6 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2020

I was driving down the freeway at about 67 mph when the message "traction control disabled" came on my display & the car immediately went into "limp mode"! by some miracle I was able to muscle the car out of the slow lane, onto the shoulder as I lost my power steering once in limp mode. I waited a few minutes, car started up just fine, so I shrugged it off. Fast forward 1 week later & the same thing happened to me on my way home on a curvy mountain road. The power steering was again non-existent & luckily, there was no one behind me, nor did anyone come around the corner & hit my disabled car. Once again, it started up, no problem; however, this is when the harsh forward thrust started happening, & the transmission seemed to be slipping gears. The rpm's would rev to the 6000 range & immediately fall down to 1500. I took it to the dealer & sadly paid $3,400 for a new tranny on a 5-year-old car. (no warranty, of course). I started having the same issues about 2 years later, only this time the driver was not so lucky as they were mid-curve on the mountain road. Right as the roadway came out of the bend, the car went into limp mode, power steering lost & wheels stuck in a right turn position, car went off the roadway & into a telephone pole, broke that in half due to the angle of the pole in the mountainside & down the steep embankment about 40-50 feet. All airbags deployed & driver was able to walk away (hike away) but the car was a total loss. Driver was traveling 40-45 mph. There was no indication, no warning, just from travel to nothing.

My steering locks up when trying to turn right for the first time after getting in the car. It has happened to me twice, and both times it was raining. It happens out of nowhere. 12 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/26/2018

My steering locks up going at slower speeds and turning. My vehicle has the same issue with the steering as the other 2009-2013 chevy Traverse steering . It's the same part, issue and vehicle as the warranty was extended to fix the steering up to 10 years and 150,000 miles and I am being told you have not included my VIN # under this warenty and I need a valid explanation why my VIN isn't covered. It's the same issue, the same part and the correct year.

14 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2017

"takata recall" I have had this car for a few years and every year I have had to replace the alternator and or battery. This morning I was driving my son to daycare and my son to work the check battery systems light came on. I know from previous experience that the car is about to completely shut down. As expected a few miles up the road the traction light, abs light and other lights appeared on the dashboard. The car shut down completely, the hazard lights will not even turn on. As I stated before this is the third time that I have as this problem in the same amount of years. I have taken it to the dealer to be checked but the are not sure what to look for due to the fact that there is not a recall. This needs to be investigated. These cars are built to hold families. The car shutting down for no reason and without much warning is putting lives at risk. The chevy Traverse is a popular car for families because of the space. There are hundreds of complaints from other families having this same exact problem. Please don't wait until it becomes deadly to take action.

15 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2017

I took my 2012 Chevrolet Traverse in for a standard oil change today and they tell me that I have a steering gear leak at 34,000 miles. I am reading that many others also have this problem. The cost to fix is $1,375. This is a major safety issue and gm should be doing a recall and paying for the repair. I was going to go on a family vacation and now need to get this fixed first.

16 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2017

Power steering intermittently fails at low speed we have had near collisions and as a result my wife cannot drive the car she’s not strong enough to turn the wheel at low speeds I’m afraid somebody’s gonna get in a wreck with this or another car like it I’ve heard other complaints from Traverse owners about the same thing.

17 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/31/2017

While driving thru a parking lot there was a loud noise in the front end followed by the steering wheel locking up. I had to shut the engine off and turn it back on to be able to get the steering wheel to move.

18 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/16/2017

I purchased a 2012 Traverse it has known issues and the dealer and the company's headquarters stated they are known issues but there are not any recalls and would not replace or give any discount in fixing the defects. The Traverse driver's seat bracket and side seat cover have been replaced three times, the air condition wiring harness is located in a place the rubs against the chassis and the frame that cause a hole to rub in the line. The front will not remain in alignment. Vehicles are very noisy, we have to talk loud or turn the radio up to hear. I have talked to the headquarters all the way down to the local dealers with no resolution or help. Please help.

19 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2016

My wife and I purchased a used 2012 Traverse with 56,000mi on it last summer. We now have 76,000mi on it, and just recently we have experienced the power steering loss that many other Traverse owners have been complaining about online. I am glad to know that we are not the only people to experience this issue - and I am very disappointed in gm that there has been an issue with the power steering systems on these vehicles and there has not been a safety recall issued. This most recently happened to my wife while pulling out of our driveway onto a busy road - power steering completely went away. Unable to steer the vehicle, she ended up in the opposite lane with oncoming traffic - slammed on the brakes and quickly put the vehicle in reverse and backed into the front yard and parked the vehicle. After all the complaints found online with this issue I am surprised nobody has gotten killed yet because of this - or maybe they have and they just aren't here to tell us why they pulled out into oncoming traffic due to the fact the power steering quit working and they couldn't steer their vehicle. I hope gm will take action against this issue before it affects me personally. Best regards, kevin stoykovich 8948 8 mile rd kaleva mi 49645 231-510-2746.

20 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2016

"takata recall" I recently purchased a 2012 Chevrolet taverse with 35,000 miles from supreme Chevrolet Cadillac of plaquemine on 5/23/2016. The engine light has been on for a little over a week now, the "service airbag" shows on the dashboard, the airbag light is on, the steering wheel alignment is off, the passenger window power button on the driver side want roll the window down at times, their is a noise when the air is on and also when I turn it off, and gets worse when I move the steering wheel. . My car was parked in my driveway when I noticed the lights for the airbag and engine, it was in motion when I noticed the button for the window, the steering wheel alignment was off, and the noise being made. Their was a recall on 2012 Chevrolet Traverse in December of 2015 and earlier in 2015, im not sure how long a recall last but if I am gonna pay almost $41,000 for this vehicle I would like for not only myself but my 3 children and fiance to feel safe riding in it. If there is anything else I need to explain feel free to contact me. .

21 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2016

Takata recall- while turning at a low rate of speed, the steering will locks up and you can not turn. I have to put my car in park and then shut it off , then I restart it, and it will turn. This is a major safety issue. My 16 year old, who just got his license discovered this. I thought he was doing something wrong, til I drove it today, and it happened to me. Talk about scary?!!! what if I was turning into oncoming traffic, I would have been hit for sure. I have read numerous complaints involving this. Why are they not fixing the issue. Are you waiting for someone to die? then you will fix the issue? major safety issue!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

26 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2016

After routine inspection and an alignment it was reported to us by the dealership that the steering system was leaking, specifically from a valve issue. This has been identified already by gm in a service call reported from another user: service #14329 from gm. Apparently this is a common problem in gm models, but it has not been applied to Traverse recalls. Request that this is elevated and gm issues a complete recall/reimbursement for all vehicles with this steering leak to specifically include Traverse/acadia models.

27 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2015

This car has a very common problem with the steering. The steering rack is leaking which will lead to an inability to steer the car effectively. Chevrolet has an special service #14329 that covers this for a number of model years including 2012 but for some reason the VIN for my car was not included but it exhibits the identical problem. I need gm to expand it's special service to include all cars that exhibit the problem. There are multiple examples here that illustrate the extremely dangerous aspects of this failure.

28 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2015

While driving during wet conditions, the power steering stopped working, nearly causing the vehicle to impact a curb and tree. The dealer is looking into the reasoning for this, there seem to be numerous counts of 2009-2013 gm crossover vehicles having the same issue, without recalls. I feel this is a major safety issue, as I was driving with my 4 year old son.

29 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2015

Vehichle very hard to steer. Loud noise when shift out of park. Hard to steer at low speed, took to dealership they kept my vehicle refused to provide loaner car until diagnosed two days later. Dropped off on a Friday dealer says repair to steering won't be done until Tuesday. Researched online and found this problem on many chevy Traverse forums. This car needs to be recalled before someone is injured.

30 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/24/2014

On 24 Dec 2014 at around 11:45am, I was pulling off a main road (with my young daughter) into the parking lot of my doctor's business, when my steering wheel locked completely while I was still in motion. After braking, I was able to jiggle the steering wheel free and pulled the car into a parking space. I contacted my dealership immediately to report the incident. As it was christmas eve, they were closing within minutes and I was told to bring in the car on Friday, Dec 26th. . Which I did. After an assessment was completed and the service department "could not duplicate customer's complaint of loss of power steering", I was told there was nothing else they could do for me until the problem happened again and with more regularity. The service reps did share that there has been reported incidents with the Traverse regarding loss of power steering, but no further information was shared with me. Upon driving out of the dealership, I promptly contacted gm who opened up a case report. I have requested that gm and the dealership conduct a more thorough diagnosis of the steering system as I deem this incident more than just a "random" incident. This is rather alarming and I and my daughter are extremely lucky that this did not happen minutes before when we were on a major interstate driving at a higher speed. Needless to say, I feel very unsafe in my car now and feel it necessary to report the incident to NHTSA in the event other 2012 Traverse owners have reported the same. Thank you.

31 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2014

Driver began to feel and hear a rubbing noise coming from the wheel well. When trying to make a low speed left turn off of a primary road into the entrance of a business, the steering completely locked up and the driver was unable to turn and was stuck in the middle of the opposing lane of traffic. Fortunately for the driver and passengers, there was no oncoming traffic and the driver was able to manually steer (with difficulty against a lot of resistance from the steering wheel) the car back into the correct lane and continued on until pulling over in a safe location on the same block.

32 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2014

The contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that while making a left turn, the power steering suddenly malfunctioned and the steering wheel seized. The vehicle was able to restart and operated as normal. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 34,100.

33 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2013

The power steering locks and becomes almost uncontrollable in wet conditions. It appears earlier model years have been recalled or covered under warranty but not 2012.
