Possibility that the power steering booster ball stud housing could be undersized. An undersized housing would have reduced strength which could result in a fatigue crack in the area of the ball stud which will reflect in 'free play' of the steering wheel. If a crack in the housing is allowed to progress far enough the ball stud could work loose from the housing and result in a loss of steering control. (correct by replacing undersized housing. )
