Five problems related to steering rack have been reported for the 2000 Chrysler Concorde. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Chrysler Concorde lxi, model year 2000, mileage 71930: leaving driveway, turning right, upon trying to center steering wheel after turn, it would not turn back to the left and I ran off the road to the right. Minor damage. Backed out and only could steer left with extreme effort. Managed to get car back into the driveway. Call mechanic, told me rack and pinion had failed - common problem on 2000 Concorde. If I had been traveling at highway speeds, this would have been really bad.
Backing out of our garage (straight without turning) at home; the steering wheel suddenly didn't respond to any action from driver (my wife) after a "snapping sound" was heard. No prior accident or known damage to trigger this. If this would have happened while driving on a highway or other busy artery, the outcome might have been with personal and/or material consequences. Hopefully this wasn't the case. This is a Chrysler concord xi 2000 with 38,000 miles, and overall in pristine conditions.
Chrysler 2000 Concorde lxi steering rack failure.
Rack & pinion steering & now wheel bearings.
While turning, the steering wheel locked up temporarily. The shop mechanic determined that problem pertained to the steering rack. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. The steering loss was intermittent over a period of two days. The steering wheel was loose and would lock up at times.
