The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Venture. While driving approximately 5 mph on normal road conditions, the driver attempted to place the gear shifter into park. She noticed that the gear shifter was extremely loose and unable to shift gears. The gear selector and shift operation failures occurred intermittently. The contact stated that the failure was related to the gear shift cable. The gear shifter was temporarily repaired and the vehicle resumed normal operation. The vehicle has not been inspected by an authorized dealer. The failure and current mileages were 83,000.
The vehicle was left running and a child reached to the front seat and pulled the gear shift. The vehicle was put into reverse without the brake pedal being applied, the vehicle slowly rolled backwards and crashed into a building. A small amount of damage was done to the vehicle. I sat in the rivers seat and was indeed able to move the gear shift from park to reverse without applying the brake. This safety feature is faulty.
The gear is suppose to lock for safety, and only be applied when the brake is applied as child safety protection. Consumer's child got into the vehicle, placed it into gear, and crashed the vehicle, nearly injuring several children on a playground.
