Failure Date: 04/26/2024

Driving at highway speed car would slow down on its own and go into "reduced propulsion mode".

37 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2024

Power surge I hit the gas to cross the highway and lack of power then got home the next morning started the car and it started serging in the driveway then it shut down altogether.

38 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2024

My car is lurching very dramatically while on battery-only. Especially over 35-40 miles an hour. I was run off the road last week and am becoming fearful for my safety in this car. I have heard that there may be something wrong with the battery or. Becm.

39 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/13/2024

I am writing to report a series of safety concerns regarding my 2017 chevy Volt, which have persisted despite multiple attempts to address them with the dealership. These issues pose significant risks to my safety and that of others on the road. On January 18th, 2024, I brought my vehicle to the provo utah Chevrolet dealer after experiencing reduced propulsion power while driving on the highway, coupled with the illumination of the check engine light. The mechanic performed a quick inspection and used a gm scan tool to diagnose the issue, revealing the code p1e00 for the hybrid powertrain control module 2, which was cleared without a thorough investigation. I was advised to return if the issue reoccurred. Despite the reset, the problem persisted, and on February 9th, 2024, I scheduled another appointment due to my chevy Volt's high Voltage battery charging only to 65% capacity despite indicating a full charge. However, upon arriving for the appointment at 4:00 pm, I was informed that the hybrid mechanic had left for the day, and I was asked to return on another day. Subsequently, on February 11th, 2024, the check engine light illuminated again, and on February 12th, 2024, while driving to work, I experienced a loss of propulsion power on the highway, placing my safety at risk. These ongoing issues with propulsion power and the high-voltage battery charging system are not only inconvenient but also potentially dangerous. Despite multiple visits to the dealership and attempts to diagnose and resolve the problem, it persists, indicating a systemic issue that requires immediate attention. I urge the national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA) to investigate this matter thoroughly to ensure the safety of chevy Volt drivers and passengers. It is imperative that general motors addresses these issues promptly and implements appropriate measures to prevent further incidents.

40 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2024

Was driving home from work and my car just stopped check engine light came one the engine came on but then went off and I was stranded my issurance came threw with a tow but from all good to a complete stop sucks.

41 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2024

My vehicle shut down in the middle of the road. Gm diagnosed it as a faulty becm.

42 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2024

Becm failure on car confirmed at 128,000 miles. While driving the car's check engine light came on; immediately followed by a message of reduced propulsion and the ev range dropping to 0. Vehicle switched to gas and ran very rough for a short distance to an available stop. Have been informed by dealership that the vehicle is now unsafe for driving due to a potential stall.

43 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2024

While driving in 60 degree weather, the vehicle’s check engine light lit on the dash and the vehicle abruptly stopped. I was able to push the vehicle safely in heavy traffic. I contacted onstar who gave me the vehicle diagnosis. Onstar advised the following codes appeared poaca (hybrid/ electric vehicle powertrain control module requested malfunction indicator lamp illumination), p1aee ( the electric propulsion system is not performing as expected. Please service immediately), and p1aef (the electric propulsion system is not performing as expected).

44 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2024

Car stopped operation while out doing errands. Car had to be parked and restarted and made it back home. Car would not start again. Had to have it towed to dealership, becm needs replaced for $2000. Warranty should cover, but part is backordered. Not sure when it will be fixed and with the recent freezing temperatures could have been dangerous.

45 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2024

Vehicle stopped running, will not restart. Odb codes show failure of the becm. Check engine light illuminated, ready indication turned off. Vehicle does not display battery or fuel status. We were left stranded by this failure.

46 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2023

Car won't start show codes u2622, u2621, u2620, u2619, p0afa.

47 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/21/2023

The latest episode with my 2017 chevy Volt is a culmination of years of issues with the low clearance on the vehicle causing continual damage and unsafe driving conditions that require expensive repairs due to the design flaw (note - I had a 2014 chevy Volt that had none of these problems). My son was driving the car a week ago and the engine control module (gm part # 12700116) fell out of the car. This led to the car to stop driving instantly - if he had been anywhere other than a quiet residential street it could have been catastrophic. Upon having towed the vehicle to the dealership, I was informed that the wiring harness failed which led to the ecm falling onto the street. I drive this car strictly in city limits and on major highways, and despite this the bottom undercarriage is constantly damaged because it is simply to low to the ground. In addition to the repair bill of $3k+ (my 4th repair required due to this defect), the harness isn't even available and gm cannot provide an eta for when it will be. I experienced a similar issue 6 months ago when a part was backordered for 3+ months and this is compounded by the fact that their dealerships no longer have loan car inventory. Note that there was no warning before this happened. I have tried escalating to gm but their response is essentially that I am sol. Again - this is a design flaw of the vehicle that should have been addressed but never was. Note that this doesn't include the other continual issues (well documented) that continue to plague the car after other recall service (loss of propulsion, shifter issues that frequently make it impossible to actually turn the car off, etc. ).

48 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2023

While driving the car in electric mode, a chime came on and flashed 'propulsion power is reduced', then it went into engine mode and the car decelerated quickly from posted 70mph speed to less than 40mph even though I pushed the accelerator pedal and reved the engine high. While in this low power driving mode, a warning came on saying the collision detection system was disabled. The concern is the person behind me had no warning since my brake lights did not come on. He sped around me with a bit of road rage. The problem temporarily goes away when you turn the ignition off and back on. I took it to the dealer and the said it needed a new egr cooler 4 hours labor $1500. Chevy dealer pulled two codes p0401 exhaust gas recirculation "a" flow insufficient detected p1e00 hybrid/ev powertrain control module 2 I paid them the $165 diagnosis fee and got my car back and just plan to restart when it occurs. In another instance, I was pulling out from a parking lot into a busy road in electric mode and the car lost all power leaving me exposed in the line of traffic. Error messages on the dash said to 'service becm' and 'shift to park'. The car was not drivable and had to be towed. Call me if you need any more information. Thank you, jim texter 404. 644. 5868.

49 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2023

1 month ago was driving on toll and population power is reduced came on, vehicle was reaving high and felt like power was being reduced/speed, was going 70 and had to immediately decrease speed and get off toll and found closest chevy shop. Looked at dash and vehicle should have had at least 10 energy miles but it had immediately dropped down to 0. Before taking to chevy, I had a quick inspection done by a valvoline shop and they told me the battery had to be replaced. Carvana (silverrock) warranty refused to do the repair under their coverages as “batteries were not covered under warranty” had it towed from valvoline to chevy. Found out chevy battery was under warranty so it was taken there. Vehicle was checked in and didn’t have an eta as hybrid battery was on back order with no eta. 3 weeks later the part was received and it was a control module not a battery as the “battery was not failing at the time”. Service called and said vehicle was ready for pick up. Had vehicle for 1 week and was at work starting it up and after 9 hours sitting started it up and low population came back on and vehicle started idling higher than before then after a minute looked at back of car and a large cloud of while smoke started forming from back of vehicle. Immediately turned off car and called GMC roadside assistance to have vehicle towed to another dealership where is it sitting again for diagnosis with no eta.

50 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2023

Consistent bcem failure with Volt. Power reduced even if battery has full charge and gas is in tank. Forward collision made unavailable without reason whilst driving. I rely on the forward collision system while driving at night in my area because of drivers cutting each other off constantly, so losing this feature without knowing why it failed feels unsafe to me. Forward collision would also activate when no vehicle is infront of me causing the car to suddenly stop and jerk on the road. Propulsion power is reduced is an extremely common occurrence in my Volt. It happens randomly while driving and even while charging. When I'm on the highway the car would slow down when the warning came on; even with cars right behind me. I'm scared one day the car's system will cause an accident because of it's unpredictability. Regular maintenance has been performed and no issues have been found. The problem continues to persist.

51 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2023

On December 8 2023 while traveling at highway speed my Chevrolet Volt abruptly lost propulsion and an alert was displayed to pull over and turn car off. I was on 101 in California a 4 lane highway forced to cross 3 lanes of traffic at an exceptionally slow speed in heavy traffic. It is a miracle a crash did not occur. Fortunately other drivers were aware and able to stop or quickly change lanes. Aaa towed directly to stewart Chevrolet in colma CA. It was diagnosed and I was advised it is under warranty however parts are on back order. Today 3/26/2024 ~ the car still has not been repaired and I have been advised parts will not ship until September 2024. This is both dangerous and unacceptable.

52 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2023

Vehicle periodically throws p0964 and p0ac4 related to TSB pic6330. Recently, this has led to poor running of internal combustion engine and low/undrivable power, almost leaving me stranded. Took multiple restarts before I could drive the vehicle. The TSB indicates to replace part# 24285319 (internal transmission solenoid control harness) however gm indicates they have discontinued manufacture of this part. How am I supposed to get my 6 year old car fixed if gm doesn't supply the part?.

53 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/28/2023

The becm located in the battery compartment failed the vehicle was completely immobilized and would turn on but would not "start" leaving me stranded. Away from home. The local Chevrolet dealership confirmed the becm was at fault the vehicle gave no clear indication of a pending becm failure before the failure.

54 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/26/2023

Becm module is failing currently we have an engine check light that illuminates every other drive. Started November 26th. We experienced reduced propulsion message . We have experience the car not going into gear to drive or go reverse. It seems these issues occur at random. Check light codes are u2619-u2624. A dealership will be taking a look at the car on Monday.

55 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2023

Becm failure, covered by warranty but required towing that I had to pay out of pocket. Have been waiting a week for the repair to be completed and the dealer is refusing to provide a loaner vehicle.

56 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2023

Loss of motive power due to egr valve. I was driving down the highway when I experienced a loss of motive power and the Volt entered a reduced power state while in moving traffic. After the ev battery ran out and the ice turned on, the following message showed up on the instrument panel "propulsion power is reduced" and the check engine light turned on. The Volt slowed down and would not accelerate to the speed of the moving traffic. I was able to get off the highway and drive home under reduced power which was still not safe. The engine ran very rough on the way home and was not able to maintain speed high enough for the flow of traffic on the roads. The dealer diagnosed the issues as a failed egr valve. The part was on backorder for about a month. In that time, a gm trained technician deemed the car operable (according to gm standards) and said that I could take it back and drive it on electricity only. Unfortunately, that meant that the ev range is about 40 miles in winter after a full charge and running out of electricity would again result in a hazardous loss of power. The behavior of the car under this reduced propulsion is identical to the one in investigation pe23022 - loss of motive power due to the battery energy control module. The chevy Volt egr valve issue is a common problem reported in other NHTSA complaints and Volt forum posts and I am surprised that there has not been a recall. I hope that this issue is investigated same as the becm issue. . Read more...

57 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2023

This vehicle has a very dangerous malfunction. There was no power when I tried to move out of the way of an out-of-control semi truck while driving on the highway by pressing the pedal. I made every effort to maneuver because I was terrified. But because of the power outage, I could have died. This is really worrying, and I hope you can address the issue raised by chevy so that someone else might be spared and so that future generations of electric cars are constructed to a standard that includes safety. Thank you.

58 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2023

Vehicle suddenly would not function. All systems became inoperable. When serviced it was determined to be a sudden failure of the becm module which required total replacement. Part was on national back order leaving vehicle unusable for weeks.

59 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2023

The vehicle stopped operating on the highway suddenly and without warning and would not restart. I had it towed to the Chevrolet dealer. They determined power train parts were required which were backordered. They are unclear on which parts. The car has been at the dealer for 2 months waiting for parts. They have no estimate on when they will have the parts. I am concerned about the reliability issue and also that they don't have the parts to fix it for months on end.

60 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2023

Check engine light has been on since oct of 2023 due to needing egr valve. Dealership placed order for part number 12691147 in oct and says it has been on backorder from gm with no estimated delivery date. I just placed an order for the same part via gm parts center. Again, says on backorder. Is there anyway to get a hold of gm parts to escalate getting this? we cannot get the car inspected with this issue and are worried about the safety of the car.

61 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/23/2023

Random no starts, engine turns on at random, won’t charge, car jerks, hesitation while driving, hard to climb mountain roads, battery energy control module lost communication with hybrid/ev battery interface control module 1-12.

62 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2023

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle suddenly lost motive power, after which a message displayed, "propulsion power reduced". There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who determined that the drivetrain fluid needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 78,000.

63 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/16/2023

My Chevrolet Volt at 66,xxx miles had a battery energy control module (becm). We bought the vehicle used three months ago from a dealer, but are just now seeing that the becm is a very common complaint for Chevrolet Volts. This issue leaves the driver stranded and the vehicle bricked without the unit being able to be moved as it cannot be moved into neutral in order to be moved to safety.

64 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2023

The egr valve had failed, causing a check engine light, which turned into a blown fuse. The fuse blowing left the vehicle stranded until I unplugged the egr valve and replaced the fuse. I drove it to a shop, where they replaced the valve and the car has been functional since then.

65 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2023

The vehicle suddenly, and unexpectedly lost propulsion while driving. The vehicle is no longer able to turn on or drive. I contacted several chevy official dealers and took the car in for repair. They said it is a problem with the hybrid battery system. But the car is no longer manufactured and parts are no longer available. So I am now stuck with a car that is non-operational and not repairable.

66 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2023

I was driving on the freeway and the engine turned off. I was able to continue driving as the hybrid system still had some charge to continue powering the car. I had to get the egr valve replaced. No warning lights prior to this occuring but had check engine light after. Car would not shift into drive nor would it accept a charge for the main drive battery. Had to be towed to a shop and resulted in getting the battery energy control module (becm) replaced.

67 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2023

Same issue as pe23022 and TSB 18-na-261 called 51 parts wharehouses and chevy dealers to locate part. They all report the same: part is not available and no idea when it will be come available. Vehicle is not mobile without working part. Vehicle has lost propulsion while driving. Twice I was lucky no one was behind or on the side of me that I could pull off to the side of the road or a parking lot.

68 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2023

Egr valve failed. Dealer supplied part has been on back order for more than five months.

69 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2023

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that while parked, the transmission was shifted into reverse (r); however, the vehicle failed to reverse. Additionally, the contact stated that while the transmission was shifted into drive (d) the vehicle failed to move. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, who informed the contact that the bcm needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000.

70 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2023

Battery energy control module (becm) loss of power or reduced power mode occurred came with little to no warning. Hybrid battery wouldn’t accept a charge in its battery.
