The main shaft lock nut may come loose due to an improper fastening of the nut during assembly. The looseness of the nut can prevent shifting from one gear to another or selection of neutral. If the lock nut comes completely loose on the main shaft, greatly increased internal friction in the transmission could result. In extreme cases, the transmission may become totally inoperable. At low speeds, the vehicle could unexpectedly exhibit an effect similar to brake application.

Vehicles will be inspected and tested. If necessary, the main shaft lock nut will be tightened properly at no cost to owner.

Vehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with four speed manualtransmissions. System: power train; main shaft lock nut. Consequences of defect: a vehicle accident without prior warning can result.
