Service Brakes Problems of Chevrolet Trax - part 1

Antilock breaking system.

Came out to my new 2025 chevy Trax with stabilitrac and antilock braking system faults on the dash on March 27, 2026. I immediately contacted the dealer I bought it from since it only has around 3200 miles and made an appointment (4/1/26) to bring the vehicle in. They inspected the vehicle and told me the brake master cylinder is bad and they would have to keep the vehicle since it could fail completely and I would be without brakes thus unsafe to drive. I was also told was the part was on back order and no eta on when the part would be made available. They have had the vehicle since April 1st, I was given a loaner from the dealer after having expressed my displeasure that gm would not fully cover the cost of a rental vehicle while I wait on a critical part of the failing braking system that they are failing to provide their dealer. Luckily the braking system never failed prior to diagnosis.

The contact owns a 2026 Chevrolet Trax. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the message "brake system failure" was displayed. The contact turned off the vehicle, waited for a while, and then restarted the vehicle. After restarting the vehicle, the message "steering system not engaged" was displayed. The contact turned off the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who informed the contact that 3 diagnostic codes were retrieved, indicating a braking system and steering failure. However, the third failure was not provided. The dealer stated that a software update might be needed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. A case was opened with the manufacturer. The failure mileage was approximately 156,000.

The contact owns a 2018 Chevrolet Trax. The contact stated that while driving 20 mph and attempting to slow down, the brake pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to respond. The contact used the parking brake to slow and stop the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was driven to the residence. An independent mechanic was contacted to diagnose the vehicle. A dealer was not notified of the issue. The vehicle was not yet diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 135,000.

The turbo charger failed suddenly without a prior display of a warning light and was replaced by an independent service center in June 2025. I received a letter from gm in November 2025 stating there was a known "condition" that may cause the turbo charger to need replacing but a recall was not issued. On 1/22/26 the vehicle suddenly went into "limp mode" while driving. The throttle body injection unit, engine coolant water outlet, and coolant were replaced. The coolant had been topped off on 1/20/26. On 1/27/26 the vehicle began shuddering and lost power while I was driving on the highway. As I attempted to get to a gas station off of the next exit, it intermittently lost power and began smoking under the hood. It seemed to be overheating but there is no temperature gauge on the display. I had it towed to my service center again. At that time, four spark plugs and an ignition coil were replaced. After these repairs, I have continued to have significant power issues, the engine warning light has come back on, and the "service brake assist" warning light has come on. Additionally, the instrument panel frequently goes blank or displays what can best be described as "static" and the a/c and heat do not work, making it difficult to defrost and defog the windshield. The wiper fluid will not come out even though the reservoir is full. Due to prohibitive diagnostic fees at the dealership, which I was told would not be waived or reimbursed, I have continued to utilize my independent service center to maintain basic drivability. My service center has advised me that the engine may fail completely within a short time frame. I have reported these issues to the manufacturer and have been assigned a case number. I'm concerned that this may indicate a potential safety defect and/or premature engine failure affecting my vehicle and others of the same model. I'm submitting this complaint for documentation and safety tacking.

Service brake assist message appeared on the dash, brakes got soft , vehicle would not stop. Check engine light came on. Dealership reported no codes were reported but the power brake booster vacuum sensor & hose assembly needs replaced due to a sensor malfunction. Say it is not covered under any safety/service bulletin so we need to pay for it. Other make and models are covered under 17-na-314, special coverage adjustment n182202780, product safety recall n202300860. All similar issues but none for the 2018 chevy Trax. Feel this is a huge issue as it is a direct issue with safety. Brakes are a critical part of safety when on the road.

The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Trax. The contact stated that while driving 70 mph, while the roads were clear, dry, and the weather was good, the engine seized, and the vehicle lost motive power and decelerated to 55 mph. The contact pulled over to the side of the road, and the brake pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to respond and continued driving forward. While driving at 50 mph, the failure reoccurred. The engine and stabili-trak illuminated after the vehicle came to a complete stop. The local dealer was contacted regarding loaner vehicles on two occasions. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was scanned, and dtc: tcm u0101 and p0700 were retrieved. The manufacturer was contacted, and the contact was referred to the local dealer and the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 68,000.

I was driving on the highway going around a ramp when I went to press on the brakes to slow down the pedal just went to the floor and the car would not slow down, causing me to go off the road. My insurance company did an inspection and said the accident was caused by engine failure and won’t cover damage. Gm did inspection said it wasn’t their fault but won’t release their inspection report.

The manual parking brake system (hand lever) failed to adequately restrain the vehicle when fully engaged. The component is available for inspection upon request. My safety was put at risk because the vehicle failed to remain securely parked with the parking brake fully engaged. If parked on an incline, this defect creates a risk of the vehicle rolling and causing an accident. Additionally, a fully functional parking brake is a critical emergency braking backup system, which is compromised by this malfunction. I have not gotten to a dealer to get it checked yet. There was a warning light eventually. After a couple of times, I pushed on the accelerator once I realized the parking brake was on. I turned it off. It was only when I noticed it was a bit jankey when attempting to reverse is when I noticed it.

Breaks lock down when driving. Had multiple things replaced and it still does it. Said they don’t know what could be still causing the problem.

The contact rented a 2025 Chevrolet Trax. The contact stated that, while her husband was driving at 25 mph on a decline and attempting to slow the vehicle upon approaching a curve in the road, the brake pedal depressed all the way to the floorboard but failed to bring the vehicle to a complete stop. As a result, the driver briefly lost control of the vehicle, only coming to a complete stop after colliding with the vehicle ahead. The air bags did not deploy. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic but instead returned to the rental company. The contact was unaware whether the vehicle was repaired. A police report was filed, and no injuries were reported. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 14,700.

The vehicle shut off completely while driving twice in 24 hours. Lost all power, brakes locked up, first incident on July 26, 2025. Vehicle did restart after and was able to drive home. Would not start, had no power on July 26, 2025. Tow truck came, jump started the vehicle. I pulled out of my driveway to take it to the dealer for service of issue, vehicle shut off as soon as I pressed the brake to stop at a stop sign and lost all power again. Brakes also locked up again after the vehicle lost power. Tow truck transported vehicle to the dealer from there.

I got a code for the electronic brake control module, and my front brakes kept locking up. Took it to the dealership and they kept telling me that it’s fine. My safety was put at risk when I was going 60 down the interstate and the brakes locked up. The service stabilitrak light came on too.

I am unable to control my vehicle. Something in front end of vehicle pushes and pulls the vehicle from left to right without being able to regain control. Loud popping and clunking while turning. . Braking has also been a majoir issue along with suspension/steering issues. I would greatly appreciate these things to be fixed immediately beings there has been a recall years ago and I was never notified!.

The contact related the failure to an unknown recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. An air duct above the brake pedal came loose from the heater and dropped down over the pedals. My wife said she could not get the car to stop at an intersection. The car rolled to a stop in the middle of the road and she could not get it to go as the accelerator was also blocked. A police officer pushed it off the road.

Brake system malfunctioned. Brakes making horrible grinding noise at 25000 miles. Took to dealership under warranty and was told "that is just the sound that gm brakes make" and they refused warranty repair. Assured noise wouldnt worse, but continued. Paid to have brakes replaced and the same exact noise continues today. Brake fluid leaked everywhere and totally disabled the entire braking system while driving on the interstate. When the brakes went out, I loss power and it was difficult to steer. Tried receiving assistance from Chevrolet on many occasions until I gave up car flashed a message suggesting vehicle was experiencing loss of power while driving down interstate, cleared the message and vehicle power remains weak. Code suggested turbo was going out. Car honks 2-3-4 times while in park only 5 minutes. Oil has to be changed constantly. Last oil change took 2 weeks before now having only 81% oil life. Forward collision warning warns when nothing is in front or around you. Lane keeping assistance cuts in and out and doesn't always work. Backup camera shows upside down often, and distorted. Ecm warranty reset has been completed. Lane departure warning signals hazard where there is none and sometimes lane keeping assistance disallows me to remain in the middle of my lane so I have to cut it off. Interior and exterior lights and radio have remained on for hours after locking vehicle and going inside my house.

My wife was driving to work and a car cut in front of her stopped for some weird reason on a green light and with the automatic braking the car stopped and was driving 20mph to 0 mph this was not I deal for the emergency braking and this should slow your car but not violently brake my daughter could have been seriously hurt thank god I have a good car seat.

The contact owns a 2024 Chevrolet Trax. The contact stated while driving 65 mph, the brakes failed to respond as needed. The contact also stated that while attempting to open the doors, the contact heard an abnormal sound and the radio independently activated. The vehicle was driven to the dealer, and it was diagnosed that the software needed to be updated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 34,000.

I am not sure of what actual component(s) failed, but I do know that a brake line that had braided steel broke and spewed brake fluid failed- this line comes off the master cylinder to abs module. Mechanic attempted replacement and there is still no pressure in the brake line. Mechanic believes it is the brake booster now that caused the line failure to occur. The vehicle and components are available for inspection. What happened was that when I was driving on a city road at 35 mph, a vehicle in front of me was driving reckless and when I changed lanes I approached a traffic signal that changed to yellow and when I went to slow I felt a pop in the brake pedal and the pedal went all the way to the floor and I was unable to stop when the light changed to red and rolled through the intersection. I was able to finally stop approximately 300 feet after applying the brakes. There were no warning indicators or lamps that illuminated prior to this occurring and as a result of the brake failure a collision was narrowly avoided.

Brakes have been known to fail. I have to press brake serval times to gain brake control.

My car is only at around 37,7000 miles. My I have only had it since it was around 15,000 miles. My battery has died at least 4 times due to my alternator having problems charging. My brakes have also gone out on me at one point in the beginning. My battery is now trash and so is my alternator.

Electrical system (sound system, bluetooth, graphics, and backup camera), and automatic braking - available for inspection screen glitches using apple car play (wireless and wired), and in general (have pictures and videos) backup camera is a fishbowl and stays on when driving at 45 mph or at any speed (have video) car electrical system stays on when doors are shut, engine off and key removed for prolonged amounts of time (have video) does not brake, only flashes and chimes when driving between 5-50mphs - if I was to get into an accident and the car did not stop itself driving in the range it's supposed to work then that will be an even larger issue at hand. Noticed sound issue when sitting in the car with sales person on the phone with onstar and didn't think of it being an issue, and they noticed it to. Then the issue kept going on and more things were happening so, I brought to the dealership on 06/05/2024 for the first time for mentioned issues and told they could not duplicate because the car was built by robots. Returned to the dealership on 06/14/2024 for a second time and was advised that they would have the car for a week - was spoken to like I was undereducated and belittled by staff. Told to not get confused when signing paperwork for loaner. Car has been returned as of 6/15/2024, and was advised that they didn't do much and the sound system was due to the settings being adjusted and not at factory setting 0 (what is the point of the settings if you cannot adjust the sound, it's been like this for decades now - have on invoice). Overall, I am highly upset with this dealership and car manufacturer because although it may seem like pointless electrical issues - if something else malfunctions it could be detrimental. Lastly, the dealership could not comprehend the videos, or photos I sent and I could not figure out how to explain something that wasn't hard to figure out. I don't appreciate being blamed twice now for issues that I did not cause.

Sitting at a stoplight on a slight hill, with my foot on the break, my car started rolling backwards. When it started rolling, I pressed harder on the break and it kept rolling. I had to slam and put the car in park for it to stop. After I got it stopped, I put it back in drive and then it was okay. There had to be something wrong with my break it to do that. I have to drive long distance and I’m afraid I’m gonna have problems again. Just thank god there was not a car behind me or I would’ve been in an accident and my fault. I have never had an accident. That was my fault.

While in operación vehicle brakes apple themselves forcing the motor to work against itself. This has happened múltiple times now. The vehicle has 22000 miles on it. It was at blvd. GMC in long beach CA. We were told that the problems was a low battery that cause the computer to act out with brakes. Battery was replaced by them. 1 week later it happens again. Now blvd. GMC wants to do a brake fluid service and replace the computar. I am 75 years old and this is a huge safety concern for me. Thank you.

I was driving at 50mph when I lost power to my brakes. The brakes still worked well enough to get home, but I had to slow down well in advance of every turn and push hard on the brakes. The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Trax. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle did not immediately stop, and the braking distance was extended. The contact stated that the rear braking system had malfunctioned and did not properly activate while depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that rear brake calipers were inoperable. The rear brake calipers were oiled but the failure continued to occur. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 55,000.

We have noticed that the check engine does not illuminate when starting or even with active codes in vehicle have brought this to the dealers attention several time to not be acknowlegded the rear brakes lock up when you touch the brake pedal have brought this up several time to not be addressed the vehicle when driving at speeds greater that 55 mph the vehicle goes sideways and scares you have brought up several times to not be addressed the forward collision does not work the vehicle has active codes and the check engine should illuminate and when take in for service we ask why and are just ignored all these problems started 2 days after buying the vehicle in September of 2023. In addition to the transmission leaking, was told however that it is not a big enough issue to be covered under warrenty. These have all been addressed with dealership as well as manufacturer, and as of today 09/20/2025 these issues have not been resolved.

Going at speeds 60-70, transmission slips and is jerky, pulsating symptoms. Unsure if transmission slipping or brake malfunction. Going at speeds lower, very hard gear shifts. Using adaptive cruise control at speeds 60-70, car slammed on brakes for no apparent reason and remained using the break, would let off (clear and wide open in front of me).

This is the 5th time my car has broken down with this problem, the brakes lock up on the highway and the "stabilitrak" service light comes on. (suspension) this time there was a gasoline tanker right behind me. If this man hadn't been such an experienced tanker driver, I would now be a bloody spot on the highway, my kids would be without their mom, my husband widowed and my grandchildren would have to be happy just hearing stories about me. I would be in the local grave yard, six feet under. So far, I have had a new fuse block, master cylinder, coil pack with plugs, abs module, pressure valve and a new brake switch. That was as of 2 weeks ago, my car broke down again last night, as reported above. My car, which I just made a payment of $635. 00, and is just now at 51,000 miles is less than 3 years old. I am truly afraid to drive it, I don't know who to contact at Chevrolet or GMC there has to be some kind of recourse or are they not able to fix the brakes on a car???.

This is the either 5th or 6th complaint for this vehicle. I am making after almost 6 months, most of which my car has been in the dealership. The brakes locked up in the parking lot at my bank, I noticed the signs that it was about to lock up and pulled into the parking lot before it threw a code. I was in fact on the phone with the dealership when it happened. They sent their tow truck and as of today the car has now been in their possession for 3 weeks. I got a call from the dealership telling me they are replacing the brake booster. This car now has over 2,700. 00 in new parts, this doesn't count the labor cost. This includes, coil pack, plugs, master cylinder, fuse box, abs module and related pressure valve and brake switch. The manager said they are running out of ideas and parts to replace. When I asked him what happens if this still doesn't fix it, he said that that situation was to unheard of to consider. I pointed out that if the dealership can't find the problem then GMC needs to step up because I still have 3 years left to pay for this car and that eventually there either have already been others who've died or there will be in the future, because unless this car is defective, it can't be the only one like this. I wonder how many people have died from this and it just wasn't caught that this problem caused it. I also explained that my next step would be to find a lawyer.
