Defect Investigation of Front Lap Belt Malfunction

Investigation of Front Lap Belt Malfunction

Subject: Front lap belt malfunction
Components covered:
  • Seat belts
Investigations Summary: This investigation was opened on Dec. 10, 1999. It was closed on Mar. 16, 2000. Odi has received eleven vehicle owner's questionnaires (voq) reporting that the subject vehicles' lap belts bind up so that they either allow slack to develop in the webbing (preventing adequate occupant restraint), or prevent extension of the belt from the retractor for use. Field inspections and consumer complaints suggest that webbing twists tend to develop in the lap portions of the subject belts and are then ingested into the retractor assembly, leading to the reported malfunctions. At present, the known repair forthis condition is replacement of the belt/retractor assembly. One complaintant reports that her dealer has refused further service after performing two passenger side retractor replacements. Another complaint vehicle was repurchased under florida's lemon law after unsuccessful visits to 3 dealers to remedy lap belts that had jammed on five separate occasions. A preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the scope of this phenomenon.
