There is a known issue where the transfer case motor will erratically fail causing multiple safety issues. The car is awd with a 2 speed 4wd selector. The motor can shift into neutral on its own disabling the gear selectors park function ( it is used when towing the vehicle and disconnects the transmission from the drive train). It happened to me in a parking lot and fortunately it was on level ground or the car could have rolled away when I went into a store. I only discovered what had happened after I started the car and could not get it into forward or reverse. I turned the engine off and put the gear selector in park, got out and I was able to move the car by pushing, after a google search indicated it might be in neutral. I found a procedure online to remove the transfer case from neutral and it worked. There is a tiny hidden button on the 4wd selector panel to put the vehicle in neutral for towing and an extremely faint indicator light that come on when it is in towing neutral. The motor has intermittently started shifting in to 4wd and 4wd low on its own and then back to awd. Again this is a known issue as there are literally hundreds of reports of people having to replace the motor. Also if the 4wd shifts into low at highway speeds it will cause catastrophic transmission failure and loss of vehicle control. Also reports of the system going into towing neutral at highway speeds causing potentially dangerous situations. Again this is not the shift lever neutral but the 4wd transfer case disengaging the entire drivetrain. I have had it shift into 4wd low (which locks all the differentials together and is only for off-road or snow) which made it extremely had to steer because of the lack of the differentials. Moving the selector switch did return the transmission to awd and I was forced to park the car. It returned to normal after turning the car off and restarting it. This is a very common issue on Chrysler/Dodge vehicle with 4wd options and needs addressing.

The vehicle was parked outside. Probable transmission issue. The vehicle was in park. I started the vehicle using the remote start and the vehicle lurched forward several inches then settled back were it was. The outside temperature had been +- zero for several days. It did not repeat after being warmed up. It has never happened before. 116,000 miles.
I had trouble with a humming noise and popping under my vehicle for a few months. The humming got so loud that we could not hear each other talk to one another at all. It popped pulling out, going around a curve, going backwards, or slowing down. The humming stopped all of a sudden after it got very loud. My Aspen then fell toward the right side and smoke started shooting out from the passenger back tire when driving it. I then took it to the mechanic. He said it was very bad. The rear axle and rear axle bearing are destroyed and it will need a new rear end. This vehicle had no8 rear pinion nut recall completed on 1/13/2014. If the recall really solves the 2009 Aspen problem of the rear end axle and axle bearings from being destroyed then why am I now having to get a new rear end in December of 2019. I see complaints all over the internet about this problem with the vehicle after the recall was completed so now people are paying for repairs out of pocket. A $2500+ repair for a vehicle is an awful product flaw that Chrysler is not being responsible for. I have had cars for 20 years that I never had to pocket money like that for all their repairs together.
Tl- the contact owns a 2007 Chrysler Aspen. Failing lifters and camshaft which is happening to over 5000 separate owners across the united states. The lifters and camshaft fail no matter how well you keep up your maintenance. I had the cam and lifters replaced twice once at 98000 miles by Chrysler and now I need them replaced again at 195000 miles which very common with owners of this engine.
My four wheel drive automatically engages. Dealer wants me to spend money on parts and are only guessing that those parts will fix the problem. Not once have they checked the wiring. The engagement happens when stationary (unlocking the car). Sometimes when I turn at very low speeds. The lights come one when driving high speed but nothing happens. The following lights turn 4wheel service, electronic stability. I feel it is a wiring problem.
My 2008 Aspen was built during the same time as the 2009 model year that had the faulty pinion nuts/shaft. Right at 170,k our pinion bearing is bad. I believe they same parts were used and Dodge refuses to work with me. Thankfully it has not broke yet but the truck is needing to be in the shop.
Tl- the contact owns a 2007 Chrysler Aspen. The contact stated while driving, the vehicle would go into four wheel on its on. No warning lights illuminated during the failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer: autonation Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram roseville 200 automall dr, roseville, CA 95661 who could not duplicate the failure . The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 170,00. Hk.
The svc 4wd indicator light won't go off and the vehicle is stuck in 4x4.
Tl-the contact owns a 2008 Chrysler aspin. The contact stated that the -vehicle's transmission some how shifted into 4 wheel drive and locked up. This caused the front wheels to lock up and not move. The contact was able to guide the vehicle to the side of the road . The contact smelled burning rubber right before the incident. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who said that the four wheel drive was malfunctioning. The mechanic initially fixed the issue by shifting the transmission back from four wheel drive to the normal gears. The issue recurred again with all four wheels locking up. The dealer and manufacturer had not been contacted yet. The failure mileage was 191,000. Tf.
While driving, the vehicle intermittently slipped into 4-wheel drive low. Vehicle immediately became hard to steer/move in this condition, dangerous to drive as the vehicle's handling could change at any moment. . . At any speed.
Takata recall. The contact owns a 2007 Chrysler Aspen 4x4. The contact stated that the wheels randomly locked and the traction control warning indicator randomly flashed. As a result, the power steering was extremely affected and the steering wheel was difficult to maneuver as the front and rear wheels locked up. In addition, the four wheel drive indicator randomly flashed and the gears independently shifted at a low rate of speed. The vehicle was not inspected and diagnosed by a dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was also included in NHTSA campaign number: 16v352000 (air bags). The approximate failure mileage was 147,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
Chrysler case #: 29959728 vehicle description: Chrysler Aspen limited 4x2 sport utility 4-door I attempted to reach out to my case manager haley and my link has been disabled and her voicemail has yesterday's date. I have not received a call today from anyone at Chrysler corp regarding my case. I did speak today with mopar vehicle protection and they stated when Chrysler placed the max care coverage on my Aspen, they were suppose to place the powertrain wrap with the max care coverage. Per my vehicle info and the sales rep, Chrysler lifetime powertrain warranty was included with my vehicle purchase. I have spoken with jake and meka also with regards to this case and was advised by meka, my case manager should be contacting me back. Seeking assistance since haley x40612 is not in the office.
I began accelerating onto a ramp to enter onto a major highway and my Aspen completely loss all power suddenly. The engine just shut down including power all electronics. I had to let the car glide to the shoulder, put it in park and restart the car, which it stared as it always has. This has never happened before nor did it happen again. I had the car checked out and they couldn't find anything wrong. Being that this happened while entering a busy highway, a serious accident could have been caused.
For no known reason my 2009 Chrysler Aspen 4x4 will engage on its own, I have repeatedly taken it in to the dealership (which by the way is horrible) they can not figure out what the problem is . However since I have a lifetime warranty they have claimed I need every single part covered under the warranty with not results. The first time I called the dealership regarding this I was told to bring the truck in immediately as this is an extremely dangerous problem due to the fact when it is engaged the truck will loose power. It engaged while I was on the freeway doing 70 mph and dropped instantly to 20 mph and would not go over 35mph. My overhead console, dash and radio at random go out. According to the dealership I needed a new radio 3 times each time the radio would start working again for the same reason it stopped, unknown. I turn on the turn signal they flash between left, right and hazard.
First I must start out by saying this vehicle has been a nightmare since buying from a dealership who has refused to correct any of the problems in any fashion mainly because they're not a Chrysler dealership. The day after we bought the vehicle the vehicle stalled on us due to a dead battery. Not a big deal, but it was only the beginning to a wide range of problems. While taking the truck for a required state inspection, the truck somehow managed to roll forward from a parked position when reverse had been selected. It was parked on an incline no more than a 10 degree angle and ended up rolling/crashing into the curb. I immediately contacted the dealership to voice my concern/anger and they agreed to look into the problem but to no avail. Not long afterwards we had some heavy rain I believe the following week and we realized the roof was leaking along the passenger side pillar right into the vents. This I believed led to some electrical issues with the radio as my wife said if often "flickered" and "cut in and out". This was also brought to the dealerships attention and again nothing was done; however they did clean the drains which they said caused the leaking. I had also voiced my concerns to Chrysler and was basically told until they have enough documented issues, nothing can be done. Now, my wife and I hadn't filled this truck up to this point as yet, but the first time we did the gas overflowed and gushed out of the vehicle spilling everywhere. I initially thought the pump nozzle was faulty but after the second time at a different gas station I was convinced the problematic vehicle was to blame. . Read more...
The contact owns a 2008 Chrysler Aspen. While driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle stalled and the traction control warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the drive train needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 75,000.
The contact owns a 2008 Chrysler Aspen. Two years ago, an independent mechanic diagnosed that the pinion nut was loose and needed to be tightened. The vehicle was repaired. The vehicle was taken to another independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the differiental needed a pinion seal. The vehicle was repaired again, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 13v038000 (power train) as a possible solution, but the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 49,000.
Description to be sent by email immediately following this transmission. Description email will bear this temporary file number. On a weekday sometime in may 2014, I stopper at a stop sign, without he engine fully heated up, turned the wheel over to make a left turn and pressed the accelerator pedal. Despite the fact that I had depressed the accelerator pedal, approximately 5% of travel, the engine remained at the standard 650 rpm curb idle speed. Holding my foot at that position, the engine remained at curb idle for approximately three seconds. The red throttle control lightening bolt illuminated on the instrument panel. Engine operation was otherwise normal. After about three seconds, the engine increased speed normally, the red light went off and I drove off without further malfunction. The check engine light did not illuminate at any time. At some point, in June 2014. The same malfunction occurred again. When opening the throttle from a standing start, the engine refused to respond to the throttle and remained at curb idle for approximately three seconds. The red throttle control light remained on for approximately three seconds, and the engine then resume normal operation. Again, the check engine light did not illuminate. For months, there was a very mild low rpm flat-spotting symptom. Specifically, once the car was in motion, small openings of the throttle produced only very mild acceleration, without hesitation. Pushing the throttle down a little further produced normal acceleration without a downshift. On July 19, 2014, I left the dealership and pulled out onto a feeder road. I noticed the flat-spotting again on the throttle opening at low rpm. I pulled into a parking lot, put the car in park and turned off the engine. I turned the key to on and once again followed the slowly depress fully calibration procedure. This procedure involved fully removing my foot from the pedal, at the end of the procedure. I turned the key off and then re-started the car. Instantly upon firing, the engine went to a 4000 rpm idle and stayed there. Updated 08/19/14.
The contact owns a 2008 Chrysler Aspen 4x4. The contact stated that when shifting from park into drive, the vehicle rapidly accelerated and crashed into the wall of the garage. The contact then shifted into reverse and the vehicle rapidly accelerated backward, crashing into the home a second time with one half of the vehicle penetrating the house. The vehicle struck a child and caused injuries to both of the child¿s legs. A police report was not filed. The contact was not injured. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the incident. The failure mileage was 72,000.
My husband's truck and my Aspen are both affected by the n08 recall for rear axle pinion nut. We received the first notice of this recall several months ago, but the notice told us that the parts needed for repair were not available and that we would receive a second notice when they were. We have now received the second notice and I have called our local dealer, southern Chrysler Dodge Jeep, in lufkin, texas two times but they only had 3 or 4 of the parts come in and those are already promised to other customers. My husband and I are driving around in these vehicles with our 6 year old son, and no one is able to tell us when we might be able to have this fixed because they do not know when they will receive another shipment and each future shipment will most likely only be 3 or 4 parts. I would like to have the parts shipped to our dealership, reserved in our names, with instructions for them to contact us upon arrival. (2010 Dodge ram 1500 & 2009 Chrysler Aspen), or they can be shipped to us directly.
The contact owns a 2009 Chrysler Aspen. The contact stated that NHTSA campaign number 13v038000 (power train) had exceeded a reasonable time for repair. The recall notification was received by the contact several months ago. The dealer was contacted and advised that they were unable to obtain the part from the manufacturer. The contact had not experienced a failure.
On 18 November 2010 around 6 pm, my vehicle was parked in the driveway of my home approximately three feet from the garage entrance. To move the vehicle into the garage for the night, I got in the vehicle, closed the door, stepped on the brake, let off the emergency brake, started it, put the transmission in d, let off the brake, and did not touch the gas pedal. The engine immediately cycled up to 4000 rpm, and the vehicle immediately started moving forward. I then hit the brake to no effect on speed. The vehicle proceeded through the garage, impacted my steel workbench/tool container, went through the back wall and the front end impacted the ground seven feet below the garage dropoff and the engine turned off. The air bags did not deploy. I removed the key and got out of the vehicle. My neighbors witnessed the event as the vehicle drove out the back of the garage. Fortunately I was not injured, but went to the emergency room at ft belvoir amc. Since I have owned this vehicle, we have experienced a hole in the ac compressor, flickering of the drivers side foot well light, loss of ignition while driving and when the transmission is placed in r it would fall out of gear. All were reported over the last three years at Chrysler dealers in CA, ms and va. I reported this to Chrysler late November and received a letter back on 17 December from Chrysler customer claims resolution group stating the found no problems with the vehicle that may have contributed to this accident. I found online that Chrysler had vehicles recalled in 2007 that had accelerator problems and the accelerators were made by the same supplier that made the Toyota ones. . Read more...
2007 Chrysler Aspen (with only 4000 miles) began making a loud grinding noise when switching from drive, neutral, reverse, etc. I took the vehicle in to the dealership on a Tuesday afternoon. After a 1 1/2 hour wait the service representative advises me that they took a look at the vehicle and it is making a loud unusual noise when the vehicle is placed in gear. The service representative advises me that I need to bring the vehicle back later in the week and leave it with them - because they are going to have to take it apart to find out what the problem is. I return on Thursday morning drop off the vehicle at 7:30 am and at about 3:31pm the service representative calls me and advises me that the vehicle has been repaired - they adjusted the "slack adjuster" and tightened some of the bolts on the shaft and put it back together. When I arrive at the dealership to pick up my vehicle, the service order stated that they tested 2 other vehicles (the same make, year, and model) and that all the vehicles make the same noise - no repairs needed. Either the service representative told me a story or the technician is telling a story. I was very much concerned when I read the service order. The question is what was done to the vehicle? what was wrong with it? of course I had to speak to another service representative because the one that I was dealing with had left for the day and so had the service manager. When I advise the service representative of what I had been told and what the service order stated. He apologized and stated there was nothing he could do, because he had not handled the service order. He stated unfortunately they had, several customer complaints about the loud unusual noise and that Chrysler had been notified, but at the present moment Chrysler had no resolution on how to fix the problem and until they came up with a resolution there was nothing they could do. I drove the vehicle home and it still made the same noise ? nothing was repaired.
