Investigations Summary: The office of defects investigation (odi) has received 17 complaints alleging a malfunction of the passenger sensing system (pss) for the front outboard passenger frontal airbag and knee airbag in model year (my) 2012-2013 Chevrolet volt vehicles. Complaints report illumination of the passenger airbag status indicator, the airbag readiness light, and the service airbag message display. Complaints allege the cause of the pss malfunction to be the system sensor located under the trim cover of the front passenger seat. A malfunctioning pss could result in the potential suppression of the passenger frontal and knee airbags if the front passenger seat is occupied by a person of adult size. Odi is opening this preliminary evaluation to characterize the scope and severity of the potential problem and to fully assess the potential safety-related issues.
