36 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/16/2023

Took the car in for service to simi valley Chevrolet on 8/16/2023 due to the check engine light illuminated on dashboard. They determined that the egr valve had internally shorted so they unplugged it so as not to take down the rest of the system and placed a special order for the valve. It has now been over one year and they still don't have the replacement part. The car runs rough and occasionally stalls and sputters. I'm concerned that the car could stall while driving and is unsafe.

37 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2023

I picked up my vehicle from wasler polar Chevrolet on 7/26/2023 after they claimed to have "repaired" my vehicle. After receiving my vehicle, about 5 miles away from the dealership, my vehicle suddenly quit keeping up with traffic, and lost * power equipment. Brakes, steering and acceleration were all unresponsive. The vehicle almost sent me under a semi-trailer, but I quickly forced the steering wheel to the left and engaged the emergency brake, which successfully stopped the car. The vehicle bricked itself, and had to be towed back to the dealership.

38 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2023

I was driving in clear weather (with my ice engine as propulsion) when an engine warning fault light appeared on my dash and the vehicle slowed to 5mph with no response from the throttle pedal. I pulled into a parking lot, had the vehicle towed to an independent service shop, and had them check the codes. There were a dozen faults stored, but they found the 'non walk home' fuse had blown, and faults pointed to the egr valve as having faulty electronics. They could not find an egr valve for sale so they unplugged the egr valve and replaced the fuse, which allowed the engine to drive normally again, but with the check engine light on at all times. I called my local chevy dealer and they told me the egr I needed was part number 12691147 for $243, but they were backordered and there were dozens of people in front of me for their dealer alone. Now, 11 months later, I'm still waiting on the part, I have found hundreds of other Volt owners online with the same issue, and the part number has been changed by gm to 19436113, with a price increase of 1100% to $2642. And the part is still not available because of "high demand" on a car that was discontinued five years ago.

39 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2023

Component: dealer said its the becm. Lots of them failing, check any chevy Volt forum. What happened: driving on road, battery drive turns off and it switches to gas engine, "reduced propulsion" message pops up, then gas engine quits and 'shift to park' message pops up. No electric motor, no gas engine, coasting, then stuck in road, traffic piling up behind me. After half-hour or so of blocking traffic and me trying to restart the car, electric eventually 'reset' and it worked fine again, so I drove it the several miles home, and the charging system connected fine. Next morning, charging system said it was broken, and car would not start. Towed to dealer. Safety risk: both battery drive and gas engine turned fully off while traveling on road - no power, and steering/brakes hard to use. Luckily was in slow lane on local road near corner with traffic light, so others were 'prepared' to slow down, avoided my stopped car, and were able to get around. Prior symptoms: within the prior week, battery drive switched to gas engine with 'reduced propulsion' popup, but then it switched back to battery drive after stopping and restarting. Several times noticed the 'battery charge' indicator would change color and the estimated mileage remaining would bounce between 0 and 47.

40 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2023

My forward proximity sensors would randomly trigger. One day my ambient air temperature went haywire, checked for codes and had high Voltage reading ambient air, brake booster trouble. After further investigation found that the x100(female) connector had water intrusion causing shorts across the pins showing Voltage to drop across other pins further sending false or incorrect signals to the computer. The connector was thoroughly cleaned and aired out. Now wrapped intensively with a lot of electrical tape in hopes to prevent water from getting in and causing Voltage that range from 5v-14v from shorting across terminals and causing false activation.

41 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/12/2022

Vehicle suddenly stopped while driving , engine light came on and on board charging system maintenance showed on dash display , I was able to restart it and take to the dealer for diagnosis they said that the becm needs replacement at the cost of $2500. 00 and that it is common on this vehicle ,this issue is a safety problem gm has issued a tbs for this defect recognizing it as an existing defect, this would cause a tragedy if it occurs while driving a on the highway ,since the car would loose power and could cause a catastrophic accident . The cost of the repair for a known defective part is unfair to the consumer and should be the manufacturer responsibility to bear the cost for safety .

42 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/26/2022

While on a road trip, we were traveling on a rural highway at roughly 55 mph. We received a warning message on the dashboard stating that "propulsion power was reduced" and the engine began running rough, with surging noticeable based on throttle position. We also noted that engine temperature was rising above what was typical for the vehicle. The vehicle was able to maintain highway speed, and we were able to limp the vehicle to a safe location. Based on a web search, we were able to diagnose the issue (a failed egr valve) as well as a way to limp the vehicle to a local dealership. They made a change that allowed us to limp home safely (unplug the egr valve's electrical connector and replace the blown fuse under the hood). The vehicle was taken to a chevy dealership when we made it home. The failure we had diagnosed was confirmed, and the component was replaced. The repair was not covered under warranty, and cost a significant sum to repair (1139. 91). Additionally, this appears to be a very, very common failure for this make and model of vehicle- to the point where there is so much demand for this repair to be performed that these components (the egr valve specifically) are difficult to obtain from chevy. Additionally, the failure mode is such that when the egr valve fails, it pulls excessive currents, and blows a fuse that also controls a number of important engine cooling components, leaving engine cooling significantly compromised. If we had been going faster, or if the weather was warmer, or if the load inside the vehicle was heavier, it would have been easy to overheat the gas engine and leave us stranded. I am concerned about the incidence rate of the failure, (based on online reports) the relative small number of miles on the vehicle when the failure occurred, (~57k) and the possible knock-on effect of the failure of the gas engine's ability to cool itself due to a relatively unrelated failure.

43 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2022

Vehicle suddenly lost power and displayed shift to park on display. Vehicle will not respond or display any status other than shift to park. Vehicle towed to dealership. Diagnosis of their mechanic is failed becm module. Vehicle was brought to dealership 3yrs ago with infotainment center problems. Infotainment software was updated but problem persisted. 2 years ago it was brought to dealership with complaint of intermittent inability to charge propulsion battery. Sunshine Chevrolet stated their mechanic could not diagnose issue so it was not covered under warranty. I demonstrated intermittent charging issue by plugging vehicle into dealership charger in front of showroom. I was at that time allowed to leave without paying diagnostic charge. 1½ years ago while car was still under warranty car failed to start. Called dealership. They stated it could be 12volt battery. I purchased and replaced battery at dealership. Car started but intermittent charging issue and intermittent infotainment issue continued. Gm is refusing to cover becm replacement saying car is now out of 8yr warranty time frame.

44 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2022

My experience is proof for the investigation on “loss of motive power, including a stall, reduced power state, and/or a no-start condition due to the battery energy control module (becm). ” my safety and the safety of others were affected because the reduced engine propulsion caused me to drive at a max speed of around 50 mph, and eventually the car left my stranded a few weeks later when it would not start at all in a parking lot. The gas engine would run at an extremely high rpm to make up for the failure of battery propulsion. The dealer covered the work under warranty. The work was performed during the pandemic chip shortage in 2022 and my car was at the dealership for two months from about August to October. The check engine light would come on sporadically before the problem started, and when the failure would occur, I would get a “propulsion reduced” message in the driver screen and the gas engine would kick on to an extremely high rpm even when the car should have been running on battery. Accelerating from a stop to a normal speed would sound like you are flooring down the accelerator to get on a highway on-ramp. I no longer have the paperwork to confirm this, but it was performed at the fort collins (colorado) dellenbach Chevrolet dealer, it may be possible for me to get the paperwork, but I no longer live in colorado. The process went all the way up to corporate Chevrolet before the warranty was honored, and I was compensated with company points.

45 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2022

When attempting to power down the car, a message, “action required, shift to park” appears and car will not power down. After repeated attempts, sometimes requiring 10 or more, by re-starting the car and attempting to power down, it has eventually powered down. This problem is intermittent and the car will power down successfully repeated times, and then do it’s “shift to park” refusal to power down. There are hundreds of complaints on the gm Volt owners’ forum and even a technical service bulletin no. 19-na-206 dated February 2020 (maybe even more recent, but that’s the latest one I know of). The service bulletin also includes the chevy blazer, malibu, traverse and GMC acadia (which, I understand, there is now a class action suit in that regard). If the car will not power down, it could drain the battery and leave the driver stranded, as well as making the car unable to be locked, which could also be a safety issue.

46 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/14/2022

Action required shift to park message comes up on the dash after starting the vehicle & shifting into gear out of park. The message goes away when shifted back into park, but the vehicle doesn't respond when shifted into gear. Reverse, neutral, drive, low - none will engage. I had to repeat the process of starting the vehicle 28 times before it would operate as it should. Start vehicle to view application message comes up when in park & trying to shut the vehicle off & will not power down until the driver door is opened. I worried that I'd be stranded if this continued to happen & took the vehicle to brad deery motors in maquoketa, IA for repair on 4/14/22. I paid $736. 71 & the invoice states: 106128 shift to park, diag, intermittent open in the shift park solenoid, replaced shift park solenoid and jumper harness, tested working properly. I brought the vehicle home & had the same messages appear on 4/19/22. I have since read a forum on the Volt & understand that this has been a common issue & found a service bulletin: 19-na-206, but wondering if there is an actual recall. I plan to contact gm regarding this issue.

47 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2022

I have a 2016 Volt bought from nyc and I am the first owner currently residing in TX. My Volt currently has mileage of 30,020 but this propulsion power will be reduce error has been shown since last 100 miles or so, my commune is usually under 5 miles a day so I rarely use gas however recently due to work I have to commune pretty far for a week and relied more on gas and this error popup during on of the commune. (it slowed my car down significantly while on highway and eventually stop with message on the console says engine offline) with the following error codes found: p0031 p0054 p0030 p0135 p0403 p0405 p0443 p0458 p0489 p0597 p0598 p06da p06db p0ac4 p0030 this car barely has much gas mileages as it was primarily on electric, but this failure on highway comes suddenly.

48 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2021

There is a “shift to park” message on the driver information screen when attempting to shut off vehicle. I don’t know if the vehicle is still in gear and will move (forward or back) when I think it is in park. I have not had it in for inspection/repair yet, as it is a recent occurrence that is becoming increasingly frequent. This started happening around 11/15/2021.

49 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/31/2021

Vehicle shift to park warning , does not go in reverse or forward , shifter moves but it does not detect is in park mode , therefore it doesn't reset battery status or able to drive in forward or reverse.

50 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2021

Any time that the vehicle is turned off, a warning message displays on the hud saying "action required: shift to park". This occurs whenever the vehicle is turned off, despite the gearshift already being in park.

51 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2021

When parking vehicle a "shift to park" error appears on the dash and vehicle will not turn off for some time. This is an intermittent issue that seems to be getting more frequent as time goes on. Vehicle can be stolen if issue is unnoticed.

52 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/06/2021

Get "shift to park" error when trying to shut off ignition. Shift lever is in park but not recognized by cars electronics or switches or? this prevents car from being shut off -this is more than just an irritant. When you are stopped somewhere and can't turn off your ignition, you are in a really serious predicament! gm has had this problem on many electronic hybrids since 2016 models and will not or cannot fix! one google of chevy Volt "shift to park" will show hundreds of complaints (many to your dept. ) and no help in forcing gm to resove problem !.

53 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2021

1. An error appears "shift to park" when parking. The car does not recognize that it is shifted to park thus it continues to run even when positioned on park. A running vehicle that cannot be turned off and can run on gas is a considerable hazard. This is an extremely common issue with the 2016 Volt.

54 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2021

Getting the "action needed shift to park" warning intermittently when parked and attempting to turn off car to exit. Unable to shut down vehicle when occurs.

55 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2020

The vehicle issues a message to move the gear shifter into park (shift to park) message even when it is already in park. The vehicle will not engage nor will it enable the driver to turn the vehicle off which results in unsafe driving circumstances and strands the drive in untenable situations. This is known in social media as the "shift-to-park" problem with Volt and other gm vehicles while gm is hush-hush about the issue. There absolutely needs to be a recall issued for all affected vehicles as this is clearly a manufacturer design issue given all of the problems drivers are having. It starts as an intermittent problem and continues to get worse over time with out any warning.

56 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2020

This is an update to my original complaint #:11299056 for un-commanded acceleration on 1/13/2020. The chevy dealership worked with gm corporate engineers and were unable to duplicate the problem after several days. The returned the car and blamed it on the floor mat. This is not likely since the mat is a oem heavy rubber mat and the accelerator pedal does not rest on the floor board. Since the car was returned and driving for weeks, I noticed the battery range will not charge more than 49 miles of electrical charge when it often charged up into the 50-60 mile range prior to the incident. I've been driving the car in slower heavy traffic lately and this driving style often increases electric mileage range after a full nights charge. It will not do so anymore even though the economy management screen indicate maximum range economy of over 250 mpg. I'm a retired gas turbine mechanic and I know a problem when I experience one. I suspect that a battery cell may have had an uncontrolled discharge and is no longer able to accept a recharge. I have relayed this information to the dealer. No response yet.

57 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2020

When putting shifter to park, the action required messages is shown shift to park issue. The car will effectively not turn off. You'll be unable to lock the car and the lights will stay on for a few minutes. Worse yet, it is intermittent although it generally gets worse over time.

58 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2019

The car shows a message on the instrument cluster that says shift to park even though the gear shift lever is already in park. This failure to detect when the gear shift lever is moved to park prevents the car from shutting off and locking. Sometimes continuously wiggling the gear shift and repeatedly shifting to other gear positions and back to park can sometimes get the vehicle to recognize it is in park. This situation occurs intermittently without a pattern. Very frustrating. And dangerous.

59 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2019

Warning about airbag system not working correctly and told to bring car to dealer within 1 day. Car was in motion on city street with my son in front. I don't know exact parts but I brought it to chevy and they refused to pay for fix (so the car is still there while I appeal). It was something about the system in the seat and possibly dash that controls the airbag.

60 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2019

Sensor does not recognize when car is in park. Continues to run and will not turn off when in park. Error message displayed is "shift to park" even when in park. This is a safety issue because car will not disengage or turn off. This occurs frequently.

61 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2019

This vehicle has a shift to park message that been seen on many gm vehicles. Some of the owner sites I have been to say that this is covered under warranty. I have not been so lucky with gm. The dealer did cover 1 repair of this problem but now says I have to pay. The problem has returned and persists. A shift to park message is displayed on the dash after the car is in park and will not shutdown. I have attached all the documentation that I have.

62 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2019

When I put the car in park and try to turn it off, I frequently get an error on the gauge display that says "action required, shift to park. " this is very frustrating. When this error happens, I'm unable to power off the car or lock the doors. I turn the car back on, jiggle the shifter or move it into drive and back to park, and then try turning the car off again. Sometimes I have to go through this process 5 or more times before the car will power down. This error happens about half the time that I use my car, which makes it a daily problem. I bought the car used in oct 2019, and the previous owner also had the problem but I don't know when it started for him.

63 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/29/2019

When the driver attempts to power down the car, the driver receives an error that the car must be shifted to park before turning off even though the car is in park. As a result the car may not be turned off. Repeated attempts and "playing" with the shifter may or may not resolve the problem.

64 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2019

My electric car would not turn off and I received the error message "action required: shift to park" on the driver display . I would have to play with the gear selector multiple times sometimes it would take 20 minutes just to turn the vehicle off. Visiting other forums, this is a common issue as it is dangerous to be stranded not being able to turn off your car.

65 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2019

Vehicle air condition stopped working while driving, check engine light came on. Message from onstar reads: an issue with the lithium-ion battery in your 2016 Chevrolet Volt has been detected. Please service your vehicle within 1 day.

66 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2019

All vehicle systems are not registering that the vehicle is in park when the shifter is in the park position. The instrument cluster gear indicator registers the vehicle as in park, but when attempting to power down the vehicle an error message occurs directing the driver to shift the vehicle into park. When exiting the vehicle the doors will not lock.

67 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2018

Tl- the contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated while driving at 55 mph, the vehicle lost all motive power to the vehicle. No warning lights illuminated during the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 13,000. VIN not available. Hk.

68 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/23/2018

Intermittent problem where the center display console goes blank on starting the car and is completely unresponsive. This displays vital information such as location, charge capacity, climate controls, etc. Could not find a way to reset this. It corrects itself after the car is off for a bit. This is the second time this has happened in two days. This is for case id number 10872363.

69 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2016

Tl the contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that the back-up camera was malfunctioning and the front console would not work if other services were being used. The contact had to turn off and restart the vehicle to get the console to work again. The vehicle was taken to reliable Chevrolet (800 n central expy, richardson, TX 75080, (972) 201-9240) where they re-flashed the module and changed the camera; however, the failure recurred and the vehicle would shut off when parked. The vehicle was a hybrid and the battery was depleted. The contact was concerned about the carbon monoxide level in her garage. The vehicle was getting more and more difficult to shut off and the contact had to wait several minutes to make sure it finally shut off. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where they stated that they would contact the manufacturer and call back. The failure mileage was 5,000.
