general problems of the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse - part 1

Failing front exhaust pipe mounting bracket. Gm has a special coverage program (n212356540) for 2019-2020 Chevrolet Traverse which covers the repair for 15 years or 150,000 miles from the original service date. The coverage is VIN specific. My vehicle has been having this issue for two years now and my VIN is not covered. This is unfair to the consumer/Chevrolet owners who's VIN's are not listed. This is an obvious ongoing problem for many Chevrolet Traverse owners, it should be an active recall on all 2018-2023 Chevrolet Traverse owners. Especially since Chevrolet/gm is aware of the problem. Most of us are paying off our vehicles because we can't afford a new one and gm is not providing assistance for some of us who at no fault of our own are having to pay for a defect they are aware of.

The exhaust has a leak. Loud noise, rattling coming from exhaust. Smell of fumes in the cab of the vehicle. I believe there is a recall for 2018,2019,and 2021 year models for this same issue but no recall for the 2020 model.

Failed/failing hydraulic timing chain tensionors. Common issue for this engine said to be caused by poor oiling. After speaking to many shops, this is just one of the many, very common issues that occurs in this vehicle. Started on February 20th, 2026. There are no warning or check engine lights on for this issue. People who are unfamiliar with the symptoms may be driving a vehicle that may suddenly stop running without warning as there is no light illuminated on the dash. Online it states that this may be caused by not performing oil change services on time. For my particular situation, I am a preventative maintenance specialist for the past ten years. I am professionally trained and perform pm services daily. I know my Traverse has been very well maintained and serviced with premium synthetic motor oil since my ownership. And despite this, I am now having to pay a significant amount of money to have this fixed or risk the safety of myself, my family and really anyone else on the road. My vehicle is available upon request any time.

A manufacturer recall notice needs to be issued ASAP. Exhaust is leaking into passenger cab due to a defective exhaust mounting bracket. Was replaced 1 year ago at the dealer at considerable cost to vehicle owner. Now this defective part has failed a second time. A manufacturer recall notice needs to be issued ASAP. This presents a health hazard as well as financial loss due to defective manufacturing. Other years of this particular vehicle have been recalled and this defective part was repaired/replaced it is supected to replaced with the same defective oem part due to its repeated failure. It is unclear why this model year has been discriminated against. A manufacturer recall notice needs to be issued ASAP.

Cracked flex pipe. Common issue with all Traverse models/years. Needs to be addressed and recalled!.

The forward exhaust bracket weld broke causing a rattling noise and allowing exhaust fumes into the car which is incredibly dangerous.

The contact's son owns a 2020 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle made an abnormal rattling sound, and the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was initially taken to an independent mechanic who could not perform the repair. The contact was referred to another independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that a crack in the catalytic converter had caused a defect within the exhaust manifold. The contact was then informed that the failure was related to technical service bulletin number: pip5681c and was referred to the dealer for assistance. The contact had taken the vehicle to the dealer, where the contact was informed that the vehicle no longer qualified for the TSB repair due to the mileage. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and made the same assessment. The contact was then referred to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 90,100.

The vehicle just suddendenly shuts down when driven on the freeway, according to tillery Chevrolet GMC the engine cracked and needed to replaced for total of $17,291. 94.

Weld on exhaust was faulty the bracket malfunction. The exhaust system has leak and rattle with exhaust noises, causing the converter fail.

The car has 45,000 and started burning oil. The car is in brand new condition and well under mileage for an issue of such to be occurring. Took to car dealership where purchased and was told $8,500 fix!.

Exhaust started to rattle, now it is a loud clangy exhaust. Clearly a part has separated or there are holes in it. Dealership told me my car has a repair out for that for years 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023 but not my year, 2020.

July 2025 the transmission started stuttering. Took to an outside transmission shop, report showed torch converter failure.

Engine light came on couple weeks ago. Code is p0420 so I did some research and inspected the exhaust system and found the weld on the support bracket of the exhaust pipes was cracked and wore a hole between the pipe and the bracket. There are others that have the same problem with different year models Chevrolet Traverses. Mine is a 2020 Chevrolet Traverse lt.

The contact then took the vehicle to the dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the muffler was punctured and not the catalytic converter. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact then took the vehicle to a valvoline center to be diagnosed and dtc: p0420; was retrieved. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The contact stated that the vehicle was vibrating abnormally while driven with an abnormal rattling sound coming from underneath the vehicle. Upon further investigation, the contact related the failure to manufacturer's recall numbers: n212356540 and n222385510; however, the vehicle was not included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 102,000.

Unknown to some, but yesterday Saturday around 12:30 I was inspecting the speaker ports in the rear 3rd row passenger area and I noticed these square tabs that says airbags, also in the very middle of second row the same thing but in the rear I was removing one of the mouldings to see why the speakers were not playing, upon inspection there are no speakers and neither are there any form of side and or rear collision safety devices ( airbags) other than seatbelts. If that truck were in an accident say like a t-bone, or rear end collision, or side rear impact no one is guaranteed safely making out without adverse affects on their bodies and health. I'm starting to wonder if this Traverse was salvaged and or restored. Why are there no safety features in this truck?!!.

The contact owns a 2020 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated while driving 25 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated. A dealer was contacted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the catalytic convertor had failed needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and the contact was informed that there were no recalls associated with the VIN. The approximate failure mileage was 58,000.

Front exhaust pipe broken causing check engine light and vehicle to sound rough. It is an emissions issue. This has been confirmed with a dealership. The issue started around middle of March 2025 when check engine light came on.

Vehicle developed a large hole in the exhaust pipe going to front converter. Identical failure which is noted in an April 30,2023 bulletin which specifically narrowed defects down to the 2019 chevy Traverse. ( special coverage# n212356540). Dealership did repair defective exhaust section although my warranty coverage refused to cover defect. Significant safety hazard to state the least anytime a section of any exhaust component begins to deteriorate and come apart on welded sections of pipe. My vehicle has approximately 59000 miles of use and I simply cannot understand why gm refuses to reimburse my out of pocket costs related to this defect.

Car started making a “pinging” noise and gradually got worse over time. Finally today, it’s really bad so I crawl under and look to notice not one but two holes in the exhaust pipe. I noticed several recalls on other models with the same issue but not this year.

The check engine light is illuminated. The chevy app indicates there is an emission related concern regarding the catalyst system. After inspected, the catalytic converter bracket has a hole or is separating from the exhaust pipes. This causes the vehicle sound very loud during driving. Additionally the vehicle has less power during acceleration. The vehicles performance is poor and the maintenance is accelerated.

A few weeks ago, I started noticing a purring, kind of sound coming from my vehicle when I would turn it on. I took it in to chevy and they said there was a leak or a hole in the exhaust that they needed to be replaced for over $1600 and that wasn’t covered through warranty that it was normal wear and tear. My vehicle has 53,000 miles. They said that it’s common for a vehicle of over five years to have these kinds of issues. And that it wasn’t covered through my warranty. Which expires in April.

Had noticed a rattle every time when I start the vehicle. I got under and had located a broken front exhaust hanger. A few week later I noticed a different sound coming from under the vehicle. I go back to the under side and locked the exhaust flex pipe has now ripped at the front exhaust bracket. Mine being a 2020 isn't coved by the 2019 or the 2021 special coverage. Chevrolet needs to fix this issue.

Noise from under hood, took vehicle to dealer. Dealers inspection identified cracked exhaust pipes before catalytic converter. Exhaust fumes get into car cabin causing health concerns not to mention a life threatening situation for the occupants. Vehicle was under 70k miles. Seems to be an emission issue/faulty workmanship with failure in qc in weld inspection causing harm to owners.

The vehicle start stop feature is malfunctioning (I have a video) . When stopping or coming to a stop after driving through the city, at random times sometimes back to back when being stopped it goes down to 1 rpm then the auto stop feature kicks on and when it's time to depress the break to move again it malfunctions then sounds like a circular saw slicing through metal. At times you have put car in park hit engine ignition button to make it stop then wait a few seconds then start it back up. There's also a smell of strong fuel vapors coming in through the vents including defrost. Navigation stopped working ( turn by turn ) feature, also sounds as if the front end is knocking around going over speed bumps, the front right wheel has an odd rub sound that increases when accelerating. The gas also with a full tank depletes nearly within a day, and ait being a v6 should not guzzle $50 in fuel of 87 grade petrol. This thing is a rolling safety hazard. I have a wife and 6 children I transport daily. If something happens and we are injured I will sue your entire company general motors.

The exahust leaks and has noise just like all the other Traverse that have the recall, this also needs the same recall.

Purchased the 2020 Traverse on [xxx] from basswood in ft. Payne alabama. Under the guise of the salesman I was assured that the vehicle was in great shape, with no issues at all, and a very clean carfax. Well I'm new to purchasing a car via financing with a CO-signer in which he was assured the vehicle was in great shape. Well unbeknownst to us my household the car was nothing of the sort. Within a few days the start/stop malfunctioned to the point it would not restart 98% of the time without sounding like a demo saw, it's a dangerous problem and there's times we smelled fuel once we were able to restart the vehicle. The front right wheel assembly looks as if it were on fire and if that's brake dust and it has a grinding whomp whomp sound when in motion,that's really not good no wonder it's hard to stop at times. The front end sounds like drums when going over bumps, speed bumps, road imperfections etc. . On morning start-up there's an absurd amount of exhaust coming into the cabin area, the codes [p3055 and p3056] are registered from the computer of vehicle. Now the smell of fuel is blowing through all vents whenever the defrost is running or all vents are used front and rear, with the truck in motion. It was so bad today that my entire family had to pull over to a gas station and get fresh air our eyes were burning and my [xxx] son nose started to bleed. , so that's two parents and 6 children scrambling for safety. This is our only reliable vehicle other than an old 99 suburban that is hardly even road worthy anymore. I spoke with several people that have purchased vehicles and all agreed that the salesman and mostly the sales managers knew that the vehicle came from an auction and was never serviced nor inspected at the basswood dealership, which equates to them actively concealing major effects and problems with the vehicle in question. Vehicle would not start. Towed to repair shop. 350a fuse blown that controls ignition system. Pulled starter to inspect for damage. Transmission flex plate had 7 broken teeth with a tooth being lodged in the starter housing.

The contact related the failure to gm technical service bulletin number: pip5681c (exhaust leak, lean codes, rattle noise, or catalytic converter failure codes); however, the vehicle was not covered under the TSB. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and later informed the contact that the case was closed. The contact was referred to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 85,600.

The exhaust bracket on the front broke, and caused my catalytic converter to crack and have an exhaust leak. I’ve talked to different exhaust places and said it is common in the 2020 Traverses. The car is running rough.

After getting my SUV back I been notice that ticking sound while driving over 40 mph can't pin point were it coming from the dealership or anybody cannot locate it it happens with speeds. Over 40 not exxeced over 60 mph.

2020 Traverse was at chevy dealership for state inspection & emissions test, maintenance service- oil & filter change, rotate tires, check all systems, update system & computer, flush & fill all fluids in car. Chevy certified technician preformed vehicle health inspection, multi point inspection . Car was not picking up acceleration will on a 351 mile trip alone, after stopping I notice the car hood was not on correctly when opened the oil cap was not in place but was on molding, oil had been pouring out leaving engine with no oil, the technician had not replaced cap during service and had no replaced brake fluid, antifreeze coolant, washer fluid and transmission fluid. He had force closed the hood, which could have opened at any time while driving, there was oil pouring from vehicle causes hazardous driving for myself and everyone else on highway. Car has onstar coverage as well as chevy safe driver function’s, and alerts on all systems all fluid levels, tire pressure, temperature ext. Non of these alerts showed or alerted me putting my safety and the safety of others on the roads in danger. The technician in fact disarmed these systems and alerts when servicing my vehicle. Ciocca Chevrolet dealership in quakertown PA, caused permanent damage to the engine and power train system, as well as putting myself and others in serious danger. The car was towed by onstar roadside assist back to dealership where they tried to down play the severity of the damage . I refused to take back the car due to it not being drivable or safe. The service manager agreed to buy out my loan and the car is on lot for sale with tag stating ‘sold as is , no warranty” . Due to the computer system being compromised there is no data showing the service or showing the car being in distress , this issue needs to be know as driving this vehicle with out knowledge of engine damage caused from dealership failure to add all fluids during service puts driver, passenger’s and all others in danger.

My rear exhaust manifold cracked, was told there should have been have been a recall on them bc they are defective. Gm is covering 2019 and 2021 models, but not 2020 models. I had to replace my alternator at the Chevrolet dealership 6 months ago. In the last month, have had the shift to park message come up on my car and that has something to do with the transmission.

For the last year or so my car keeps making this really loud noise and it gets worse within hours/days. We have had it in 3 maybe even 4 different shops to have an exhaust fixed. One shop said that a part of it was never secured like it should have been and they fixed it. Every time we have had it fixed it does it again within a couple weeks/month. I did some research and saw a bunch of people are having the same issue with theirs.

Vehicle is current at 101,102 miles, however, the issue started to occur at 75,350 miles. It is the common issue crack in the exhaust pipe just before the flex exhaust tube due to poor welding of the bracket causing the exhaust system to rattle and leak exhaust into the cabin. The same issue has been addressed under special coverage n222385510 for 2021 vehicles, and another one was issued for 2019 Chevrolet Traverse and Buick enclave vehicles. Gm bulletin pip5681c describes the issue in detail and acknowledges that the same process was used on their 2018-2022 vehicles, but they are only covering the repair of the 2019s and 2021 vehicles. Exhaust fumes do reach inside the cabin of the vehicle especially on calm mornings that have no breeze. This is a potential carbon monoxide hazard. The is no scrape marks or damage to the undercarriage that would have caused the issue, only the heating and cooling of the exhaust system.
