Five problems related to transfer case have been reported for the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Certain sport utility vehicles equipped with 4 -wheel drive fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 101, no. 110, no. 114, no. 225, no. 209, & no. 208. Vechicles were built with a left -front brake pipe with a circumferential score at a random location along the lenght of the pipe as the result of the manufacturing process. If the brake pipe partially or fully fractured, brake pedal travel would immediately increase and front brake performance would be reduced under certain circumstances the front lower control arm brackets may fracture. Missing welds on the rear flow plan the calibration of the transfer case control module could cause insufficient high speed gear engagement. This fracture could result in separation of the front lower control arm from the frame some of these vehicles were built with a range shift collar in the transmission transfer case that contains cracks.
Transfer case seals are leaking fluid, leaking onto exhaust system.
Transfer case failure; lost 4 wd while driving on ice in alaska. T-case failure occurred at 36k miles. When case was opened, interior components were completely disintegrated.
The failure involves the electro-mechanical device that shifts the car into four-wheel drive. The four-wheel is engaged by selecting 4wd with a dashboard selector switch. The switch will show a lighted indicator moving from 2wd to the 4wd. This indication is faulty. While driving towards a snow covered mountain road with several sharp turns going up the mountain the vehicles selector switch was moved to the 4wd position and the indicator light shown it was engage in the 4wd mode. However the indication was faulty and the vehicle was actually only in 2wd. The selector switch engages an actuator that causes a fork to move the gears in the front transfer case into or out of 4wd. The result of the false indication of the vehicle being in 4wd when it was actually in 2wd cause the rear of the vehicle to break traction and the entire vehicle to start into a spin which resulted in the vehicle leaving the road and damage to the front end of the vehicle. The main problem is that the vehicle gave a false indication of being in 4wd when it was actually in 2wd.
Vehicle switching into 4wd/awd on its own - malfunction took vehicle in because vehicle was trying to switch into awd and 4wd on its own at freeway speeds. When this happens, entire vehicle jerks when switching (on its own) from 2hi to awd. Chevy service department found problem in transfer case module. They replaced module and program. Vehicle 4wd malfunctioned again. Vehicle trying to switch into 4wd and awd on its own. Took vehicle back to service department. Service department replaced encoder motor. Vehicle is still switching into 4wd and awd randomly. I will take it in again. These problems started while still under warranty. I have under 43000 miles on vehicle at this time. Internet search shows many Trailblazer owners with this same problem.
