general problems of the 1998 Chrysler Sebring

Eight problems related to vehicle speed control have been reported for the 1998 Chrysler Sebring. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2002

Consumer states when slowing down or stopped at a light, the throttle control will not return to idle. Problem occurs intermittenly. Mr.

2 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/26/2002

Consumer's vehicle exprienced the same throttle problem as stated in recall # 02 v 186 000,which resulted in an accident. But this recall was for years 1995/1996, not on 1998. Contacted dealer.

3 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/01/1999

When taking the key out of ignition, vehicle took off and ran into some type of bushes.

4 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/01/1999

When stopping and engine reaches 750 rpm, engine surges by 300 rpm before decreasing to idle at about 650 rpm. If brake is not held tight, car will lurch forward and hit anything in front of it. Dealer says they do not know how to fix problem after several attempts, and with different dealers.

5 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/18/1999

Car suddenly accellerated when placed in drive, causing an accident.

6 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/16/1998

Vehicle was placed in drive and accelerated on its own to a point where rubber was burned prior to hitting the vehicle parked in front. The automatic floor shift was then placed into reverse where the vehicle shot backwards for approximately 40 feet before hitting another parked vehicle, at that point the engine was shut down.

7 Vehicle Speed Control problem

When the vehicle was in reverse and the driver slightly touched the accelerator pedal the vehicle raced backwards which caused an accident and injuries.

8 Vehicle Speed Control problem

When vehicle was started and placed into reverse it pulled off on its own while consumer had the brakes applied, backed into a building very fast, jumping at least seven feet in the air, and landing back on all four wheels before coming to a stop. The dealer has been contacted.
