shop once again because the engine light came on and I had the onstar system do an engine analysis and they said something is wrong with my power train. I took it to the dealership and they call to tell me the gas tank is leaking gas and needs to be replaced. I told them I just had it done in October 2003. They told me I could not drive my vehicle. I see there was a recall done on some 2002 Trailblazers due to a problem like this, but they say my vehicle is not one of them. Why? I am having the same problems with the gas tank. This is the second one. I am lucky I took it in or something may have happened if it is this dangerous. I would appreciate a response back. Thank you, kathy yates.

19 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2004

Brake light failure, left rear (drivers side)brake light bulb burns out on a regular basis. I have noticed this same condition on many other Trailblazers. Many Trailblazers that I see on the road, I notice their same brake light out and the driver is unaware! I need to replace this bulb every few months.

20 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 07/28/2004

My 2002 trail blazer brake lights go out all the time. I changed the bulbs several times, but the problem seems to be the board that holds the light bulbs. The bulbs fit lose in the board, and it does not make a great connection.

21 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2004

The brake lights on my 2002 trailbalzer have either burned out or failed to function 3 times in the past 2 years. A serious issue since I was notified by other drivers while driving in heavy traffic. Once the bulbs were replaced at the dealership and the other times at local mechanics while I was traveling. Enough of an issue to make me consider trading vehicles.

22 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2004

Both rear brake lamps not working when pedal is pressed. Both bulbs and all fuses seem to be fine.

23 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2004

During four consecutive oil changes, it was noted that a brake light was out.

24 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2004

Left brake light does not work, even after replacing the bulb with a new bulb.

25 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2004

2002 Trailblazer - rear brake lights burning out - had left side replaced under warrenty by gm dealership (circuit board where lights plug in burnt out) back in Feb. 2004 -- dropping truck off again at dealership for same problem with the the right side brake lights -- went through 12 bulbs since Jan. 2004 - got stopped by police for brake lights out. Also experiencing problem with front end making noise when going over bumps and passager side seat belt locks up for no reason - dealership ordered new one back in Feb. 2004 and still waiting for it - see what happens tomorrow when I bring it back to dealership for these above problems.

26 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2004

Brake lights went to working occasionally to not working at all now.

27 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2004

This problem concerns a repeated lighting systems failure. This incident occurred when I was notified by another motorist that when I had the brakes on while stopped at a stop light that both the left and right tail stop lamps were not lit although the center high mounted stop lamp did light to indicate the brakes were on. I had had to have both of these lamps replaced only about 3 months ago when they both burned out within a short period of time, perhaps simultaneously as they might have last week. After the incident last week I put in new bulbs but, unlike the first incident 3 months ago, the lamps would not light properly when the brake pedal was depressed. I will notify the dealer where I bought the vehicle next week when their service department is open again that this problem with my vehicle needs attention.

28 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2004

The driver-side brake light bulb repeatedly burns out (3 times in as many weeks). Appears that the bulb doesn't make a snug fit in the socket. I found a TSB from gm regarding this. The dealership refused to correct the problem under warranty (48k miles). I purchased the replacement parts listed in the TSB, replacing the board, which resulted in a snug fit between bulb and socket. No issues since. This is probably related to defect investigation pe04032. This is on a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer lt with 2wd and i6 engine.

29 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2004

Brake lights on Chevrolet Trailblazers are continuously going out. Every single Trailblazer I see on the road that is not brand new has either one brake light missing or both. Went to dealership to question if there was a recall on this incident and said no, but has to replace circuit boards on models of Trailblazers. This is not fair if the vehicle is no longer brand new and without a warranty. This defect should not be at the cost of the owner for a defect of this caliber. This is dangerous to other drivers if they are not able to see the vehicle braking in front of them.

30 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2004

Found both main brake lights inoperable at the same time. Both bulbs needed replacement after just 2 years. Bulbs also loose in sockets leading to intermittent operation and probable shortened bulb life. Also noteworthy: 9 out of 10 SUV/pickup trucks that I see with inoperable tail/driving lights are recent model gm products.

31 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 02/13/2004

Ongoing brake light failure on '02 chev Trailblazer. In the last year or more, I replaced the driver-side brake light bulb four times and once for the back-up bulb. Most times the bulb looks fine but I replace anyway. Sometimes the brake light works intermittently. According to chev parts dealer, the sockets on the circuit board gets corroded and causes a short, so I replaced the "circuit" board (out of pocket costs) on 2/14/04 but the brake light still doesn't light up. I loved driving the vehicle but this could be a deal- killer for gm in the future. They had better recall and fix this issue, or there will be several others like me who will go to another manufacturer.

32 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2004

Our 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer has problems with its lights. We have had multiple problems with headlights and brake lights. We know others with the same problems and see many on the roads with brake lights out.

33 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2004

Vehicle brake lights keep on failing, bulbs burn out very often.

34 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 01/27/2004

Brake lights have gone out 5 times in as many months. Vehicle idols extremely high, shifts hard into second gear and bad vibration when braking.

35 Brake Light problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2003

Brake light failure. . . . Repeated burnt out bulbs on drivers side brake lamp switch control module for 4x4 replaced under warranty at 34,000 miles. Module has acted "quirky" since replacement. I have experienced temporary failure which corrected itself by next day. Possible loose wire???.
