1 Cruise Control problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2020

Cruise control was engaged at approximately 60 mph, and I accelerated the car up an entrance ramp on to a 65 mph highway (interstate 40, durham, nc) to merge into moderate traffic heading west. The car then began accelerating on its own despite taking my foot off the gas pedal, and probably reached 70 mph. I pushed the brake pedal, which slowed the car in a shuddering manner, but did not disengage the cruise control, which continued to accelerate the vehicle. Because of the danger of hitting the car in front of us, I braked again, with a similar result. Turning off the cruise control by pushing the button on the left side of the steering wheel did not have any effect. The car continued to accelerate quickly, so I braked again and held them hard, which slowed the vehicle. On this third try, the cruise control disengaged, and I was able to turn it off. It's not been used since, so its status is unknown. No accident arose from this incident.
