The missing cotter pin allows the axle nut to unscrewand come off the spindle resulting in the wheel assembly coming off the axlewhile the trailer is in motion. This could cause property damage, seriousinjury or death.

Some trailers are missing cotter pins which lock the axle nut into position on the axle.

Each wheel end will be inspected for missing cotter pin and, if a cotter pin is found missing, the trailer is to be removed from service and a wheel end assembly adjustment performed.
