Defect Investigation of False Automatic Emergency Braking

Investigation of False Automatic Emergency Braking

Subject: False automatic emergency braking
Components covered:
  • Forward collision avoidance: automatic emergency braking
Investigations Summary: A defect petition was received by the office of defects investigation (odi) on March 21, 2019 requesting a formal investigation of model year (my) 2017-2018 Nissan rogue vehicles for unintended braking due to the automatic emergency braking (aeb) system engaging with no apparent obstruction in the path of the vehicle. The petitioner alleges that odi has received 87 voq complaints and identifies 10 specific voq complaints related to the aeb system engaging with no obstruction in the path of the vehicle. The petition alleges that, based on Nissan's actions, the manufacturer is aware of the alleged issue due to issuing a technical service bulletin (TSB) and launching two ?"quality actions," and initiating a "customer service initiative" in relation to it. The petitioner alleges that Nissan's actions do not represent an adequate long-term solution to the problem. This defect petition has been opened to evaluate the issue and determine whether to grant or deny the petitioner's request. The population stated above includes all my 2017-2018 rogue production; however, odi's current understanding is the aeb system was not standard equipment on my 2017 vehicles. The complaints (voq reports) cited by the petitioner can be reviewed at NHTSA. Gov under the following reference (odi) numbers: 11187374, 11186903, 11185890, 11128704, 11123321, 11113479, 11099313, 11089960, 11073644, 10972343, and the petition itself is filed under odi 11191872.
