While driving the vehicle I could begin to smell a strong odor of gas them almost like the smell of plastic melting and the vehicle engine started running hot temperature so I immediately turned off the engine as I pulled over to the side of the road and as I stepped out of the car aflame began under the hood and ended up burning my entire engine. Fire department had to come and extinguish the car.

I accelerated to get up to highway speed and the gas pedal stuck going 65mph. I put both feet on the brake at full pressure and the car kept accelerating. I put into neutral and braked, then pull the e-brake and pulled over to the shoulder of the highway. Very dangerous, scary malfunction - the mechanic says the accelerator throttle and cable are broken. A search of the internet shows other people have had this happen in different years and models of Pt Cruisers.

Quick connect fitting on the plastic fuel line at firewall leaks fuel, which is a fire hazard. The plastic fuel line from there to the engine was replaced a year ago, but now it leaks again. From what I hear, this is a very common problem on these cars. The o-rings can't handle the constant rotational motion because of the rocking of the engine back and forth. Chrysler should engineer a proper fix.

Just purchased this car 3 days ago. The main fuel line started to leak today near the rear engine firewall, where there is a connection to some kind of valve. Very visible fuel leak at the connector. This is a fire hazard due to the fuel line leak being directly above the exhaust. Chrysler will do nothing about this issue and as I have seen on many forums regarding this vehicle type and this same issue, this is a very common problem that the dealer should make right with these vehicles having a "potential fire issue " and recall this vehicle for the fuel issue and most important, it's potential to destroy the vehicle and contents due to a defective fuel connector before someone burns up in this vehicle. I plead with you to have this vehicle recalled due to it's fuel leaking issue. Thank you. Thge fuel leaks while resting in place or in motion. The amount this leak gives out is more than adequate to leak onto the vehicles exhaust and "boom", there goes the vehicle up in flames.
Tl-the contact owned a 2005 Chrysler Pt Cruiser. Started the vehicle and the vehicle stalled. Fuel odor, vehicle would not start for an additional hour vehicle restarted and caught on fire, fire department stated that the fire started along the firewall manufacturer not contacted, fire report filed, fire extinguished by fire department stated that upon start up the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that there was an abnormal fuel odor. The vehicle was then restarted almost an hour later. The contact then noticed fire coming from under the hood of the vehicle on the passenger's side of the vehicle. The fire department was contacted and was able to extinguish the fire. A fire report was filed. The fire marshall stated that the fire seemed to have originated in a wiring harness installed behind the fuel lines for the fuel injectors. There was no injuries sustained in the fire. The vehicle remained at the residence. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were contacted. The vehicle was destroyed. The approximate failure mileage was 145,000. The VIN was not available. Piir = y. Ah.

The contact owns a 2003 Chrysler Pt Cruiser. While driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle started to jerk and stalled without warning while in traffic. The contact restarted the vehicle and was able to resume driving. The failure recurred twice. When the contact looked under the hood, she noticed fuel around the engine and the area where the power steering fluid was located, which caused a fuel odor to emit through the air conditioner blower. The contact also noticed that the rear of the vehicle was leaking fuel, which came from the fuel line. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the VIN was not included in a recall. The approximate failure mileage was 138,528.

Purge control valve is faulty, causing vehicle to stall after fueling. Every. Single. Time. This occurs both at the pump immediately after fueling as well as when the car is in motion, pulling into traffic from the fuel station. The latter has caused safety hazards & near-accidents countless times.
Blinker works at times and not at others. Battery light came on while drivumg, got home now it won't start, battery has full charge but the starter is not cranking.
The contact owned a 2001 Chrysler Pt Cruiser. While the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed white smoke coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle then became engulfed in flames. The contact exited the vehicle and rushed away from the scene. The contact stated that the vehicle exploded. The fire department was contacted and extinguished the fire. It was not indicated if a police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to a salvage yard. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and sent a technician to inspect the vehicle. No further assistance was offered. There were no injuries. The failure mileage was 107,000. The VIN was not provided.

Stalls out while driving, car completely stops and you can't go forward, have to put the car in park and back in drive multiple times in order to even be able to drive. . . Car completely shut off in the middle of a busy road. . .
Driving at various speeds, all warning lights flash on and off, then all guages go up and down dramatically, the loss of power, car comes to stop but engine doesn't die. Turn off engine, then on then same thing 2-3 more x on way home. Dangerous. Due to faulty tipm made by Chrysler? this has happened 20 different days in last month, also battery dead once, engine cooling fan failed twice, rear taillights blew from electrical surges 3x, twice power window wouldn't go. Taken into shop two diff. Occasions but can't repeat problem so they can't fix it. Help! car was on highway several times and on 30-40 mph streets other times.

Fuel line was chafing against the air conditioning service port causing a leak in the fuel line. Fuel was spraying in the engine compartment. Extreme fire hazard.
Fuel line has begun leaking fuel every time you start the car. Have replaced fuel line and continues to leek. Searched on the internet and there is no real fix and Chrysler plastic connection was a poor build making this an issue for almost every Pt Cruiser out there.
Just under 78,000 miles turbo goes out, took to dealership, replaced turbo (took 6 mos) finally returned the vehicle and within 1 month head gasket goes out (blowing white smoke), while driving at 35 mph on a side road (dealer says known problem, wants another $2000 for head gasket, local dealer says "the head gaskets for that car are the weak point, when you return the comp ratio to new/normal with a new turbo. It will blow the head gasket out") replaced myself (cant afford dealer) new head gasket (multi layered pos), new bolts (required), new timing belt, now it wont start, tested all sensors, cam, crank, o/p, water, throttle pos, replaced coil, replaced pcm, chased and inspected all wiring, still nothing engine cranks over, but-it will not start. Mechanics and dealers alike say its normal for this car but they have no idea or reason for it not starting, I keep being told to check this sensor, replace that $300 part, look here, look there, replace that (another$300) again. Chrysler has a known problem with this piece of crap and has never done anything about it I have been fighting this for 4 years now Chrysler needs to repair this and reimburse for all the crap I've had to replace and all the b/s I've gone through. They knew the head gasket would blow out after a new turbo was installed, and did nothing about it, they have known about this no start/no crank issue these cars have, but have never done anything to address or fix the poor condition of their vehicles. Now there's a line that says its possibly the ignition switch that's causing the problem. Sounds to me like they sold the public a lemon and got away with it. Chrysler should be made to fix these pieces of garbage or buy them all back at what they sold for originally I will never buy another Chrysler as long as I live. Not worth even using as a boat anchor.
I am frequently experiencing the following problem which includes the check engine light coming on, the car not wanted to accelerate, feeling like the car is going to stall while driving down the road. One time it did stall in traffic however, it started right back up. The check engine light does go out. I have taken it to several car places and no one has been able to diagnose the problem. This is a serious problem as I am afraid to drive the car. It has happened at varying speeds and weather conditions, from 20 - 60 miles per hour, local road to highways, warm days, cool days and everything in between. It is hard to predict when this will happen but is an issue that should be addressed before something serious happens and people are injured.
Solution! solution! solution! we had the same types of problems as the below problem entry and the first 4 problem entries following this one. Upon investigation, the problem was traced down to a faulty ignition key cylinder. The metal contact on the inside of the cylinder was deformed, thereby causing intermittent contact. When the ignition key cylinder was replaced, it completely solved all of the problems listed. All the dash lights will come on and blink. All gauges go to 0. Sometimes the engine will shut off for a few seconds (no power steering or brakes) then restart all by it's self. I can be parked in the garage or going down the road, that doesn't seem to matter. There's another vehicle in town like mine doing the same thing. The dealer has replaced parts with no positive results.
I first sent this complaint on Mar 7, 2014 and received an email reply acknowledging it, but since haven't heard anything. Is my complaint being taken seriously? it is a serious complaint as follows: on Feb 5, 2014, my 2001 Pt Cruiser shut down while it was being driven down a busy street. It didn't make a sputter or a sound, it just died. Luckily, it coasted long enough for me to pull off onto a quieter street and up against a curb. We had it towed to the automotive shop the explanation for the motor shutting down was alarming. The automotive tech reported the crankshaft position sensor needed replacing. As I understand, when this sensor goes bad, the engine automatically shuts down. With no warning. I had gas in my pt. I don't think people know about this; the tech said most cars that are 'newer' (as far back as 2002, at least) have this sensor. This is a serious safety concern and appears to be widespread. I looked through every page of my 2001 Pt Cruiser owner's manual and didn't find any indication that there would be a problem like this or that the crankshaft position sensor should be tested regularly, if it could be tested, that is. The national highway traffic safety administration would be doing the public a lifesaving service to look into the danger of this failed design, not to just replace them in all cars with a new one, but with one that is not designed to fail at the risk of the drive and anyone else in the vicinity when a moving car decides to just shut down. With no warning. There is not a time frame for this part to fail, but cars that are around my cruisers may be ready to give out. Please look into this dangerous situation. A car can shut down completely while in motion? with no warning? I am mortified that this is possible! is it really possible? but, evidently, it is true, since that's what the tech is replacing. I am thankful that it didn't happen 2 days earlier when I had my elderly mother in the car on the watterson expressway. I bought a Pt Cruiser sedan and the car lot I bought if from said it needed front shocks and it would be ready in two day. I pick up the Pt Cruiser and decided to take it to my mechanic and have it check out from top to bottom. It has over 100 mechanical issues, from shocks which were never put on. There is oil in the spark plugs and leaves a smell when the heater is on which makes us very ill. It is not safe to drive. Also, the car lot I bought it from which it was sold for around $2,000 dollars and needs over $3,000 dollars worth of work. Then I got slapped with an extra 5,000 from the loan company. This is a lemon. I am not paying for anything and him and I have went around and around about this piece of junk. They can repo it and then I am getting an attorney for selling me a car that should not be on the road. Too dangerous.
The contact owns a 2005 Chrysler Pt Cruiser. The contact stated that after inspecting the vehicle he noticed the air conditioner accumulator leaks water onto the fuel lines. The fuel line had rusted through and was leaking fuel. The contact stated the fuel line needed to be replaced and a shield would have to be installed between the air conditioner accumulator and the fuel line. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 96,086.
The car tends to stall when driving in excess of 50, it will jerk a couple of times before going forward. It has been doing this for two weeks, I bought this car about a month ago. When going online to see if others were having this problem, I found it to be a common problem with people seeking and trying all types of solutions. Even taking the car back to the dealership and still having the same stall and rough idling. It appears to be a defect in the manufacturing.

The contact owns a 2007 Chrysler Pt Cruiser. During routine maintenance, the mechanic discovered an oil leak. The dealer stated that the crank shaft and front seal needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 49,232.
In 2006 I purchased a 2005 Pt Cruiser with 12000 miles, it ran great until may,2009 with approx. 28000 miles, when it started spittering and sputtering upon acceleration and would not exceed a speed of 25 for 15 to 25 seconds, sometimes longer. I found this out on a 275 mile round trip up us hwy 40 after stopping to get gas. Upon reentry to hwy 40 with cars traveling 70-85 mph, my car just would not go. I felt my life as well as my husbands was in grave danger. I immediately put my flashers on and stayed on the shoulder of the road until it returned to normal speed. Then while going up hills, or stopped for red lights, stop sign or slowing down to yield, it would again, spitter & sputt and backfire. Upon my arrival back home I took it to my local Chrysler dealer and was told it was in need of a tune up (atl ess than 20000 miles), and I was told by the dealer it was not covered by warranty, which I believed was a unlimited 5 yr/50,000 miles, costing in excess of $300. 00/which I did not and do not have the funds to get repaired. , but still feel this is a danger factor for anyone riding in it. (which I seldom have anyone with me except my husband occasionally. ) the Pt Cruiser is still the same even though I have added gas treatments and fuel injector cleaners trying to resolve this severe, and potentially deadly problem. The car to date only has a little over 35000 miles and is still acting up, and the "check engine" light continues to stay on. I have taken the car to a trusted local mechanic who informed me that it is a tune up problem or the fuel injectors, and that it should have been covered under warranty that was still in effect at the time. (what is the warranty worth? (not life or limb. ) I might add that if I had known of this web site or how to file a complaint when this first happened I would have. Thank you for your interest in the "peoples rights and safety. ".
Rough idle at stopped intersections, lunges and stalls. Stalls a approximately 15-25 mph while making left or right turns making it very difficult to turn while placing the vehicle in neutral and starting the engine again. The fog lights turn on by itself after the vehicle is parked and the ignition is turned off draining the battery. Had to disconnect the fuse in order to prevent this from happening again. To this date non-functional fog lights. The vehicle has several electrical problems from instrument cluster not functioning while driving to radio and climate control not working until you stop the vehicle and turn it off. Then start the vehicle again then it works properly for another few days. This is a reoccurring problem. Wheel bearing has been an issue too and currently needs to be replaced.
A few weeks ago my check oil gas light came on, and so my husband checked my oil(my car only has 22000 miles on it) and when he checked it there wasn't any oil in the car, it was very low. It barley read on the dip stick. After changing my oil, my check oil came on again after 500 miles. Again there wasn't much oil. I took it into the dealership, they said they would mark my oil pan and plug and look at my car every 1000 miles to document on how much oil I am using. They didn't do anything else. I haven't really gotten anywhere with this oil situation. I drive about 26 miles one way to work on major interstate, and I am afraid to get stranded. . .
If you investigate my VIN, you will see that from soon after I bought my car, I had a weird problem where the gauges would go crazy, the dash lights all light up, and sometimes experience full engine shut down, if not just have an accelerator fail while driving. For years, I kept trying to work with Chrysler to allow them to diagnose and fix the issue and they were never able to do so even though I had photos of what was happening. In approximately July 2011, I met someone with a convertible Pt Cruiser like mine and she asked if I had any issues with my car. I described my problem and she said hers had the same problem. She said that a new ignition switch fixed the problem but Chrysler refused to help. I was thrilled and called chryser to report that I had finally figured out the problem. I begged and pled with them to fix it but the best that they could promise was that if the problem turned out to be the ignition switch that I would be reimbursed for the cost of assessing the problem ($200+ for assessment), but not for my time nor would they be able to provide a rental while it was being assessed or fixed. Given that I could not miss work and had little faith that they would admit the problem was theirs, I was forced to allow the problem to continue to exist. When the gm ignition switch problems came out, I called again and eventually someone contacted me to help after several more pleading calls for help failed and I escalated the issue. My ignition switch was replaced and the problem never happened again. I say all of that to say this: please look into convertible Pt Cruiser ignition switches. They are a known issue that was never recalled and a good number of owners replaced on their own. While I appreciate the eventual fix, when informed of the problem for years, Chrysler did not address this clear danger and I endured a great deal of stress in the interim.
After refueling gague still reads empty ,never know how much fuel you have, dealer had car for seven days to run tests could not find the problem so they changed instrement cluster this only lasted 4 on&off cycles and back to same problem.
