Car stopped at red light. Engine died and smoke began to rise from engine compartment, then flames shot out. Driver could not get door open at first then after short time locks released and driver was able to escape. Fire department extinguished flames and said fire appeared to be started by fluid leakage. This model had been subject to recall due to fires. Car had recall fix on 9/23/04. It now appears the recall fixes were not permanent and the original problem can recur. It is potentially life threatening. Attempts to discuss the problem with Chrysler were unsuccessful. Chrysler stone walled and falsely rigged their response procedure so as to avoid any responsibility. Chrysler refused to allow me to speak with any person in a position of authority. The clerks I spoke with stated that someone would be in touch with me. Finally after three attempts to speak with someone at Chrysler, and after more than one month from original contact, a letter dated may 13, 2015 was received from Chrysler stating they had tried numerous times to contact us and the claim would be dropped if we did not respond in 10 days. This quite simply is a lie! no attempt was ever made to contact us, even after we contacted Chrysler on three occasions asking to speak with someone. The letter instructed us to contact dekra automotive to arrange an inspection. We did and gave them all the information once again. We offered to send photos of the damage but dekra was not interested. On may 27 we received a letter stating they were unable to inspect the car since it had been sold (salvaged) and were closing the file. Thus, Chrysler had created circumstances through obfuscation and manipulating the response time which they felt relieved them of any responsibility, even the need to discuss the issue with us. This fire hazard still exists.

I proceeded to continue driving I went about another mile and the car started losing power. Unknown to me but the car was already on fire. Someone behind me alerted me and within a minute or two the Pt Cruiser was engulfed in flames.

The Pt Cruiser 2005 turbo was purchased new and currently has 68,296 miles. The vehicle has shut off on numerous occasions while we were driving. We immediately contacted cerritos Dodge Chrysler Jeep (cerritos, CA) and glen e. Thomas (signal hill,CA} and both serviced veicle. Neither dealers fixed the problem. The last time we paid a service technician almost $100 to just ride around with us to see if vehicle would stop. Again nothing was done. After finally bringing the car back 6 times for the same problem, within a 12 week period, they told us to contact the corporate division at Chrysler because they would not service our vehicle. The most recent occurence was in September 2011( which put others life in danger) we were driving on the freeway at 60 miles/hr. The car just shut off, again without any warning. We are afraid to drive the vehicle on a regular basis, for fear of risking the lives of others and ourselves. We are currently seeking a recall because we know of other owners
who has experienced the same problem.

Date: January 9, 2012 current case file #21570150; previous case file #21250626. To date, Chrysler dealerships have not been able to diagnose and consequently fix a reoccurring stalling problem with the above referenced vehicle; a problem that first occurred in October of 2010. The mckinney dealership in easley, SC first attempted a fix, then the big o dealership in greenville, SC (twice), and most recently the benson dealership in greer, SC. Overall, the vehicle has been out of service 3 weeks and 2 days while at these dealerships. Mckinney's attempt occurred while the vehicle was under the Chrysler extended warranty. Big o and benson's attempts have been made after the expiration of the warranty (from time, not mileage), as a follow up to a pre-existing condition. Meanwhile, between attempted fixes the vehicle poses a safety hazard, actually putting Chrysler at a liability risk. A stalling vehicle in heavy, fast moving traffic has a high potential of creating an accident, an injury, or even a death. In reality a very serious accident almost occurred recently on interstate 26 in hendersonville, nc as a tractor trailer was following the vehicle when it went into a stall. Fortunately, the shoulder of the highway gave an escape route from being run down. Wide shoulders are not always available for escape. Additionally, within the time frame beginning in 2010, we have not been offered an opportunity to speak with a Chrysler area representative and have not had the best CO-operation from the Chrysler case managers in auburn hill, mi. Without Chrysler offering the options of fixing , trading or buying back the vehicle, we must exercise other options available to us. Note: this vehicle was purchased new and I have been the only owner.
The contact owns a 2001 Chrysler Pt Cruiser. Upon starting the vehicle, the contact smelled a strong odor of gasoline. She also noticed fuel leaking underneath the front hood. Through online research, she discovered NHTSA campaign id numbers 02v214000 and 02v215000, but her VIN was excluded from both recalls. The dealer stated that they could not assist with any repairs and would not assume liability. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was unable to be entered into the system. The failure and current mileages were less than 39,000. Remailed 10/20/09.
Very poor mpg on 2006 Pt Cruiser turbo with 18,000 miles, premium chevron/shell/union 76 fuel only. Approx 12. 9 city and maybe 15. 5 highway. In shop three times with issue, never improved.

Vehicle made a rattling noise when accelerating. Consumer stated gas was leaking into the engine.
I smell strong fuel while driving. As far as I can recall, the smell occurs while the air conditioning is on. Since I live in texas, my air conditioning is almost always on, so the fuel smell is a constant reminder. I checkd if my air circulation knob is turned to interior only. That didn't matter. The smell of fuel is there whether air circulation is external or internal. I believe there was a recall related to fuel/gasoline delivery problems for make : Chrysler model : Pt Cruiser year : 2002 NHTSA campaign id number : 02v215000 recall date : Aug 07, 2002 component: fuel system, gasoline:delivery I don't know if my problem is the same as 2002 model recalls. Please investigate and advise. I couldn't tell if this leads to fire or injury to myself and family. Thanks for your help!.
The vehicle fuel supply tube failed.
