36 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2024

The vehicle tells me to "stop and shift to park" while I am driving, and power was lost to accessories such as the climate control. Since the egr was identified as the cause of the problem, the car remains on "propulsion power reduced" mode. The egr has been backordered for months, if not years, and aftermarket third-party egr valves are not readily available either. However, there is no recall, and this is clearly a common problem on these vehicles as attested on gm-volt forums. The egr failed about one year ago, but now the message on reduced propulsion power is presented every time I start the vehicle.

37 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2024

I was driving at about 50mph all of a sudden I got a propulsion error and my car stopped working it had no power! people had to swerve around me and I was almost hit. My car would not drive I shut it off and back on multiple times. Finally it started but would not go above 25 it was so scary. I went to the dealership they said it’s known issue since 2016 and that my miles were too high so it would not be covered to fix the total amount it almost 3,000 this seems unfair that chevy would continue to sell a vehicle knowing it had issues with a energy control module and not fix it for free. Especially when you could be killed while driving it!!.

38 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2024

On November 8, I was on a 5 hour drive and after 4 hours while driving on the gas engine since the 43 mile electric range was already depleted, a warning suddenly appeared on the dashboard screen - shift to park, something about reduced propulsion and the check engine light came on. I was driving 55 mph on a highway and immediately had no propulsion whatsoever. Tried to pull over and barely got to the edge of the highway with cars and trucks speeding behind me and then around me. On the roadside, the car would turn on and off and I could change gears with the shifter, but no matter what I did the propulsion to move the car would not work. The car had to be towed to the nearest dealership for repairs where it remains.

39 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2024

Automation-on 10. 1. 24 my car stopped working. It would turn on, but would not shift. It was also showing my ev was fully charged but the ev miles read 0. My husband came and plugged my car in and saw that when I turned the car on it read "shift to park" also the codes from my onstar app read "lithium ion battery"- issue found in high Voltage battery. "12 Volt battery needs attention" 10. 2. 24 we called gm to report issues and referenced n232432680 (bcem). We were informed that even though we can read diagnostic reports on onstar it needed to be confirmed from a certified gm dealership that they could not confirm this is the warranty issue if they did not 1st had the certified dealership share their diagnostic report. Bergstrom shared it sounded like becm that is under warranty. They continued to share it didnt look good and the VIN was not in the system to be covered. Shared the minimum amount we would pay was $440 for the 2 issues for labor/diagnostics. 10. 4. 24 we called gm to file a report we were given a case manager to work our case. 10. 8. 24 received call from case manager shared no warranties seen on file. I asked for this to be documented and emailed to me, I was told she could not share this information other than this phone call. Bergstrom called saying the car was ready to pick up, cleared codes/no issues, drove 26 miles with no codes. Shared gm never seen/heard anything like this and had no advise/help to offer. Shared only charged for 1 hour of labor. Asked for trade in for car. Was given price $1,200 under trade in value. Cause due to car not safe, potential issues. No documentation shared, nothing to show issues, car is clean/cleared to drive they had no answer than my car was fine but was not able to give lowest amount for trade in due to issues.

40 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/24/2024

While driving on the highway there was sudden power loss with a message on the display stating "propulsion reduced" and had to pull over.

41 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2024

While driving, a warning chime sounded and a message appeared saying "propulsion power reduced. " the check engine light also appeared. The car lost power, would accelerate only very slowly, and eventually died along a busy road. After a period, I was able to restart car and drive very slowly to dealer. I was told that the problem was a faulty egr valve, which was blowing a fuse and would do so again. Dealer was unable to find a replacement valve anywhere in the nation. Gm apparently is not manufacturing replacements for this components, and from reports found onliine, plenty of others have had the same problem. The temporary fix is to disconnect the egr valve, which results in increased vehicle emissions. I will be unable to pass my next emissions test next year. The safety issue is that the vehicle can quit running without warning in any situation.

42 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2024

Experienced severe engine failure while driving on the freeway, which cost to be in operable due to failure of egr valve. This is a warranty repair however gm has part on backorder for over a year with no plan to fix. My car is now disabled and I have no other transportation.

43 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2024

Reduced propulsion power and check engine light. Egr valve failure per mechanic. Part has been on a global back order for 1. 5 years. The car will not pass emissions testing and can blow a fuse that will make the car inoperable. The part is also costly at 2400. 00 without labor costs. My car has 83,000 miles, is well-maintained and only 7 years old and now I can’t drive it or sell it.

44 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/29/2024

P1e00 error code resulted in the propulsion system being reduced and climate controls turned off. My wife, driving at the time in a thunderstorm, lost the ability to drive the speed of traffic and also her windshield completely fogging up where she could not see. She could have been killed in this scenario in a number of ways. Took it to the dealer where gm apparently has no spare parts available for months??? parts at fault are related to the egr valve and cooler. Cel light came on and off for a few days prior. Failed to be able to pull the error code because it would go off.

45 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/26/2024

Without warning, my car stopped charging. Noticed it was at 0 miles despite charging it the night before. Believing I may have not properly connected the home cord (supplied by chevy) to the car, I chalked it up to being my mistake and plugged in again the next night. Same result. 0 miles. Then it immediately started acting like a 12v battery failure with engine warning lights and then it just refused to start and/or charge and was dead in the water. I called aaa for a battery jump and they came. It got the car started, but the check engine light remained lit for two days and I primarily ran the car on its gas generator to hopefully charge it. Just last night, the check engine light went away. Despite having a partial charge, this morning 8/29, it registered 3 miles down from being higher. I just plugged in to my home outlet using the chevy cord, and again, it would not charge (no green light on dash indicating active charge and a message on the dash should "unable to charge". I suspect a battery energy control mondule (becm) failure which seems to happen with this car. My 12v acdelco battery is relatively new (3 yrs) and not used heavily (given covid).

46 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2024

I was driving on a highway around 70 mph on cruise control, without warning a “propulsion power reduced” message came up with the check engine light turning on and the car stopped accelerating/let off of cruise control. Very dangerous when driving at speeds above 70mph. I took the car to chevy and they said it’s a egr valve issue and that it would cost roughly $3,800 and the part is on massive back order. R reading online, there’s many Volt drivers with the same issue and can’t get the part for months on (with some being offered a repurchase of the car from gm so the problem would go away) it seems like chevy and or gm do not have sufficient parts to fix the massive amount of Volts having this specific problem and on top of that, this is the largest quote I’ve seen for this repair.

47 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2024

My 2017 Chevrolet Volt started displaying an error message last week "reduced propulsion power". I set up an appointment at the dealership but had to continue driving in the meantime. The error message changed to "engine unavailable" and shortly therefore shut down completely. We had it towed to a dealership, who has informed us that the egr valve and gasket need to be replaced, and are on indefinite backorder. This is clearly a safety issue as we need to be able to rely on the car not shutting down in the middle of driving. Now we are left without a car or a timeline for repair.

48 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2024

Egr valve issue. I have a 'reduced propulsion energy' notice on the dash. Unable to get repaired because there is no parts. This is a common problem with these chevy vehicles. Emissions test won't pass.

49 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2024

At least 4 times in the past 1. 5 years, my car has given the message “propulsion power is reduced” at random times. Each time after receiving this message, the car engine begins making a loud noise and the acceleration is greatly reduced, forcing me to drive at a slower speed until the message goes away. The most recent time it happened, in Aug 2024, it was late at night in an area with little to no cell service and I was genuinely terrified the car would just shut down, as I knew this model has done the same to other Volt owners. Thankfully, I did make it home, but this is something that has happened more times than I’m comfortable with, and I fear the day it happens again and puts others at risk. It has not received any further inspection other than the yearly state inspection, which is up to date.

50 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2024

Egr valve failed. Gm has this part in a national control status. Vehicle should be under warranty per the handbook but dealership is denting this. Dealer solution is to just disconnect the part and says it is safe to drive. Not comfortable with this since I have had this vehicle modified to allow myself who is handicapped the ability to drive it. Dealership wants prepayment of part before placing the order for it. Part is expensive and they have no idea how long they will be using my money before or if the part is available.

51 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2024

Vehicle began exhibiting issues with becm, reduced propulsion/limp home mode with range-extender activation. Car unexpectedly stopped running in the middle of the road, came to a complete stop and unable to move off road under car's propulsion.

52 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2024

While driving, a warning message came "engine unavailable. " I was able to drive a few more blocks but then the car stopped on its own. This happened despite the fact that the car had almost a full tank of gas. If this had happened on the highway, it would have been very dangerous. Luckily, I was on a fairly empty city street and I simply pulled to the curb. This is a known problem with the chevy Volt (2017). An independent service center confirmed that the original problem is that the egr valve needs replacing. When this is an issue, a fuse often blows and this fuse stops the car from moving. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance rep or others. There was a message that came on a few days before the incident that said "propulsion power is reduced. " an independent service center said the egr valve needs to be replaced. There are no egr valves available; they have been on back order for months. I have an appointment with the chevy dealer for next week, so they can confirm the egr valve needs replacing and I can get on their waitlist to receive an egr valve. This is expected to take 6-12 months or possibly longer. In the meantime, I can drive the car on electric charge but am supposed to avoid engaging the ice engine. If I end up running out of electric charge, I am at risk of once again having the fuse blow and the car failing to move forward. This is ridiculous. Why is gm/chevy not required to provide parts in a timely manner to existing customers to make sure their cars run safely? I am definitely not the only Volt owner experiencing this issue -- there are many people online complaining about the same issue. All of us risk a situation of the car stopping to run at any time.

53 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2024

Egr valve failed while driving on the freeway. Loss power. Check engine light on. Propulsion power reduced. It is safety and emissions related.

54 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2024

Currently, two two issues are ongoing with my 2017 Chevrolet Volt premier. I took my Volt to epic Chevrolet in sacramento, CA, on August 9, 2024, because the "propulsion power is reduced" warning and the "service park assist system" warning came on with the "check engine" light. After diagnosis I was informed that the "egr valve" has failed; however, Chevrolet cannot procure the egr valve to repair my Volt and it is now October 14. I have been coordinating with Chevrolet customer assistance who continue to inform me that they are looking for the part but cannot provide it - apparently this part has been redesigned. This is the third time in 12 months that the Volt has been in for repair, all under warranty, for charging and propulsion related issues. On August 23, 2023, the Volt was in the shop for 15 days getting the "battery energy control module" replaced under warranty. On [xxx], one week after being repaired, my car would not start and had to be towed. That time the "hybrid battery disconnect relay assembly" failed and was in the shop for 14 days, again repaired under warranty. This time, my car has been in the shop for 66 days waiting for an egr valve that, per epic Chevrolet, is covered under warranty. It is unacceptable for Chevrolet to warranty its cars but not have the parts to perform the repair and let owners continue to pay loans on a car, insure a car, and have financial hardships for not having a car. I am not confident that, once fixed, something else will not go wrong. Plus, I was quoted $1,160 to fix the safety issue of the parking collision warning. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

55 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2024

Reduced propulsion message appears on the dash and car lost propulsion on the highway. The egr blew a fuse and the car enters the walk home mode. This problem should be covered under warranty but my dealership says it is not covered. This issue causes the car not to be able to drive. Chevy is back ordered for the part and there is no estimate of when the part will be available. They apparently do not make the part anymore and there is no fix. Th egr seems to have bad soldering and blows the fuse #3.

56 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2024

While making a 90 mile drive on 7/20, after having depleted the primary battery charge and switched to hybrid mode, a "propulsion power is reduced" warning appeared on the console, along with the check engine light. Other than somewhat reduced power (max displayed of ~40-50 kw), performance otherwise seemed unimpeded. Contacted local dealership to schedule service for earliest available date of 7/26. Car made return 90 mile trip on 7/21 without issue additional issue ("propulsion power is reduced" message remained. ) service identified "numerous codes", but replaced a fuse known to result in the above issue and observed no other issues. Car was driven purely on battery at that time, and for the intervening time until a 170 mile drive on 8/2, where the message and check engine light reappeared, again after battery charge was consumed and car switched to hybrid power mode. Dealership was again contacted to schedule service, slated for the morning of 8/7 (tomorrow, as of this writing). Car reached its destination without further incident. During return 170 mile trip on 8/5, traveling on the highway, car abruptly alerted that the engine was no longer available and entered a severely reduced-power mode. Car had been operating in "mountain mode" (conserving some extra battery charge) as a precaution, so we were able safely exit the highway and pull into a local parking lot, at which point aaa was contacted to tow the car the remaining 120 miles home. Upon arriving home, the car was able to pull into the garage without the "engine not available" alert, but still displaying check engine light and "propulsion power reduced" messages. We have come to understand this is a fairly common issue with generation ii Volts and have been advised by other owners to file this report.

57 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2024

Mil came on for egr malfunction. Part not available.

58 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2024

The propulsion system stopped working altogether while the car was in motion. The battery charge gauge went from 1/2 to full. The charging information screen displayed a message reading "unable to charge. " the air conditioning only blew out hot air, but the coolant temperature gauge read 194-degrees f (within "normal"). The "check engine" light also came on. Diagnostics found the f3ua fuse blown and a faulty egr valve. A service bulletin for this exact issue was published by gm in February 2023. The company is aware of the issue but is leaving it for customers to discover while operating the vehicle. Safety inspections and oil change centers do not catch this issue. This is a safety concern and should be recalled immediately.

59 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2024

July 3, 2024, while driving on pennsylvania turnpike, check engine light came on with reduced propulsion warning. Continued driving to destination without incidence. Did not drive again until July 5th. July 5th while driving using "hold" method of propulsion using internal combustion engine, check engine light remained on, after the engine warmed up, all of the sudden, there was a noticeable reduction of power, followed shortly by the internal combustion engine shutting off while I was entering onto an interstate highway ramp. Fortunately I was able to pull off to the side of the road and back down the ramp without incidence and return home under grossly reduced battery propulsion. July 8, took vehicle to Chevrolet dealership (baierl Chevrolet, wexford PA) under battery power. Was told ecm module was bad. Ecm module was replaced, error codes cleared, vehicle ran as expected. After driving approximately 50 miles, check engine light with reduced propulsion warning returned. Turned vehicle around and returned to the same dealership. Was told egr valve was bad while blowing fuse f03 (non walk home circuit). The dealership did not have a replacement in stock and it would take 7-10 days to obtain a replacement. I had to rent a vehicle out of my own pocket to return home for employment purposes. July 11th, I emailed dealership's service advisor for status of replacement part. Never heard back from service advisor. July 15, 11:24 am, talked to dealership service advisor, was told part was in transit with no estimated delivery date. July 22 called service adviser and left a voice mail message for a return status call. Never received a return call. July 23, called dealership, talked to parts department for part status, was told part had not shipped from warehouse yet and there was no estimate on shipment. After having to return the rental vehicle, I am without a vehicle for my daily required activities. Not an acceptable situations.

60 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2024

Egr valve short circuit caused f3fuse to blow causing engine light to go on and propulsion reduced power warning. The f3 fuse affects 4-5 other systems.

61 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2024

Was driving on highway when given error ""propulsion power reduced. " this resulted in less power available, which is a safety hazard. Then after a while of driving (on the highway) I received the error "engine not available," which caused me to have to continue on electric only power. If I did not have any battery left in the traction battery, I would have had to maneuver to the shoulder. The error code revealed by a scan with the obd device p0403 relates to a failed egr valve. There are no replacement parts for this valve, according to gm, so future failure is likely.

62 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/22/2024

On December 2023 the vehicle lost power and lost control while driving speed limit 55 mph followed by check engine light associated codes due to known issue with bcem controller failing. June 2024 vehicle experienced the same issue with duplicate check engine codes associated with prior issue. Dealer states the vehicle has a bad battery pack and has been there for over 8 months. Vehicle has a becm warranty due to a law suite filed and also has a battery pack warranty from gm that was extended for 150,000 miles or 10 years.

63 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2024

1st incident-while doing a u-turn on an inclined road car suddenly sounded like it was going to die, no acceleration when I pressed on the gas pedal. Car almost stopped as it was on a hill and suddenly the gas engine turned on so the accelerator started to work again. I felt very unsafe and thought I was going to get hit by any on coming cars due to the loss of acceleration. 2nd incident(about a month after the 1st)-just going straight down a road, pressed on the accelerator and again nothing happened, no acceleration, car sounded like it was turning off, then switched over to the gas engine and the accelerator started to work again. Also, not very safe with cars coming up behind me quickly and loss of acceleration. Had gm look at car, could not reproduce problem, bcem module already replaced-they could not replace due to gm not approving a second replacement, they would not say car is safe, but go ahead and drive it anyway until the problem occurs again. How many times should this happen before I am actually in an accident because of this problem? I have been the sole owner of this care since 2017 and I have done all the maintenance required for it, I do believe this is a safety issue that should be addressed. I have just been told to drive it until it catastrophically doesn't work, how reassuring of gm!.

64 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2024

I have needed a new egr valve for my 2017 Volt for 11 months now. Gm told me this in August of last year. I was able to continue to drive the car (without a passing inspection) since then, until recently I was on the highway and my car simply stopped responding to the throttle. I slowly coasted to a stop on the shoulder and was eventually able to get started and off the road, into a parking lot. This is a serious safety issue as I ended up going 20 mph on the highway for a while, which easily could have caused an accident. Gm needs to be held responsible for not supporting this part in a timely manner. This is a known issue amongst Volt owners and gm does not seem the least bit interested in making things right.

65 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2024

The egr (exhaust gas recirculation) valve has failed, which causes issues with the fuel propulsion system, can cause the cooling system to fail, and affects the emissions system. We are unable to obtain a replacement valve anywhere and have been on a waiting list at the dealership for months. The car is not safe to drive in this condition.

66 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2024

Three incidents in the last few weeks. My 2017 chevy Volt today has about 84,000 miles. First incident, while driving on an interstate at about 50 mph I suddenly lose ability to accelerate. There was some beeping, dashboard turns yellow, I get a low fuel warning and I cannot accelerate. I pull over on interstate. Re-start vehicle and car restarts. Second incident, driving about 20 mph leaving a neighborhood. I have 4 passengers, all kids. The same exact error happens. I’m unable to accelerate though I’m pushing down on gas, fuel light turns yellow. Low fuel light. I pull over. I restart vehicle. Car starts normally. Car goes into shop. Chevy dealership says it’s the catalytic converter. About a week later, 3rd incident. Entering highway at about 60 mph, trying to accelerate and merge into traffic doing 70 mph. I cannot accelerate past 60 mph, I hear the beeps, fuel gauge turns yellow, low fuel warning. Check engine light turns on. Several days prior to this, I had a low propulsion error on dashboard momentarily. But it went away when I restarted vehicle. Safety of myself, passengers and other drivers were out at risk as there was no warning that I would lose ability to accelerate. There was a no fuel warning but my gas tank was mostly full.

67 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/04/2024

While driving down the highway a "reduced propulsion" message appeared on the dashboard and the drive became very rough if speed changed, also the engine temperature increased but it did not overheat before we could stop. This was diagnosed as an exhaust gas recirculation (egr) valve failure. I spoke to multiple dealers and did research online as well and this is a very common issue on this vehicle. So common that the part is impossible to get and has an eight month wait which means I cannot drive my vehicle. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? egr valve how was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? my car had reduced propulsion, engine temperature increased and it suddenly lost speed quickly on highway when my foot was removed from gas pedal. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? yes. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? no, Chevrolet is aware of this issue and say we just have to wait 8 months for the part. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no pre-warning a "reduced propulsion" message and a check engine light turned on at the time of the egr valve failure.

68 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2024

While driving on high-speed devided highways including stretches where traffic was 2-way (single lanes separated by concrete barrier during road maintenance) chevy Volt indicated "reduced propulsion", and in 2 cases forced shut-down of electric and gas engine where the single-lane travel had cement barriers on both sides of the driving lane. In at least one case, the engine forced 30-40 mph travel until a break in the right-hand cement barrier was interrupted and I could get off the highway. In another case, the engine and fuel propulsion shut down but there was a breakdown lane on the right allowing traffic flow but exposing me to risk due to how close 65 mph traffic was passiing me. In each failure case, after turning off and re-starting the vehicle, the vehicle seemed to have re-set propulsion control and I could continue the trip at normal speed until another warning but not complete faillure occurred (both lanes being available so I could drive to an exit, turn off the ignition, restart and resume the travel). I believe the failure was in the becm (battery energy control module) but the Chevrolet dealer identified an egr failure that prevents their repair team from diagnosing the becm. Whatever the failure was, it put me iin a very dangerous situation in at least 2 points in my 600 mile trip.

69 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2024

I had the becm fail as part of many 2017 Volts with this issue at around 40k miles. This failure has caused multiple near accidents with immediately losing power at highway speeds. The last time this happened (after the becm was replaced) was a couple of weeks ago. They said the reason for the failure was a programming issue, and they have updated it. It is flabbergasting to me that a programming issue can result in such a dangerous result. The car reduced propulsion on the highway and got stuck on the offramp while trying to pull over on the busy highway. Not only were we left stranded on the highway with me being 8 and a half months pregnant, but my husband almost got into an accident twice while trying to make it over safely. Chevy needs to be accountable for these significant failures that seem to continuously happen to chevy Volts. It's not just the becm - they have multiple things that are causing extremely dangerous results. When they replaced the becm they also replaced the 12v (with significant out of pocket cost to us) and leaving us with no vehicle for a long time. We bought a new car right after this incredibly scary incident.

70 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2024

Starting June 2024 my car started s displaying the check engine light with the message “propulsion power is reduced” when driving on electric. When the message is displayed it switches to gas even if it has a full charge. Since June 2024 the check engine light is mostly on but sometimes turns off when electric is depleted and it’s running on gas. The message is randomly displayed when I accelerate.
