Chevrolet Volt owners have reported 57 problems related to seats (under the seats category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Chevrolet Volt based on all problems reported for the Volt.
The passenger front seat occupancy sensor is faulty causing the air bag to not be armed while passenger is in seat. Sometimes the air bag will be on but when passenger moves in seat or we hit a bump the air bag light goes off. It will cost $989. 00 to fix for a sensor inside seat is what dealer told me. This is a problem several other owners are having.

While in motion my car sporadically displays "service air bag system. " upon diagnosis, dealer stated the passenger presence module needed to be replaced. This car is only 5 years old with 77,000 miles. Seems like a serious safety hazard for this item to be failing. Researching Chevrolet Volt owner forum yields numerous cases of this same issue.
Airbag warning light and passenger air bag. Was told by a dealer that it was the passenger detection sensor not working and needs a 1,000 dollar fix to replace the sensor. Air bag system will not enable with full size passenger in front seat.
I would like to file a complain regarding a "service air bag" light present in my car. The light turns on suddenly regardless a passenger is present or not. It happens when the car is in motion or parked. I took the car to be inspected and the codes given were: b0081 and b0074 (passenger presence malfunction) the technician explained to me that if the part was not changed the passenger airbag may not deploy in case of an accident. My car has not been involved in an accident; it has not been exposed to any liquids that might have caused damage. The estimate provided and repairs were $980 (part only: $500) plus tax. So far, I was very satisfied with the quality of this car but it is very disappointing that something that is not negligence of the driver is not covered in the manufacturing warranty. Upon stumbling with this issue I realized that it is a common malfunction of this car from other owners as well. I would kindly ask you to take into consideration this issue and investigate it so that the company can issue a recall and customers no longer have to choose between a voluntary repair or not having a passenger airbag in case of an accident in such modern car.
Service air bag light and sound alert began going off random times and now it comes on all the time. I did not realize this indicator meant my air bag would not deploy in case of an accident and the repair for this sensor issue is on the owner. This should not be the case, this is a serious safety issue. The repair estimate of $800-$1200 is not acceptable. I attempted to go to an independent repair shop in hopes of resolving within my budget but due to Chevrolet patent on the parts and tools needed for repair independent shops cannot help me. This should be considered a recall as it impairs the safety of drivers and passengers.
The passenger airbag seatbelt sensor faulty and gives notice on display. Intermittently stops turning on passenger airbag when someone is sitting in it. I has been doing this for about 3 years and does it everytime while driving. I have seen hundreds of posts online with the same issue. This is the second time I have filed this same complaint with no response.
While driving the airbag light came on for the passenger airbag. It would come on and go off even while someone was sitting in the seat the airbag would just turn off and then turn back on.
Passenger pressence module sensor gets detoriated when the passenger seat moves back and forth. Basically ruining the too short wiring connecting to the sensors. This makes the airbag nondeployable. The computer thinks no one is sitting there, essentially. This occurred while driving and goes on and off, but has stayed on consistently.
Service air bag warning during or shortly after someone sits in front passenger seat. Also see the passenger air bag light illuminates "off" for extended period. Dealer states it is not able to duplicate the issue. Has been happening for the past year. Believe this is a known defect, and also a safety hazard, as air bag may not deploy in a collision.
In my used Chevrolet Volt 2012, the airbag light has come on. I took it to a Chevrolet dealership and they said that the passenger presence module wasn't functioning, and so it was causing the airbag light to go on and thus making my airbags inoperable. Chevrolet says that my car is out of warranty, but this issue is widely reported on Chevrolet Volt forums, and makes the car unsafe to operate as their are no working airbags when I drive it. Chevrolet wants me to pay for the repair, but something like a module that detects whether or not a passenger is present should not be a wear-and-tear item like tires or even an engine. I don't think its reasonable to say that this is operater error, and instead I believe it is manufacturer error and by not doing the right thing and correcting their design flaw and manufacturer defect, Chevrolet is causing many Volt drivers to operate unsafe vehicles that have no operable airbag or pay a large amount of money for a new passenger side seat with a new presence module. Through research on forums, many Chevrolet Volt drivers have already paid anywhere from $500-$1200 for this repair, and I believe they should also receive compensation. I have not paid to have this fixed yet and am still trying to find a resolution with Chevrolet, but as it is a widespread issue, I thought the nhsta should know about it and do something to protect consumers. The car has never been in an accident, and I have no idea why the airbag light came on in the first place.
My 2012 Chevrolet Volt has had a failure with the passenger air bag presence sensor. As a result, the passenger air bag indicator has been going on and off intermittently while someone is riding in the passenger seat. This has been happening since 2017. It has gotten worse over time and is usually off when it should be on. My passengers no longer feel safe. This is a failure that could result in the passenger’s death if the air bag fails to deploy in a crash. The repair cost from the dealer is also unreasonably expensive at over $1,000. The part alone costs $400 and requires proprietary dealer programming equipment for installation. A critical safety failure like this should be immediately recalled and fixed at no cost to the owner. This is not an isolated incident and has been widely reported across the internet.
Service passenger airbag warning came on continuously. Two trips to the dealer, first time they tried to fix by cleaning a connection $196 and it did not work. Second time they had to replace the passenger presence sensor $636. 70. This was not covered under warranty I was told. Car had 68514 miles and was in service 4 years.
The air bag sensor warning light is on and air bag will not work for passenger seats. Per the dealership there is an issue with the airbag sensor that they are aware of the cost of repair is 800. To replace the airbag sensor module. They said placing a cell phone or laptop on the seat causes the malfunction but there is no recall at this point. I can't believe placing an electronic on a seat causes the module to go bad and they will not replace the module.
When unoccupied, the driver information display shows "check airbag" and the red indicator on the drivers display indicates that the passenger airbag is disabled. This problem has gone from intermittent to consistent over the past year.
Passenger seat occupancy sensor intermittent failure. Should be added to investigation pe19013. Airbag light and service airbag message is on 7 out of 10 times the car is turned on and no passenger or item is in the passenger seat(while stationary). Light will turn off after several minutes of driving or applying force to the bottom of the empty passenger seat. Driving with a passenger the light is usually off, however sometimes it will come on with a passenger present and vehicle in motion, and can be resolved by the passenger shifting their weight a few times. Issue is too hard to demonstrate to dealer and would cost too much for me to bother repairing on my own. Other models from Chevrolet during that time period use the same sensor and have been recalled or are pending a recall. This problem first started when I purchased the car in 2016 but much more infrequently. It has become more and more common gradually ever since. Seat has not had anything spilled on it, or rain let in from open windows etc.
The passenger's seat detector for airbag is not functional. There's a report at my dealer (action Chevrolet) of the default. I also filed a complaint at the gm customer service and aftersales and was told that they would not pay for the seat component involved beeing outside my 60,000 km warranty (was a little over then!). This is not the result of a misuse or water spill on the seat. I feel that the security of my family is jeopardised by this defect. The cost of repair is important and exceeds our budget of operation for that car. Learning now that many Volts of those years were affected by this important problem, I feel that it qualifies for a recall and fixing by gm. Thank you for treating my demand accordingly. My airbag sensor intermittently comes in and off. I took it to a Chevrolet dealership and they said it was the passenger seat airbag sensor and that it would cost about $900. I have read on a Volt forum that this is happening to many of us. This should be covered by gm.
My 2012 Chevrolet Volt started experiencing problems with the sensor that detects the weight of a individual in the seat. The problem has progressively gotten worse and began around 19,000 miles. It has gotten to a point where if I have a passenger in the car, the air bag warning light will come on after they exit the car. Several other owners in the Volt owners club and various other forums have experienced a similar issue. In my car the air bag warning light comes on when someone rides in the passanger seat and then gets of. The "service air bag" message will stay on untiil I turn of the car or push the seat cushion with my hand. The problem is that gm is not covering the cost on a car with less than 32,000 miles. Leaving customers with a bill of 800 dollars to fix a component that should last the lifetime of the car. As time progresses it seems to problem is becoming more common place and owners are stuck with the bill. The biggest problem is that the airbag may fail to deploy in the event of a crash.
Passenger seat belt sensor went bad and was required to be replaced by gm.
My airbag light on the dash has been on for a very long time now and I just read an article the other day that thousands of complaints have been made over this same issue. I have a snap-on scanner for reading obd2 ports on a large amount of vehicles and when I plug mine up to my Volt it tells me it is the sensor in the seat. I have already replaced this sensor once. The dealer tried to rob me in trying to charge me over 800. 00 for this very simple repair. Needless to say it is out yet again and gm knows there are scores of problems with the Volt but they wont properly address them. I had a 2017 Volt that caught fire and burnt to the ground. What did they do about it? not a damn thing. I sincerely hope the feds make them do something to address this vehicle as lives are on the line.
While coming to a stop at a moderate rate of deceleration, I noticed that my drivers seat had forward/backward play in it. The issue was identified when coming to a stop and noticing that my seat back shifted forward (~1/2" of play). I was able to replicate the issue at a stop by shifting my weight in the seat. All motion appears to source from the reclining mechanism, not the seat rails. This issue was presented to the Chevrolet dealership but the response was that the issue was identified in a new vehicle so it was labeled as "intended operation. " a repeat investigation in September 2014 also produced the same response. As an integral part of the safety system in the vehicle, it is inappropriate for a seat to have play in the reclining mechanism and equally as inappropriate for that to be considered "intended operation. " the passenger seat does not exhibit these issues, and a review of the gm-volt. Com forums indicates that while the problem exists in other vehicles, it is by no means universal across the model.
