1 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2026

Experiencing intermittent propulsion system failure with multiple simultaneous warning messages on 2017 Chevrolet Volt at approximately 59,000 miles. Warnings displayed: - "propulsion power reduced" message - "check tire pressure monitoring system" (false alert - all tires properly inflated and recently replaced) - multiple dashboard warning lights including exclamation point indicators - vehicle exhibits abnormal driving characteristics pattern: issue occurs intermittently while driving. Vehicle can be restarted and may operate normally afterward, then fault returns unpredictably. Safety concern: this matches documented battery energy control module (becm) failure pattern referenced in gm investigation n232432680/pe23022 and customer satisfaction program 17228 recall n172096420 for reduced propulsion power in 2016-2018 Volts. Review of owner complaints shows other 2017 Volt owners experiencing sudden complete loss of propulsion while driving at highway speeds, creating dangerous situations requiring evasive action by other drivers. Risk: loss of propulsion power while driving with dependent passengers creates serious crash risk. Vehicle is used for daily transportation of minor children. Request: vehicle exhibits known defect pattern but manufacturer has not extended recall coverage. Request investigation into whether recall should be expanded to cover additional affected vehicles.

Failure Date: 10/09/2025

My egr system caused a check engine light. P0401 this is an extremely well documented issue on gen2 Volts, especially 2017 models. Simply searching "egr" on the Volt subreddit or forums returns hundreds of related threads. This issue can lead to a clogged egr valve, causing further damage. A temporary resolution is unplugging the egr valve, which I have not yet done. But this leaves the cel illuminated, and without daily scanner, I wouls not know if other issues arise, causing a significant safety hazard.

3 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2025

I was attempting to purchase this vehicle from payless used car sales in anchorage alaska. I noticed odometer discrepancies between the mechanic reported odometer in 2022 and the present odometer in 2025. The 2022 reported odometer was 60000, and now in 2025 it is 47000. When I made this concern to the salesman he asked me to leave. I left and won’t consider purchasing from this dealership in the future.

4 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2025

I am submitting this complaint regarding a recurring and potentially hazardous issue in my Chevrolet Volt 2017. The vehicle frequently displays a “shift to park” warning message even when the gear shifter is correctly in the park position. This malfunction prevents the car from shutting off properly, posing both safety and operational concerns. This issue is widely reported among Chevrolet Volt owners, and general motors has acknowledged it in technical service bulletin (TSB 19-na-206). Despite this, no formal recall has been issued to ensure a permanent solution for affected drivers. My Volt currently has 138000miles, and although it is outside of the Voltec warranty period, this is clearly a manufacturer defect—not a result of normal wear and tear. The problem affects the safe operation of the vehicle and may lead to battery drain, inability to power down the car, and driver confusion. I strongly urge the national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA) to investigate this issue and consider initiating a recall to protect drivers and ensure accountability. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

5 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2025

Becm is broken. Not covered under special warranty but have been told the pzev warranty would cover it. Dealer & gm will not even discuss covering it. This should not be a VIN specific fix as the part is identical in all 2016-2018 chevy Volts.

6 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2025

When moving the shifter to the "p" position after parking, the car will refuse to turn off with the message on the dash: "action needed: shift to park". Shifter is in park position but car will not recognize this and does not turn off. The issue can sometimes be resolved by pressing the shifter knob button repeatedly, or by pulling the shifter all the way back to drive and forth to park multiple times until the message is cleared. This happens about 4/10 times that I drive, there is currently a bulletin posted by chevy for a fix. However, the fix is only covered under a "warranty" and the chevy repair center at the dealership quoted $400 to complete the repair out of warranty.

7 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2025

Propulsion power reduced and car had trouble breaking and would stall for a moment. Will not let me use the ev range even though the ev battery is at fully charge.

8 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/06/2024

Been having issues with the dealership sierra chevy of monrovia. Brake fluid light came on. My car has been at the dealer for over two months now in counting. Closer to 3 months. First time was in July 24, 2024 for a check engine light. Fast forward to today Nov 19th, 2025. The car has been back at the dealer for the same issue the brake fluid light. Its now almost past 2 weeks. I have talked to the service manager and advisor a week ago. They told me they are having issues finding where the leak is coming from after having my vehicle there the past month. So I told them it was fine for the mechanic to drive the vehicle and figure it out. Now its almost another week and the service manager and advisor are not responding to my calls and texts. Left the service manager 2 voicemails already. Please help me get my car fixed and back to me. Service manager told me he would help me out with a rental since its a reoccurring issues . No communication from the dealership at all. No one is responding. After they claim to have fixed my vehicle the issue came back in less than a week. Dropped my car at the dealership on Nov 6th, 2024. Scared my vehicle's brakes will fail! its still under warranty. Dont want the car back till its fixed properly. Just want my vehicle to be fixed.

9 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2024

Egr valve failed while driving on the freeway. Loss power. Check engine light on. Propulsion power reduced. It is safety and emissions related.

10 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2024

Egr valve short circuit caused f3fuse to blow causing engine light to go on and propulsion reduced power warning. The f3 fuse affects 4-5 other systems.

11 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2024

Three incidents in the last few weeks. My 2017 chevy Volt today has about 84,000 miles. First incident, while driving on an interstate at about 50 mph I suddenly lose ability to accelerate. There was some beeping, dashboard turns yellow, I get a low fuel warning and I cannot accelerate. I pull over on interstate. Re-start vehicle and car restarts. Second incident, driving about 20 mph leaving a neighborhood. I have 4 passengers, all kids. The same exact error happens. I’m unable to accelerate though I’m pushing down on gas, fuel light turns yellow. Low fuel light. I pull over. I restart vehicle. Car starts normally. Car goes into shop. Chevy dealership says it’s the catalytic converter. About a week later, 3rd incident. Entering highway at about 60 mph, trying to accelerate and merge into traffic doing 70 mph. I cannot accelerate past 60 mph, I hear the beeps, fuel gauge turns yellow, low fuel warning. Check engine light turns on. Several days prior to this, I had a low propulsion error on dashboard momentarily. But it went away when I restarted vehicle. Safety of myself, passengers and other drivers were out at risk as there was no warning that I would lose ability to accelerate. There was a no fuel warning but my gas tank was mostly full.

12 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2023

Failure of the becm and “shift to park” message. The vehicle will spontaneously produce a shift to park message when starting up the vehicle and turning it off. The vehicle will also show a 0 mile ev range and use the engine where a message saying “propulsion power reduced”. This will also cause the car to shut off randomly. The vehicle has not been inspected by a shop or the dealership. There is no warning or message when this happen. Check engine will appear once the vehicle has these issues.

13 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2023

All of a sudden while braking on a freeway offramp, the check engine light came on and a reduced propulsion warning came on my screen. The car ran weird for about a day, then it wouldn't start. I had it towed to a dealer, they diagnosed the becm went bad, now my car has been there 2. 5 weeks and there's no estimated ship date for the part, much less repair date. If they said they had enough parts for becm failures, they're either lying to you or they're lying to me.

14 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2023

During a drive the car began warning of loss of propulsion. The vehicle is at a dealer waiting for repair since oct 16, 2023. There is no eta on back ordered egr valve that the technician anticipates a fix.

15 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2023

The egr valve in my Volt suddenly failed with no warning while driving 70 mph on the highway. I had to pull over before the engine overheated and I stopped on the side of interstate in a very tight shoulder on a curve with traffic and semi trucks passing by very closely. I’ve now been waiting over one year for repair as Chevrolet is unable to make this part for a repair that is still covered under warranty. Very disappointed and I hope this report will help push a larger message through that Chevrolet is being irresponsible with making parts for the needed warranty repairs.

16 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2023

Egr valve failed. This can cause the Volt to stall in traffic. No eta on replacement. The situation seriously limits driving ability. Reduced propulsion and engine light came up. F3 fuse blew related to failed egr. This is a known issue with chevy Volts. It was checked out by dealership in Aug. They replaced fuse and basically said can only drive on electric. If turns over to gas it could cause major problems.

17 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2023

Shifter malfunctions when shifted to park. Car does not recognize shifted to park and error message appears on dash. States, shift to park. Will not fully shut off vehicle.

18 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2023

Door locks fail to lock or unlock on occasion. In certain scenarios this leaves the driver and passengers with a feeling of being unsafe.

19 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2023

The egr valve had failed, causing a check engine light, which turned into a blown fuse. The fuse blowing left the vehicle stranded until I unplugged the egr valve and replaced the fuse. I drove it to a shop, where they replaced the valve and the car has been functional since then.

20 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2023

“shift to park” error. When attempting to park the vehicle, an ‘action required’ alert pops up on the dash advising to “shift to park” when the vehicle is already in park. The vehicle will not lock once this message is prompted.

21 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2023

After looking up an issue with my Volt, I learned that this is a big safety issue and very common. When I put the car in park there is now an intermittent issue that says "shift to park" on the display and the car will not shut off, and I cant confirm that the car is actually in park.

22 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2023

In 2020 my 2017 Chevrolet Volt had an intermittent problem turning off. My Chevrolet dealer worked to fix the problem. This March I had an accident which involved me thinking the car was shut down. I was half way out of the car when I realized it was moving. Before I could get completely in to apply the brakes, I had hit and pushed an object into a building which caused damage to the building and my car. The was a police report which states that I was at fault. My car was towed to my. Chevrolet dealer for repair. The repair took about two months mostly due to obtaining shifting parts. I can now drive the car but the parts to replace the shifting mechanism is still on back order. It is now early October. The “shift into park” as I think the problem has been named, is still an intermittent problem for me. Sometimes the car shuts down promptly as it should. Sometimes however, I go though the process of shutting down a few times before I am confident that the car has really turned off. I would like to know if this defect has caused other accidents. If so, it my mitigate my responsibility for my my accident which has caused me grief and a large increase in my insurance premium. Another reason I am writing is because there has been a report of a fatal accident in vienna township, near flint, michigan involving a women being pinned under her car after exiting to check her mail box. The article in “m-live” paper by joey oliver joliver@mlive. Com the supposition was that she thought her car was in park. I am hoping that the investigators of her accident would consider the possibility of the car being defective. . Read more...

23 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2023

The egr valve on the vehicle went bad, causing the vehicle to display 'propulsion reduce' and 'engine not available' errors on the dashboard before the vehicle came to a stop while driving on an interstate. Searching this issue for the Chevrolet Volt online yields a significant amount of similar issues experienced by other Volt owners. Vehicle was inspected and repaired by a Chevrolet dealership, but seems to be a recurring issue with very limited parts supplied by gm, leading to potential of very long delays in repair time.

24 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2023

The evaporative emissions pipe has a hole in it. This same issue has been previously associated with a recall. The dealer (andy mohr Chevrolet - plainfield) reported that it was fixed in 2020 and declined to do service without me paying for it.

25 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2023

Becm failure. Initially, it caused the vehicle to operate in a low propulsion state. However, it now prevents the vehicle from starting. Likewise, I have heard it has stopped the engines from working/shut down the engines while people are driving on the highway.

26 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/29/2022

The car stalled at a high rate of speed on a freeway because of egr failure. Engine check light is on, along with a warning about a critical problem with emissions system that requires immediate attention. The part is out of stock in all dealership within a reasonable reach. The problem is under warranty, but I have made multiple attempts to fix this issue with no success.

27 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2022

The two original equipment hydraulic struts that support either side of the rear trunk lid failed. It is available for inspection. The safety of my husband and I is/was put at risk because when you open the trunk, the lid is not staying up like it did, causing it to crash down on your head, back of neck, shoulder, arm, hand, etc. , causing injury that is potentially fatal. The faulty parts are still in place and not inspected yet by a dealer, service center, police or insurance company. No warnings given for this faulty equipment, hence the danger of its unexpected suddenness. It started about 2 weeks ago. I spoke with general motors, the florida dmv and the Chevrolet dealership where the car was purchased and is taken for repairs.

28 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2022

On Sunday night, I was driving around 65 mph on the 405 freeway to take my friend to the airport. I noticed that the car started to give a weird feedback sensation on the pedals and had started to jerk us forward. As I merged onto the two-lane on ramp to the 10 freeway, the car started to rapidly lose power and then completely died and went dark. I was unable to use the hazard lights as the car had just gone dark but then it turned back on but would not let me shift it into drive. As I was on a two-lane on-ramp with no shoulder in the dark, we just had to pray that no one would hit us. In doing research, I suspect that this was yet another becm failure that has been repeatedly happening with this year of Chevrolet Volts. There was most recently a class-action lawsuit filed for this very issue. The car is currently at the dealership awaiting inspection but I am terrified to drive that car again if it even becomes drivable. Especially since there were no warning lights or signs on the vehicle to indicate that this could be an issue and to have it die on the freeway in the way that it did, putting my life and many other lives at risk, I am shocked that there hasn't been a recall for this issue.

29 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/22/2022

Egr valve failed, and car stopped driving on the highway.

30 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2022

Our 2017 Volt started experiencing a "shift to park" error message on November 2, 2022 when the vehicle is stopped and the transmission shifter has been placed in "park". Apparently the microswitch responsible for detecting "park" (gm part # 84955382) has failed and this appears to be a common defect in several models of Chevrolet. With this error message the vehicle will not turn off and the car cannot be secured properly (both of which are a safety concern). Our vehicle has less than 30k miles on it so it should not be a case of normal wear and tear causing the problem. Gm has not issued a recall for this defect yet but we see there are several class action law suits looking to force them to do so. We also note that a number of consumers have reported the error progressing so that it occurs while the vehicle is in operation causing the driver to have to pull to the side of the road when transmission operation ceases. Chevrolet released document id 5403533 on December 11, 2020, bulletin #19-na-206 due to the frequency of this defect detailing the parts needed to effect repairs for several models of Chevrolet. We have discussed this issue with our local Chevrolet dealer and they concur the vehicle should be repaired ASAP to avoid the progression of switch failure in the vehicle. Since the car is out of warranty and in the absence of a manufacturer's recall that will cost approximately $310. We will have this repair done tomorrow (November 15) and will ask the dealer to provide us the defective switch in case you care to inspect it.

31 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2022

At approximately 61,500 miles my chevy Volt would not start. I had it towed to a repair facility who determined the problem was a faulty becm (battery energy control module), but that it would still be covered by the manufacturer's warranty. So I had the vehicle towed to a dealership. The vehicle has been at the dealership for six weeks as of the time I write this, but report they have yet to diagnose the problem or offer a solution. Doing research online I have found that becm failure is a common problem among the chevy Volt, of all model years. And due to "supply chain disruptions" people are having to wait weeks to months for their vehicle to be repaired. Fortunately my vehicle did not fail in a dangerous location, however the becm failure could happen randomly at any time at any mileage and appears to be a design flaw. Fortunately my vehicle is still covered by the manufacturer's warranty, but in my opinion, repair should be extended to all chevy Volts.

32 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2022

A lot of times when I turned off the car "shift to park" message comes on. First time I've noticed this was about few months back. Then, it happened maybe 2-3 times, but now it has been happening constantly. Almost every time I turned off the car.

33 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2022

This chevy Volt experiences transmission's shift-to-park error. This error prevents car from turning off due to not recognizing the shift gear is in the park position. After placing the shift into park and turning the power button off, the car turns back on again and flashes the shift-to-park error message. This apparently is a malfunction of gear shift which has been widely reported on gm-volt community board on 2nd generation Volts.

34 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2022

When I put my car in park , it tells me to shift to park and will not turn off.

35 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2022

Control module battery energy control failure part is unavailable for more then 3 months or more check engine light on car can be disabled at any time traveling down highway dealer confirmed part needs to be replaced.
