Five problems related to power steering pump have been reported for the 2005 Chrysler Town & Country. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Power steering pump went bad.
After fill up, vehicle stalls, the engine cuts off and the vehicle loses all power and power steering. This happened first on a cross country trip and caused some serious safety concerns when attempting to exit the gas station and merge onto the highway. This problem has been occurring regularly from the first instance in 2011. When fueling, the van is never over filled; we fill until the pump clicks off. This seems to be a fairly common problem in this generation of minivans as represented in online forums trying to diagnose the problem.
2005 town and country steering problem. Pump is leaking and the dealership says rack needs to be replaced. Dealership said this is a known faulty issue with this years model and it must be done or could lead to a crash.
Power steering pump is making a loud whining noise. Started occurring in the colder months just when the car was started and the wheel was turned. Now a constant noise. Need to replace pump before it goes out and cracks mantle.
Started hearing a groaning type noise from under the hood when turning, backing and certain other conditions about 1 year ago which I figured was the power steering pump. I finally and reluctantly returned to the Chrysler dealer to have it looked at and was told that the steering rack has a leak and that and the power steering pump had to be replaced. Of course my 3/36 warranty had expired in September 07 and I only have 39000 miles on the van. I feel this is a huge problem with these vans and there should be a recall and we should be reimbursed for our expenses which in my case cost me $1350! this could be much more serious with injury occurring if the unit had run dry and I lost control of the steering.
